Telepaths and mindaffecting [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-13-08, 04:13 AM Hey folks, got a question here that shouldn't be hard to answer. The group I play with are an evil bunch, and in fighting is rather common, such as if an item is dropped and two people want it, we don't bother with a quick roll, we duke it out.

Recently something came up that had me curious, my character is a Psion, a Telepath to be precise, now I was trying to beat up my mate and he said that because his character had an immunity to mind affecting, so powers like Mind Wipe had no effect, I see the logic behind this of course, but was his argument a point of rule or just a point of logic?

04-13-08, 04:34 AM If he is actually immune to mind-affecting effects, then any power with the [mind-affecting] descriptor will be completely useless against him; he can ignore them utterly. The same goes for spells with the [mind-affecting] descriptor.

04-13-08, 10:51 AM This is why powers like astral construct are so useful for a telepath to grab (in this case, likely via Expanded Knowledge). Sure he's immune to mind-affecting effects, but is he immune to a high-level construct that can grapple him even when he's flying, or blast him when he's incorporeal?

If you really want the item and your party (and DM) don't mind inter-party fighting for who comes out on top, just manifest a quickened astral construct, which then grapples the offending party member, and while he's busy, you grab the object in question and use it against him later. Or, you could say, "Well if I can't have it, no one can!" cackle maniacally, and time hop the item. It'll disappear, your 'friend' will be upset and likely stomp off, while you stand by the item and wait for it to reappear.

Just don't let your party know what you're doing (be a sneaky bastard :P).

Otherwise, you could always dominate a creature to make cool things for you. Artificers are your friends.

04-13-08, 12:04 PM Make sure his claim is legit. What level is your group? How did he get complete immunity? For PC races it is not all that easy, especially to have it up 24/7. If it is real, then when you use beneficial effects such as Mind Link don't forget to exclude him. When you are using Psychic Reformation on behalf of teammates he is off the list.
