Suldarr'essalar 07-20-07, 02:22 AM	Hey. Just a thought. We're starting a new campaign tomorrow and we wanted to combine monk with the soulknife into one class. Would it be OK to give monk: - wild talent at 1st level - add speed of thoughts, up the walls, psionic charge to the list of bonus feats - add unarmed mind strike that works just as mindblades (including enhancement bonus and special abilities at given levels) except that it enhances monk's unarmed attacks (and it doesn't take time to "manifest a mindblade" since it's an unarmed strike). The monk would not gain: - slow fall - quivering palm - perhaps improved speed - ki strike - increased unarmed strike (it deals 1d6 + what it gets with mind strike) What do you think?

Tempest Stormwind 07-20-07, 04:09 PM	Something close is already present in Untapped Potential -- the xeph monk substitution levels allow you to create a ki blade, which is mechanically similar to a mind blade and can benefit from UTP's nice soulknife-only feats. Similarly, those feats you mentioned (or a subset of them, I'm AFB) are available as xeph monk bonus feats instead. (It's only on the xeph to reflect the favored class: soulknife thing.)
Suldarr'essalar 07-20-07, 05:38 PM	The problem with xephs is that they don't have enough background in most settings (the DM allows only dromits, and elans from new races from XPH (half-giants, 'zerai, duergars are OK)). I was thinking about halfling monk (with given changes) with substitution levels from IIRC RotW (skirmish instead of flurry) + speed of thioughts, up the walls, psionic charge + spring attack feat tree. We'll probably roll for ability scores, so it's just an idea.
Asurya 07-26-07, 10:52 AM	yes, Skirmish is in RoW, although it's a Halfling racial level replacament... - your mix should definitely drop improved speed as they have Speed of thought - KiStrike is useless as you gave him fists enhancement - I see MindStrike for improving unarmed damage & Quivering palm as a fair trade but you should also drop Stunning Fist for free while you are at it. - why do they loose slow fall though? (it's a niche ability, true, but dungeonscape give a neat replacement IIRC) 'cause they don't gain anything in return, does he?

Haven't seen dungeonscape, but they gain a free wild talent and expanded feat selection, so the should loose something. Ki strike is out (as written in the first post), and stunning attack is one of the binus feats. I added Speed of thoughts because it's a prerequirement for some other bonus feats. But it can be omited; bonus feats monks get work even if monks do not meet the prerequirements.
awaken_D_M_golem 07-26-07, 08:34 PM	Given the way Carnivore has done the new Psion and Monk combos, I'd suggest doing one of those but with two caveats: One - use Psy War instead of Psion Two - use the PsyWar's mindblade-ish class feature from Expanded Classes I. Or Use the Soulknife PrC in CPsi because it uses Wis as it's combat stat. Perhaps the feat Carnivore used, can be adapted to Soulknife ?! Have fun.
