Stop thinking that base 5 / prc1 10 / prc2 5 is a standard build skeleton. Because every psionic PrC (except two, one of which carries severe drawbacks and the other is broken for other reasons) loses at least one ML, psionics says that the most powerful psion... will be a psion. This is already a challenge to magic, where the most powerful wizard... has 3 levels in Wizard, or maybe even 5 if he isn't specialized. If you're challenging that, why not challenge the PrC structure as well? The mechanical reason I see it is that barring the (non-required) Overchannel, a psion entering Constructor vs a pure psion would notice an immediate difference -- the psion could hit 4th level constructs, while the constructor's still stuck with 3rd (but has diverse options on those 3rd level constructs). You wouldn't notice the difference as readily without it.
InkBlot 08-09-07, 02:09 AM	Was it Mark who wrote that one? The Sangehirn requires the same number of ranks for the Heal skill. Personally, I don't mind it so much. On the one hand, tomorrow my group is starting a 5th level Eberron game, and it's annoying that my egoist won't be able to get into Sangehirn next level. On the other hand, I like being able to spend my character's feats a little more freely. If I were furiously trying to cram Sangehirn into the build as early as possible, I might have passed over getting Expanded Knowledge (Psionic Repair Damage). PSD can heal the warforged in the party an amazing 26 hp (average) for only 3 pp. Compared to touch of health, that's crazy.

Bear Warrior requires a +7 BAB, Cavalier requires something like +8, and several other PrCs are set up in a similar vein. Just because most can be met by 5th level doesn't mean they all do. I have a tendency to try for a 4th level minimum in many of the PrCs I design, but my campaign aims for a lower overall level, so my PrCs are typically 5 levels long, too. If you meet someone over 10th level, they're likely having songs sung about them by bards a few countries away...

Just look at the DMG. Most there require 6 or 7 levels to enter.
TheKeyofE 08-10-07, 11:34 PM	Just look at Tome of Battle. Two of the PrCs there require 10 BAB, and several of the others require character level 6 or 7 before you can enter.
runestar 08-10-07, 11:46 PM	I don't mind, since I usually take the 6th lv of the base class (even if I could prc out after 5th lv) for the +1bab and +1 to all saves anyways.:)
