| snakeman83007-11-07, 09:32 AM | Here's today's Sage: Q: Dear Sage Can a creature augment its psi-like abilities? --Winston A: No. Since a creature doesn’t pay power points to manifest a psi-like ability, it can’t be augmented (even if the creature has power points). A psi-like ability always has the base, non-augmented effect. Pay particular attention to the last line. You know, the A psi-like ability always has the base, non-augmented effect. How many creatures in the XPH have psi-like abilities that are "augemtned for the creature's manifester level"? I think this is contradicting all of that. |
| Fafnir07-11-07, 09:45 AM | I think this is contradicting all of that. Yup. The Sage is again blatantly disregarding the rules. All creatures with psi-like abilities are assigned a manifester level, which indicates how difficult it is to dispel their psi-like effects and determines all level-dependent variables (such as range or duration) the abilities might have. When a creature uses a psi-like ability, the power is manifested as if the creature had spent a number of power points equal to its manifester level, which may augment the power to improve its damage or save DC. However, the creature does not actually spend power points for its psi-like abilities, even if it has a power point reserve due to racial abilities, class levels, or some other psionic ability. |
| Bacris07-11-07, 09:53 AM | Where do we submit corrections for the Sage? Think I'm going to contact CustServ on this one :P |
| Ovistavin07-11-07, 10:19 AM | Where do we submit corrections for the Sage? Think I'm going to contact CustServ on this one :P I don't know, but I just submitted an email though the Ask Wizards email page saying that today answer is incorrect. If we are lucky maybe someone will see it today. I think sending one to CustServ as well is a good idea. |
| Bacris07-11-07, 10:23 AM | Well, I sent in a correction via Ask Wizards and to CustServ, so hopefully we can get it corrected. |
| Tealgorthian07-11-07, 10:36 AM | Is the Sage playing the same game as us? Or did he just get done with an all night session of something else, and get confused? |
| DMaple07-11-07, 10:59 AM | Must have been a really long all night session as he got yesterday's wrong as well. |
| SlanderPanic07-11-07, 12:42 PM | I think this about sums it up. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=WrjwaqZfjIY) |
| Salla07-11-07, 12:46 PM | Yeah, he fumbled that one. On the other hand, it amazes me that someone actually asked that question because it IS so clearly delineated in the rules. What's next, "If I have an 18 STR, do I have a +4 strength modifier?" |
| munin07-11-07, 01:19 PM | ...it amazes me that someone actually asked that question because it IS so clearly delineated in the rules... Psi-like abilities are defined in at least two places, and the definition under Psionic Powers doesn't say they can be augmented, so it's easy to imagine someone seeing that one and asking the question, not knowing there's another definition somewhere else. But it's easy to pull up via the www.d20srd.org google search. |
| Ovistavin07-11-07, 01:23 PM | I just looked and the answer has been corrected. |
| Salla07-11-07, 01:28 PM | I just looked and the answer has been corrected. Not the optimal solution, but I'll take it. Hmm. Must be some weird issue with my compooter ... still has the old answer for me. Ah well. :) |
| Tempest Stormwind07-11-07, 01:29 PM | I just looked and the answer has been corrected. I'd like to know how we reached him on this; he's still wrong on the other day's psionic focus statement. Don't get me wrong, I love the psi-exposure (as of this writing, two half of the articles and the Sage Advice are about psionics!), but the mistakes in the rules bug me. They'd bug me even if they were about divine magic (which I despise). The Sage is supposed to be authoritative. This is amateurish. |
| AdventChild07-11-07, 01:35 PM | Is the Sage playing the same game as us? Or did he just get done with an all night session of something else, and get confused? I think he is playing that new system d30 ( or was it d40) that was used in april's fool some while ago... |
| Nephlite07-11-07, 01:59 PM | I just looked and the answer has been corrected. I just looked: Q: Dear Sage Can a creature augment its psi-like abilities? --Winston A: No. Since a creature doesn’t pay power points to manifest a psi-like ability, it can’t be augmented (even if the creature has power points). A psi-like ability always has the base, non-augmented effect. The answers has been uncorrected as well. |
| Bacris07-11-07, 02:05 PM | You have a cached page :) new version: "Q: Dear Sage Can a creature augment its psi-like abilities? --Winston A: Not exactly. Since a creature doesn’t pay power points to manifest a psi-like ability, it can’t spend extra power points to augment it (even if the creature has a power point reserve). However, when a creature manifests a psi-like ability, "the power is manifested as if the creature had spent a number of power points equal to its manifester level, which may augment the power (Expanded Psionics Handbook 184). " |
| snakeman83007-11-07, 03:13 PM | Cool. We got it changed. Now this thread can be lost into the archives. |
