| DM_Dracophile06-24-07, 11:53 PM | With all the changes to Astral Construct, the addition of new psionic critters, etc., I was wondering what the consensus is on the idea of a focused 'summoner'/creator type of psionicist. |
| Genetic06-25-07, 12:06 AM | Consensus: Ignore the change to the astral construct power! |
| Tempest Stormwind06-25-07, 12:22 AM | The FAQ at the top of the forum deals with this, actually, though not directly. This post (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=12789448&postcount=5) covers the ins and outs of the stupidity of the Astral Construct nerf and the new summoning powers. |
| AAB06-25-07, 12:32 AM | i never had any problem with the "one astral construct" thing, but that's probably because i was an ectoplasmic adept (or whatever that PrC is) and could do two (i think. i don't remember this character that much). most of the time i didn't even join in the fight myself, just had minions beating down enemies. i remember this character fondly (but NONE of the combats, really. kinda odd.). he was a dwarf shaper who made giant-sized dwarves to pummel stuff with their fists. it's really fun being a shaper; forming little tiny dwarves to carry your coins whenever you have to pay a toll makes losing cash a lot more fun :P |

Oh, wait, no one would ever take it. Well, let's nerf it's key ability but give it a once-per-day workaround! Yeah! Shoot me now. Did you see bruce's reasoning behind that change? I swear, not even the RIAA could be that stupid and hyppocritical. |
| AAB06-25-07, 02:10 AM | no, i didn't see the reasoning, since running more than one construct isn't difficult and there is no such prohibition on summoning. but i went with it anyways. oh well. didn't really cause any problems. |
| angellis_ater06-25-07, 10:05 AM | Did you see bruce's reasoning behind that change? I swear, not even the RIAA could be that stupid and hyppocritical. Don't be so sure about that now. |
| Tyroki06-25-07, 10:35 AM | What else can you summon, bar AC's? O.o |
| Tempest Stormwind06-25-07, 11:17 AM | What else can you summon, bar AC's? O.o In Complete Psionic: 1) Larval mind flayers, which come in packs of four (what happened to one "pet" at a time?) and you can summon them already grappling something 2) Particularly weak elementals (stewards), which somehow were also supposed to be better than psicrystals but definitely aren't 3) Incorporeal mind-sucking undead called Shadow Efts; if a spectral savant (same book, their cheap attempt at making a psionic lich) knows this power he has infinite power points ...You get the idea. |
| Sarlax06-25-07, 12:03 PM | Eberron supplements permit you to summon quori as well, which are super-intelligent dream monsters. |
| Fafnir06-25-07, 12:20 PM | Eberron supplements permit you to summon quori as well, which are super-intelligent dream monsters. And badass. Really badass. |
| Tyroki06-25-07, 01:37 PM | But how do you get the ability to summon said things like the Larval Flayers? >.> And I like my little Psicrystal HP sponge, containment centre xD |
| InkBlot06-25-07, 02:43 PM | But how do you get the ability to summon said things like the Larval Flayers? >.> It's just a power. Any psion or wilder can take it. I know, it doesn't make any sense. It's horrible. It has no flavor attached to it what-so-ever. But that's how it works. |
| Greatbear06-26-07, 12:15 AM | Malhavoc's Minscape: Beast of the Id has a power called "Call Beasts of the Id", which functions like a Summon Monster for psionic creatures. It shouldn't be too hard to take the framework of that power and put together a list of whatever monsters you want to summon and the power point cost to summon them. |

The power that only exists to show off the monsters from the book? Seriously. |
| Beefypistolsnipe06-26-07, 10:00 AM | heh, tempest I guess you are a staunch defender of XPH? Good because we need more of those :D ! I actually like astral construct as written (I don't own CPsi yet, and from people's criticisms it looks like that's one of the last ones I get). AC can be seen as more limited than summoning, but all the options available to it make it a very fun power to get creative with (no pun intended). Even though it's the only real "summoning" power in the XPH, I think it does a great job of fitting with the whole "psionics come from within, not from without" flavour of it all. |
| Greatbear06-26-07, 06:39 PM | The power that only exists to show off the monsters from the book? Seriously. :uh-huh: Gee, I try to be helpful and answer the original poster's question. This is why I don't :censored:ing post on the forums that often. |
| Lycanthromancer06-26-07, 07:46 PM | Ignore the nerf and check out the 3.5 Constructor (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040625b). It's not horrifically powerful, but it's the COOLEST PSIONIC CLASS EVER. I mean it. It's awesome. Now, if we could just get some more construct abilities... Say, who wants to write up some feats for some new menu abilities? Hmm? Hmm? TEMPEST! BACRIS! To the Dreamscarredmobile! [edit] Oh, and ignore Tempest's escapades in sarcasm. Some of us are just a little bit...bitter. |
| SlanderPanic06-27-07, 10:59 AM | Planar champion, also from Complete Psionic, is actually a half-decent summoning power. I should post my non-suck Ectopic Adept variant sometime soon, along with my non-suck version of the Ectopic Form feat. I think the board will be pleased. |
| Greatbear06-28-07, 12:36 AM | Please do. I'd love to see them. |
| Lokiyn06-28-07, 01:25 AM | I don't normally use the astral constructs but i love the Toys (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040827e) and Stuff (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php%3Ft%3D747757) |
| SlanderPanic06-28-07, 10:15 AM | Please do. I'd love to see them. Done. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=875521) Enjoy. |
