Hey,

I recently picked up the Eberron campaign setting, and I would really like to get the XPH as magic is becoming somewhat stale and I really like the flavor of psionics. I was browsing amazon and discovered that there are no 'new' copies of this book. Instead, I found a list of people selling it used. I have no qualms about buying used books, but the cheapest one was $60, and that isnt even including tax+shipping  . Is there somewhere else I can get this book without paying double the price? New, used, doesn't matter as long as all the pages are there. Thanks in advance.

Borders ,and barnes and Nobles(if you have em where you live) have a ton of copies when I go. any hobby store should have em. Also if you get the chance, pick up complete psionics, not that great of a book but has some fairly decent powers.

The Expanded Psionics Handbook is worth the price.

Anyway, most of the rules are in the System Reference Document (SRD) made available for free by Wizards to help newbie game designers. Just pick your flavor, Sage (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionic.html) or Hyper (http://www.d20srd.org/).

edit: Don't pick up Complete Psionics! Don't do it unless you are absolutely bonkers for psionics, AND until you already have Races Of Eberron, Magic Of Eberron, Untapped Potential, and you printed out all of The Mind's Eye (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/psi) articles.

Complete Psionics is a really really bad book. It has it's redeeming features, but it's not worth half it's MSRP.

*Most* of XPH is in the SRD. Just use the SRD until you find a cheap copy off the shelf.

Found a copy at a Barnes and Noble in Chicago. Not sure how close it is to you, but it's the best I could do.

B&N.com Store Locator for one that has it in stock. (http://storelocator.barnesandnoble.com/storedetail.do;jsessionid=8FE4153DC70723 2014EC492110A3BE9F?store=2304)

This one has one too. (http://storelocator.barnesandnoble.com/storedetail.do;jsessionid=06CD58DC12F65E 835275C29E9B5CDD64?store=2032)

If you're planning on playing with just the SRD, until you get your own XPH, then you should also check out the Psionics FAQ (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=638776) and the New Player's Guide To Psionics. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=486266) The SRD isn't as easy to read as the book, so a lot of people miss important rules when reading it.

The Golden Rules of psionics are:
1. You can't spend more power points than your manifester level. E.G., a 10th level psion can only spend 10 power points.

2. You can only expend your psionic focus on one thing at a time. E.G., it's impossible to use the feats Psionic Weapon and Deep Impact at the same time because they both require you to expend psionic focus.

Odd. I bought my XPH off Amazon just a month ago for $15. You've just got bad luck, I guess.

The XPH is out of print?!

Oh, and try:

There are still a few copies going fore a fair price.

Are you planning to switch over to 4.0, or will you stick with 3.5? If you choose 3.5, just use the SRD for now (download it ASAP!), and wait a few months until 4.0 is out for a short while. Right now the 3.0 psionic handbook is going for $3.00 on half.com's and amazon.com's used books, so if this is any sign of what is to be with the 3.5 version you could get it much cheaper later.

Thanks for all the help everyone! To respond to the 4.0 question: HELL NO. No way i'm going to pay for another $600 set of books for the same game, sorry wizards, you've taken enough of my money from 3.0 and 3.5, I wont be suckered into buying a whole new set of books because of the addition of another .5 :hoppingma . Maybe when 6.0 comes out  . In any case, back on topic, nobodez_here, thanks for pointing that out to me.. I should have thought of that. Also, is complete psionic really THAT bad? I seem to get mixed reviews.. people either love it or hate it. What's seems to be so wrong with it? Thanks again everyone.

There are good things and bad things in Complete Psionic.

The Ardent is good. It's a base class that has as many pp as a psion, but knows fewer powers and is limited in it's selection by his "philosophy", (essentially a bunch of small power lists, of which he selects a few to be available). On the plus side he gets a medium BAB and better HD. Depending on what you want to accomplish, he can be a much more robust than the psion.

Divine Mind: Stinks. it doesn't make much sense thematically (Psionics is always presented as being rather god independent), and is horrible mechanically with no real strengths.

Lurk: Excellent and fun class. Sort of a Psychic Warrior built for sneaking instead of front line combat.

The prestige classes are a bit weak, with nothing really exciting IMHO. But then, I rarely play prestige classes anyway. The main classes are such fun! One of the classes is a guy with storm powers. Er... how is this psionic?

Some of the feats are good, but many are a bit redundant and feel like they were just adding them to fill up space. For instance, there's about five different feats that let soulknives form their blade into different exotic weapons. This could have been done with one feat: "exotic Mind Blade, (Pick one weapon)". Some of the feats are so badly edited as to be entirely useless. Most famously, the "Illithid blast" feat says you can spend PP to make a mental blast, but never tells you how many pp to spend! And then there's the "Elemental Envoy" which replaces your psicrystal with a little elemental... how is that psionic?

