If you expect people to take time to answer your post, you should at least have the common decency to make it coherent and presentable. The fact that this is the internet is no excuse to act like a fool. This aint 4chan, The Count |
| Tempest Stormwind04-02-07, 08:46 PM | The short answer: No. The slightly-longer answer: Are you willing to spend about twice as much time preparing for each game than you normally do for the "benefit" of doing a bit of extra math for flavor (when math tastes like cardboard) and the drawback of having to answer inane questions (for instance, if psionics doesn't affect magic, why do arcane spells affect the handiwork of the gods, and vice versa?)? Generally, I'd say no. But if you're a masochistic workaholic, don't let me stop you. |

| Tempest Stormwind04-02-07, 09:28 PM | Psionics are not superior. Check the stickies at the top of the forum. Furthermore, this is not AOL or 4chan. People honestly take you more seriously if you post in proper English. And learn to use the multiquote function, for that matter (see that + next to the Quote button? Click those on all the posts you want to reply to, in order, and then click Post Reply. It's okay to type between the QUOTE tags, too.) |
| AntiDjinn04-02-07, 09:32 PM | If you want non-transparency between psionics and magic, are you also planning to introduce non-transparency between arcane, divine, incarnum, shadow magic, binding, and truenaming? Why should dispel magic work across so many lines, yet psionics alone is immune? I don't have a problem with using psionics as different (if a given DM is willing to do all the work) but feel you should take the next logical step and have arcane and divine also be separate realms of power with complex rules for overlap. |

No, because they are all magic. Psionics are psionics. |
| Benaiah04-03-07, 03:47 AM | No, because they are all magic. Psionics are psionics. Ah, but what is the fundamental difference? The fact that the word magic is tagged on after arcane and divine? Could you not then place the magic tag onto psionics, having not only psionic magic, but psionic magic that is vastly seperate from it's arcane and divine brethren? The precedent exists in the XPH, all you have to do is add one. Little. Word. MAGIC! Gah, I hate magic being used as sacred text. We can't do this, because it wouldn't be magic. We have to make this thing this way, because it's magic. Is the very point and inspiration for magic in D&D bending the reality of the world as we know it on a near-infinite scope? Why then, must we conform this limitless possibility of our imagination to taboos and drawn out rules? And why, I ask, can't psionics get a piece of the pie?! I apologize. It's early here. In response to the OP, the XPH does have a section with guidelines for making psionics different than magic, with options for diminished or no effect, but I've never really had the...energy? Care? I struggle finding the words, but I haven't used them. Most games I've run have used transparency, but there's a system in place to make the different forms of magic distinct. Power points already made psionics distinct for my current game, and modifying one of divisions of arcane/divine makes the easiest way to provide a flavorful, meaningful balance between the types of "magic". Speaking of which, I still need to work on that casting system...ah hell, it's always something... |
| tetebetson04-03-07, 06:48 AM | No, because they are all magic. Psionics are psionics. to true |
| hiryuu04-03-07, 07:19 AM | You're still beating up physics and taking her wallet (it's okay, she kinda likes it, otherwise she wouldn't let you do it), which makes it still another form of magic. Arcane: Using a stick to beat what you want out of physics. Divine: Asking nicely for someone else to do it for you. Psionics: Getting in there with your fisticuffs. |

| Bacris04-03-07, 12:59 PM | A +10 / -10 to what, exactly? Dude, I'm not usually one to harp on someone else's posting style, but your messages make about as much sense as when my cat jumps on the keyboard. Tempest knows what that looks like ;) Please write your ideas in a meaningful, intelligent manner where the words are actually the correct words if you expect to have an intelligent discussion. Injecting smilies in the middle of a word, not using any grammar at all, and seemingly intentional misspellings make your posts pretty much unintelligible. |

Im sorry but I am usualy quite stoned What I mean is . Spell resistance -10 vs Psionics/Powers/Psi-like abilities &Power Resistance-10 vs Magic/Spells/Spell-like abilities To be fair you should all be able to understand what I mean using that intelligable intelligance of yours |
| AntiDjinn04-04-07, 12:27 AM | No, because they are all magic. Psionics are psionics. So why don't wizards research and cast healing spells? Why don't druids learn shadow spells? If it is all the same exact thing why bother with separate classes? Why should a sorcerer be able to identify a Heal spell on sight (it isn't on his list, he has no clue how clerics actually get their spells)? Why should all magic just be one homogenous mess and psionics (no less nonsensical and fantastic -- if you think it is science then you don't understand the term) not be subject to the same rules? |

Why should all magic just be one homogenous mess and psionics (no less nonsensical and fantastic -- if you think it is science then you don't understand the term) not be subject to the same rules? Wizards can research healing spells. The fact that none have appeared in their lists is a huge gaping hole in the logic of D&D. That and the fact that some folks can't leave behind a sacred cow, which I have zero qualms with leaving behind. Druids learning shadow spells? I'm sure if I were so inclined, I could make one that does. Again, someone else's game flavor stops this as it kills a sacred cow. Why bother with separate classes? Because they might each have that little bit of variance that you like. Seriously, if you're that caught up with making psionics magic, then your own argument goes against you. Why bother with psionics at all if its just magic? I happen to think that it has an entirely different feel than magic, and is better served by having it not be governed exactly the same as magic, whereas all sources of magic are related. Why do I do it? Because I, and my players, like it like that. This is all that matters. I don'[t have any more problems doing it this way than I would when adjucating any other new material (splatbooks, etc) into my campaign. Its not my fault if others have a harder time doing so. |
