| Rhyvurg10-21-07, 09:13 PM | I am about to make a new character for a 10th level game. The party is a troubleshooting group for a very militant religious organization. The party: Crusader Cleric/Dreadmaster Warblade Monk Paladin Warlok Psion(shaper) Rouge/Assassin Here's where this becomes a question for the Psionics board. I am considering playing a Samurai 2/Soulknife 5/Kensai 3. The question is, would you allow the mindblade to used as the kensai's signature weapon? And, would this make the soulknife worth taking? |

You're a SOULKNIFE. And a SAMURAI. You're above the low-level point. At this point you could probably be given the Death Star laser and it wouldn't be unbalancing. I'd allow it, and I'd say it would NOT make the classic soulknife worth using. |
| kyeudo10-21-07, 09:56 PM | Tempest stikes again! Your sarcastic wit always makes me laugh. |
| Rhyvurg10-21-07, 10:22 PM | Actually, I picked Samurai to get the Ride and Diplomacy skill points needed for the Kensai prerequisits. I know Paladin has the same skills, but Samurai gives me EWP: Bastard Sword without having to burn a feat, for when I use the mind blade as a bastard sword. Plus, Kensai was inspired by Eastern mythology and history. Thus, Samurai was thematically appropriate. |

| Bacris10-21-07, 11:04 PM | Jebus, 9-man party? I'd allow that class combo, although I'd probably prefer you use one of the variant soulknife options, rather than the core soulknife. |
| Salla10-21-07, 11:17 PM | I wouldn't allow you to take it for the same reason I don't let Swashbucklers take more than 3 levels. It's bad. |
| CrimsonDeath10-22-07, 02:05 AM | I don't let Swashbucklers take more than 3 levels. Not even Daring Outlaws? |
| zeratulcraft10-22-07, 02:23 AM | They still only have 3 levels of Swashy. |
| CrimsonDeath10-22-07, 02:45 AM | I thought the typical Daring Outlaw build had three levels of Rogue (or four of Swashbuckler). |

Plus, Kensai was inspired by Eastern mythology and history. Thus, Samurai was thematically appropriate. Thematically appropriate though it may be, Soulknife and Samurai are considered two of the worst classes around by the boards in general. Furthermore, Soulknife is a class that heavily penalises multiclassing. Kensai makes it workable, but frankly Samurai and Soulknife as a lead-in is nothing on either pure Paladin or Fighter 2/Bard 4, and that's saying something. Druid 6 provides a nice path into the class, being the only core class with all three class skills. Still, more Druid is better than Kensai. Similarly, Warblade 5 can get you into Kensai, and is as thematically appropriate or more than Samurai. |
| zeratulcraft10-22-07, 08:02 AM | I thought the typical Daring Outlaw build had three levels of Rogue (or four of Swashbuckler). You can get in with 2 of Swashy, since it only requires Grace 1 and 2d6 sneak. |
| Tempest Stormwind10-22-07, 10:00 AM | You can get in with 2 of Swashy, since it only requires Grace 1 and 2d6 sneak. The difference is 10d6 sneak attack with +19 base attack is better than 10d6 sneak attack with +15 base attack. Does that balance the loss of rogue class features and skills? ...Probably not. But it's competitive enough to open a huge range of effects on the CO boards. |
| Salla10-22-07, 01:01 PM | Not even Daring Outlaws? I always forget about that one. In general, though, I think it's better to have the skills and rogue abilities than the weak Swashbuckler abilities. I just remember having one player who was going to go Swashbuckler 20 ... *shudder* |
| Legdiwena10-22-07, 03:27 PM | Got a link for the variant soulknives? |
| CrimsonDeath10-22-07, 04:06 PM | I just remember having one player who was going to go Swashbuckler 20 ... *shudder* I think the CO board did manage to produce a decent Swashbuckler 20 build. And about three decent Fighter 20 builds, in case that comparison means anything to you. |