The powers are a mixed bag. Some of them are good and flavorful (like the one that makes your enemies head explode, literally!), but a lot of them feel a bit off (what's with all the Stygian stuff? Psychic vampires would have been cool as a class option, but as powers they feel misplaced). The huge complaint here is nerfing some of the already established powers, such as limiting Astral Construct to one at a time. Essentially, it's errata that they make us pay for rather than posting it for free online. Even when it's good errata, that's annoying, but some of the depowerings just feel mean.

Then there's a new race (Synads, which are really cool, with threefold minds that let them take extra mental actions and resist mental control), some monster classes for (some of) the LA races in the XPH (Nice, nicer than the sort offered in Savage Species, but nothing that I couldn't have done myself, and why not all of them?) some psionic human variants (seriously feel like space filling). And, finally, there's the Erudite, a variant psion who can learn every power, but only use a few a day. Good, but what's it doing in the back of the book instead of up with the other classes?

Ultimately, a mixed bag. For me, it's worth it for the Ardent, the Lurk, the Synad and the Erudite, plus a few of the feats and powers. But the book is badly edited, poorly thought out, and doesn't add nearly enough for the established classes and races.

But, let's face it, the real source of hate here is that in all of 3.0/3.5 history, psionics got ONE support book and it was... disappointing. If we had gotten a few more decent books, I doubt CP would get a tenth of the hatrid it does. We didn't. We got one book and it's very subpar.

At least it disgusted some people enough to found Dreamscarred Press, which makes much fun PDFs. : - )

Sometimes Amazon has used books for a cheaper price, but the book is not worth the price you would have to pay for a new one. As long as no pages are ripped out it will serve its purpose.

Thanks for the review, I think i'll wait on complete psionic then. Thanks for the help!

It was a pretty comprehensive review, but he forgot to mention the Soulbow and Illumine Soul prestige classes. Complete Psionic is actually good if you just want it to pimp out your Soulknife. The Soulknife is the only XPH class that gets decent support in ComPsi.

The Soulbow turns a Soulknife's mind-blade into mind-arrows. They do damage as if fired from a composite longbow, but you add your wisdom bonus to the damage, they only take one hand to fire, and they have the same enhancement bonus as your mindblade. However, mind-arrows have a separate set of weapon abilities (e.g., distance, keen, or flaming) that aren't shared with your mind-blade.

The Soulknife class itself has the same bones BAB, hit die, skills, and saves as the Soulknife, but also gives you sweet bonus feats from a pretty big list. The bonus feat list contains every archery related feat from the PHB, plus a few from Complete Warrior. Even Zen Archery is on the list, allowing you to use Wis for both attack and damage rolls.

The only big gaff is that the Soulbow class doesn't state whether mind-arrows are one-handed or light weapons for TWF. I usually rule them as one-handed, due to the amount of damage they put out, and the fact that you can still use your mind-blade (a light weapon by default) in your off-hand anyway.

The Illumine Soul is an undead-hunting Soulknife prestige class. It enables a Soulknife to channel positive energy as well. IIRC, the bones of the class are identical to the Soulknife. However, an Illumine Soul's mindblade gets free abilities such as Undead Bane and Disruption. They can also shoot rays of positive energy, gain a little self-healing, a resistance to the special attacks of undead, and the ability to create a small explosion of positive energy centered on himself. It's a little off-flavor for psionics, but not nearly so much as the Divine Mind (although the Illumine Soul channels positive energy, he has no innate connection to a deity). The Illumine Soul is a solid prestige class that advances mind-blade progression, while granting some neat new class features, and addressing the Soulknife's weakness against undead.

Well, i'm beginning to believe that the XPH is, in fact, out of print. Atleast here in Illinois. I searched Barnes and Noble's store locator to see if the book would turn up. Two locations listed the book as in-stock, but upon calling to confirm it turns out that both locations actually don't have it :( . I guess i'll have to run my eberron games without psionics.. which, ironically, is the whole reason I bought the setting in the first place :headexplo . Looks like i've been foiled again.

I realize that everything one needs is in the SRD, however I dont have access to a computer on a daily basis... more like bi-weekly. Also, I cant afford paper and ink to print out a document of that size. That's the reason that i'm trying as hard as I am to get a hard copy of the XPH. That, and I love fluff... mmmm... fluff.

You know, I can't believe some of the prices I'm seeing:

Alibris, where I regularly get books worth 200+ dollars for less than 30: 100 dollars for the XPH (http://www.alibris.com/booksearch?title=expanded+psionics+handb ook)

Amazon: 60 bucks (http://www.amazon.com/Expanded-Psionics-Handbook-Roleplaying-Supplement/dp/0786933011/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198775541&sr=8-1)

Wow. Seriously.

However, Google (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=%22Expanded+Psionics+Handbook%22&um=1&ie=UTF-8&checkout=1&sa=X&oi=product_result&resnum=1&ct=checkout-restrict)searching does turn up a copy for 30 from what they consider a 4 star seller (I don't know them personally):
