| InkBlot06-22-07, 01:33 PM | I've been trying to write this power for a long time, and I think I've finally hit the mark. What do you guy's think? Tactile Telekinesis Psychokinesis [force] Level: Kineticist 1 Display: Visual Manifesting Time: 1 standard action Range: Touch Target: One creature or object at a time Duration: Concentration, up to 1 round/level Saving Throw: None Power Resistance: Yes A subtle telekinetic field extends from your touch, enveloping your target. Each round you can release your target, touch another one, or reestablish contact with a previous target. This power does not end if there is no valid target, only if the duration ends or your concentration ceases. While targeting an object, you can use your key ability (Int for Psions, Cha for Wilders, or Wis for Psychic Warriors) in place of your Strength to determine your lifting and carrying capacity. If you spend at least 5 rounds concentrating on an unattended object, you can attempt to break or burst it as if making a Strength check, except that you apply your key ability modifier to the check instead of your Strength modifier. While targeting a creature, you can perform one bull rush, disarm, grapple, or trip attempt each round. Resolve these attempts as normal, except that they don’t provoke attacks of opportunity, you use your manifester level in place of your base attack bonus (for disarm and grapple attempts), you use your Intelligence modifier in place of your Strength modifier or Dexterity modifier, and a failed attempt doesn’t allow a reactive attempt by the target (such as normally allowed on disarm or trip attempts). Augment: For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power grants a +1 bonus on Strength checks and on your checks involving bull rush, disarm, grapple, or trip attempts. Now to get back to working on subconscious telekinesis. |
| Kapitanturtle06-22-07, 05:28 PM | So, is this just a Kineticist-only version of Telekinetic Maneuver? Seems like a lot of stuff for a level one power. |
| axenome06-22-07, 08:24 PM | Superboy fan, eh? I always did like that power of his. |
| InkBlot06-22-07, 09:08 PM | I always thought it was an interesting take on super-strength. The first I heard of tactileTK was when I read a Project A-Ko fanfic, way back in the late 90's, that postulated A-Ko's actual power to be tactile telekinesis. And Mew-Two from Super Smash Bro's Melee uses what would best be described as tactile telekinesis, although he doesn't quite touch his target. I tried to write tactileTK so that when you get it it's only realy good for lifting heavy things for a round or two. By the time you can pump it up to be realy good the other TK powers come along and trivialize it. And I think I've finally managed to cobble together a decent version of subconcious telekinesis. SubconTK is meant to balance out the power difference between far hand (useless 1st level psion/wilder power) and unseen servant (awesome 1st level sorcerer/wizard spell). Subconscious Telekinesis Psychokinesis [force] Level: Kineticist 1 Manifesting Time: 1 standard action Display: Visual Range: 20 ft. Area: 20 ft. radius, centered on you. Duration: 1 hour/level (D) Saving Throw: None Power Resistance: Yes Power Points: 1 You subconsciously maintain telekinetic control within the area. You can perform minor tasks with a minimum of effort. You can lift up to 20 pounds of weight, move an object up to 20 feet each round, and use skills which require a check of DC 10 or less. Generally, you can manipulate things as if with two hands. You can subconsciously perform repetitive tasks (such as sweeping the floor or carrying a pile of books) without using any of your actions, but otherwise you must use a move action to direct this power. Due to the nature of the subconscious mind, you can not use this power to perform tasks which require concentration or an attack roll. |

However, seems like it could possibly be a wasted power slot in certain situations. Perhaps if you could augment it to preform more difficult tasks, or make it so that by making a successful concentration check you actually can do something fairly complex. However the flavor of it is absolutely wonderful, and even if you dub this version the finished one, I may apply it to a few of my psionic NPCs who have nothing better to do, simply for the flavorful aspect. It should probably be available to non-kinetisists too. Doesn't seem like a restricted power, and it would definately fit some cool archtypes like the wise seer in a grand library with books floating around him or her. Not worth Expanded Knowledge for non-kinetisists, I don't think. But if you couldn't tell, I'm about 80% for it, and think it's a good power, especially flavor-wise. If you could get it to be a little more useful in other situations, then it would be worth a power slot (notice how few sorcerers have unseen servant, but lots of wizards do). |
| InkBlot06-23-07, 11:59 AM | Unseen servant and subconscious telekinesis are both extremely versatile and powerful effects. You just need to be a little creative. For example, retrieving thrown weapons, blocking line of sight with a sheet, pulling a potion out of a friend's backpack, levitating compressed or reduced halflings, and securing grappling hooks. The power part comes from the fact that, due to the very long duration, you can do all these things with a single casting of unseen servant or a single manifestation of subconTK. SubconTK is, now that I look at it again, slightly less powerful than unseen servant. An unseen servant can give you a +2 bonus to any skill which can be used untrained, through the aid another action. Since you can't aid another yourself, you can't do the same with subconTK. Also, each additional casting of unseen servant creates an additional servant - allowing you to lift heavier weights, get higher aid another bonuses, and do more things at the same time. You can't do the same with subconTK, since it's actually you telekinesing things around rather than some force construct. Anyway, subconTK is on the kineticist list because it's better than far hand in every way. If you want to ditch far hand and replace it with subconTK, I think that would be fine too. I just didn't want people to think they have to do that in order to include this power in their games. I'm honored that you want to include this power in your NPCs. I believe I may be finished with the power now. I recently changed it to include a clause restricting the manifester from using it to attack. On tactile telekinesis: You can lift heavy things for a very brief time, or you can use your Int in place of Str to knock somebody down (if you're willing to get that close). Grease can trip and disarm just as well, doesn't require you to get into melee, doesn't require you to make attack rolls each round, and automatically renders the victim flat-footed if he doesn't have 5 ranks in Balance. So all that this does better is let you lift heavy things. It boosts your strength for a very narrow application. It's on a restricted list, so doing one useful thing plus half the useful things of another power seems to be about right. The discipline lists are supposed to be outright better than the psion/wilder list; psionic charm vs. telempathic projection; energy missle vs. energy push; levitate vs nomad levitate; et cetera. |
