Useless augments for higher save DCs? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-29-07, 12:46 PM Can a psionic character, using a power with a save DC that increases when augmented, add the power points for an augment but not use its effect?

For example, in the case of psionic dominate (a 4th-level power costing 7 pp), adding an additional 4 pp allows the power to effect outsiders, elementals, dragons, and so on. Could a psion target a humanoid with the spell, but add the augment, in order to artifically inflate the save DC of the power?

Also, continuing with dominate, is it possible to spend extra pp beyond what is needed for any augment, solely to increase the save DC? Because if not, then the DC for that power caps at 16 + Int modifier (with the outsider, elemental, etc. augment), which would make it very hard to affect high-CR targets.

06-29-07, 12:53 PM If you augment dominate, you add those extra creatures to the ones you can already affect.

A 11pp dominate can affect humanoids plus outsiders, elementals, dragons, and so on.

06-29-07, 01:07 PM Dominate has enough augments to allow any kind of expenditure that you want.

1. If you spend 2 additional power points, this power can also affect an animal, fey, giant, magical beast, or monstrous humanoid.
2. If you spend 4 additional power points, this power can also affect an aberration, dragon, elemental, or outsider in addition to the creature types mentioned above.
3. For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power can affect an additional target. Any additional target cannot be more than 15 feet from another target of the power.
4. If you spend 1 additional power point, this power’s duration is 1 hour rather than concentration. If you spend 2 additional power points, this power’s duration is 1 day rather than concentration. If you spend 4 additional power points, this power’s duration is 1 day per manifester level rather than concentration.

In addition, for every 2 additional power points you spend to achieve any of these effects, this power’s save DC increases by 1.

I could spend 12 extra points just to allow the power to affect extra targets. That's DC 20+INT right there.

That being said, you cannot gain a DC increase by spending power points while in a fashion that does not augment the power. The includes saying "I pick the number 1. augment twice", because that augment can only be paid for once. It's a good question, though.

06-29-07, 03:43 PM Meh. I say that you should be able to spend power points simply to augment the DC. This should've been tossed into the original printing of the XPH. Too bad it wasn't, though...
