| Lycanthromancer07-07-07, 05:48 PM | I've been reading Magic of Incarnum for the first time, and I have to say that I'm intrigued with the idea behind it, but not too thrilled at the soulmelds and feats...at all. I can see it being a really nifty system, but it needs some work. In any case, I was considering altering the soulcaster PrC slightly to become a psionic/meldshaper crossbreed (which wouldn't take much), losing only one manifester level and using feats to take up the slack. But there's so much overlap in soulmelds, and the effects are so underwhelming that I was wondering if I should even bother. I mean, it seems like it could be a really FUN system, but I'm just not seeing how it would play out. Does anybody have any experience messing with the system? Are there any nifty combos that would work well with a psion/incarnate (or totemist)/soulcaster that I'm just not seeing? Thus far, I was wanting an infiltration-specialist (not necessarily a sneaky type - I could Bluff or charm my way in, teleport, use astral construct for distractions, etc), with the change shape special quality of a changeling for some added fun. We're starting at 5th level, with the following stat-array: 18, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10. I'm obviously going to put an 18 into Int (and another into Con, if I go meldshaper). Other than that...I'm not sure what I want to do yet. So, any suggestions, my psionic friends? |
| Istarion07-07-07, 06:33 PM | Check the Psionics of Incarnum article from the Minds Eye... They have the Soul Manifester (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20060217a)PrC in it and some soulmelds. I've used it, and it's quite nice. the Charming veil works nicely with telepaths... |
| Lycanthromancer07-09-07, 04:03 PM | Meh. I've decided to go full shaper, focusing on telepathy powers. I used Illithid Heritage and Illithid Legacy (going for Greater Illithid Legacy and Illithid Compulsion later) from CPsi. I feel so dirty. But on the bright side, he's a changeling, and I've reflavored it to Doppelganger Heritage. |

| NoldorForce07-09-07, 05:17 PM | It is like the Curse of Xyphon! It burns! At least you should be able to use Psionic Glibness if you have Secrets of Sarlona. |

I wasn't overly impressed by it the first time I read it, but then I sat down and did some maths. It really is a great dip system. Depending on what you want to do with it. Remember, the Essentia investment limits run off character levels not class levels. So maybe a feat or two in bonus essentia and the systems usable right up to L20. Because you can change your melds daily, it's not a problem if you pick the wrong ones when you first get the class. I've got a Soulknife / Incarnate getting ready to take levels in Illumine Soul (only L5 atm :( ). Incarnate avatar negates & even bolsters my attack bonus, I can make my mindblade a force weapon and plan on using bound lightening gauntlets later on. Another example is Totemists get blink shirt, which is always good if you get locked in a cell (leave the bindings behind :)). Theft gloves for the rogue, lightening gauntlets for the fighter, any number of totemist melds for the monk. Just a shame there isn't a telekinesis meld :/ Oh, and if you ever want dodge, take midnight Dodge, come L 15, pick up bonus essentia and you can give yourself a +3 Dodge bonus :). The other fighter variant feats can be used to increase their "mundane" counterparts - which is never a bad thing. I have a rogue that I've just revised (new to the game, so I'm given some leeway on that), 1st level rogue, 2 levels totemist, 2 levels incarnate. Took me a bit, but I have ~11-13 base (excluding essentia) on open lock, disable device, search, listen (IIRC), spot, hide, move silent, and the ability to totally ignore doors (Blink shirt - I love it :)). With a bit of notice, I can switch the search meld out in favour of (min) +4 to UMD & spell craft. (I took able learner, so I have a lot of skills I can get to 8 ranks) I could have just as easily gone the social rogue path too. I want to try a gestalt / multi-classes monk/Incarnate with VoP sometime too :D |
