Thought Protection [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-22-07, 03:36 AM Im not sure if Ishould be posting this here ot the equipment and combat forum, but the item I'm looking for is Psionic in nature. Basically I'm looking for an item that will protect a character from having their thoughts read.

I was thinking a Medalion of Thoughts or Helm of Telepathy but they just allow the wearer to read thoughts not protect their own. Can you guys suggest anything?

This (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/rings.htm#mindShielding) would also work, depending on how strict your GM is on the transparency rules. The ring doesn't explicitly state that it will protect from read thoughts but as that is the closest psionic power to detect thoughts your GM may allow it to work.

Also, the items you mentioned aren't psionic. Do you mean to stop spells, powers, or both from reading your mind? If it's merely spells then the ring will work except for the more powerful ones.

07-22-07, 07:51 AM Yeah, I realised that, I flicked hrough the XPH but didn't find anything I may have to take a closer look. Essentially I'd like it to stop both but I'd need it to stop powers first and foremost.

if something protects against magic effects that read your mind, it protects against psionic effects that read your mind. (of course, if something just protects you from a specific spell or power, that changes things...)

That's not exactly true. There are certain effects that explicitly affect powers but not spells-- mostly general feats from the Expanded Psionics Handbook. I'm not aware of any that specifically block mind-affecting effects, though.

Those also state that they are the exception from the normal transparency rule.

The problem, Jolanthus, is that unless you protect yourself from all ways to read your mind (like that first item I posted) it quite simply isn't going to work. There are just too many different powers and spells that have this effect to get items to protect from each one.

Do you need it for an NPC as a DM to protect from inquisitive players, or do you want one for your own character (if so, what is he?) Consider Mind Blank (power or spell). If it's an NPC, he could have an ally cast in on him every day. If it's for you, consider the Leadership feat and a cohort perhaps? Or take the Slayer PrC.

There are certain effects that explicitly affect powers but not spells-- mostly general feats from the Expanded Psionics Handbook.
