Hi,

So my understanding of he psion class is not so good but i plan to create one for a drow campaign.

I would made it an egoist one by playing a lot with polymorph self and after with metamorphosis and in the same time playing also a lot with my psicrystal (psicrystal affinity as a feat). For my role in fight, i think that i will fight with polymorph self and metamorphosis and if necessary, stop that and be able to control the fighting area.

I only have access to the basic rules (PHB, Complete psionic) and may by research have access to the others official rulebookx (as XPH).

My stats must be chosen between :

- 11, 9, 12, 7, 14, 18
or
- 12, 7, 16, 8, 16, 13

my character start at level 9 so if you could help me to made it as efficient as possible...

THX a lot

Cedric

PS : sorry if my english is not so good but i'm a french speaking one so ...

I'm reading this one but the quantity of data and the unknow from where came all the power and feat make me unable to determine what i can use in my case so if i could have a more focused answer it will be great.

Thx

The Expanded Psionics Handbook actually has the base rules for psionics. (It's a bit of a misnomer.) Most of the information can also be found in the SRD (http://www.d20srd.com). Complete Psionic is an expansion. It is unnecessary, and many believe it is better to forget that it exists. Most of the official psionics material comes from those two books or the Eberron campaign setting. Hyperconscious and Untapped Potential are two very popular third-party psionics supplements.

If you are playing a Psion, note that Metamorphosis is the only shapeshifting power available. Using Metamorphosis with a Psicrystal can be fun, because you can share the effects of the power with the Psicrystal, and the Psicrystal, being a Construct, has access to Construct forms.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about playing a Shaper. The only psionic character I've ever played was a Nomad.

Starting out as a higher level (9th, in your case) isn't a very good way to learn the system with a new character. Plus, you miss all the really fun levels ;) I'd say wait on the Psion until you want to start at level 1, and go from there so you get more of a feel for it by starting simple and working you way up into the more complex areas of Psionics.

Start simple and work your way up as a general rule. Remember, the best way to lean is to do.

Wait a minute...

How are you using Complete Psionic, but not using the Expanded Psionic Handbook, but playing a psion using metamorphosis and polymorph?

Polymorph is a spell, not a power, and the Psion class is in the Expanded Psionics Handbook, not in Complete Psionic...

oki sorry for that.

I'm using PHB and the Psionic handbook (not the expanded one yet without research allowed by the DM), all in the 3rd edition

I'm also starting at 9th lvl because my so love bard just die ... so i have to replace her.

Thx

You realize that the Expanded Psionics Handbook is a COMPLETE rewrite of the psionics system and is not compatible with the Psionics Handbook, right?

If you're playing in a 3.0 game and the DM insists on using the Psionics Handbook, I'd honestly say play something else...

If you're playing in a 3.5 game, I'd let the DM know that the Expanded Psionics Handbook is the 3.5 version of psionics, while the Psionics Handbook is the 3.0 version of psionics and very, very unbalanced.

no i have not understand that the expanded psionic handbook wasn't compatible with the psionic handbook.

So in a 3.0 DD game, the basic rules for psionic that are in the XPH can't be used ?

i'm sorry if my questions seems stupid but the reading of the two handbook is not so easy for me...

The best thing for me is that you told me in a 3.0 dd game, which rules can be used to play a psionic.

A real big thx

This place will help you out.:)no, he's playing 3.0...

if he's using the 3.0 PsiHB, i'm not sure there's much anyone can do to help him... short of getting rid of the PsiHB and replacing it with 3.5 material. the PsiHB is simply beyond help...

Incidentally, the Expanded Psionics Handbook works *just fine* with the 3.0 PHB. There's a few things that might need changing -- just look for their equivalent in the PHB and make the appropriate changes.

For instance, Animal Affinity (the power version of Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace... etc) lasts 1 minute per level, in line with the 3.5 versions of its spells. In 3.0, those spells lasted an hour per level. You might need to change Animal Affinity accordingly.

Similarly, all the DC-increasing feats went up by +2, and all the SR-piercing feats went +4/+8 (all the time, not just on expenditure of focus like in the XPH). You might want to change these feats accordingly.

However, by and large, since it's a standalone system it works with 3.0 quite well.
