| reaper508108-22-07, 02:08 PM | This is supposed to be a +0 LA Drow variant for a level 1 party. Any feedback, negative, or positive would be great. This is a version of the drow without all the glamer. • Medium Size • 30' movement. • Humanoid Type (Elf subtype) • Darkvision 120' • +2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution • Daylight Blindness: When exposed abruptly to bright light, the Drow are blinded for one round and are dazzled for all subsequent rounds they are in the area. • Drow with a Charisma of at least 12 may cast deeper darkness (duration 4 hours), and faerie fire as spell-like abilities with a caster level of five a number of times equal to their Charisma modifier, save DCs based on charisma. • +2 bonus to saving throws against spells and spell-like abilities. • +2 bonus to search, Spot, and Listen checks. • Drow never sleep and are immune to magical sleep effects. Drow must perform a 4 hour daily trance to stay coherent and rested. • Drow are automatically proficient with the rapier and the hand crossbow. • Favored Classes: Cleric(f) and Wizard(m). • Automatic Languages: Elven, common, and undercommon. • Bonus Languages: Abyssal, Beholder, Draconic, Drow Sign Language, Dwarven, Gnome, Kuo-Toa, Abyssal, Infernal, and Terran. |
| randalthor08-22-07, 02:46 PM | It seems to be an interesting variant to plat for a PC. I prefer using the Monster Manual version for NPCs, but I might consider using this as a future PC if you don't mind. Keep up the good work |
| RobbyPants08-22-07, 02:58 PM | I would consider making the caster level on the spell-like abilities equal to their character level. The Cha mod is used to set the DC. |
| Khadmus08-22-07, 03:00 PM | I would prefer it if these drow had the Light Blindness of normal drow. |
| reaper508108-22-07, 04:59 PM | Randalthor-Thanks a lot:) RobbyPants-I will think about changing it, but I like this method because it doesn't make the abilities too weak at first level, or too strong later on. I mean really, 20th level faerie fire??!! Khadmus- Light blindness added |
| JarionSilverblades08-22-07, 05:01 PM | Why not just use the Lesser Drow? |
| reaper508108-22-07, 05:03 PM | Where is there a Lesser Drow? |
| SombreNote08-22-07, 05:14 PM | That does not feel like a +0 LA character. That feels like a +1 to me or more. +2 on save throws is huge. People have good argument that dwarfs should be a +1, and they do not have the advantages of your character design. All in all i like it though. |
| Khadmus08-22-07, 05:16 PM | Where is there a Lesser Drow? Indeed. I can't use the search function if my life depended on it. |
| Mojo_Rat08-22-07, 05:43 PM | The new Drow of the underdark has a setup to start playing drow as level 1 characters. has a progression bit for what abilities you get and so on. by the time your an ECL 6 character your a 4rth level class with the 2 ecl though. it doesnt remove the LA just lets you play them at level 1 |
| The_Shaman08-22-07, 05:52 PM | Where is there a Lesser Drow? Player's Guide to Faerun, the "Powerful Races" chapter. Alternatively, just find the drow monster progression (it was somewhere on the boards, dunno where though) and use it. |
| Kelmourne08-22-07, 05:52 PM | Dark elves in my world have darkvision 120ft and light blindness and those are the only changes from the standard elf. Although if this doesn't fit you, you can always just play a regular drow at first level and not level up for 2 levels. If anything I call that a disadvantage. not an advantage. Because of the elf's low constitution, they become especially weak, comparatively due to the lack of HD. |
| JarionSilverblades08-22-07, 06:07 PM | To add a little flavor, I use a modified Lesser Drow for males, and the normal Drow for females, as a way to show that like spiders, female drow are bigger, stronger, and just more powerful. |
| Hebitsuikaza08-22-07, 06:15 PM | Like Kelmourne, I suggest just using the High Elf stat block entirely except for replacing Low Light Vision with Dark Vision 120' and Light Blindness. There is no reason that you have to have a totally seperate and superior stat block for Drow simply because they live underground and have a different skin color. Sure, perhaps the more dangerous society means that Drow usually gain a few levels over their 100+ year lifespan as opposed to normal elves who stay at level 1. But... that's not really something you need to focus on. Also... Different stats for two so closely related genders is the dumbest thing ever. Just because one tends to be more Charismatic in their society does not mean you need to change the stat blocks. Just make a general rule that says that the gender who is better at something should put one of their higher roles into that particular stat. |
| Khatoblepas08-22-07, 09:38 PM | There is no reason that you have to have a totally seperate and superior stat block for Drow simply because they live underground and have a different skin color. Elves aren't like humans. Elves adapt within a single generation. Heck, elves can get a suntan and become another subrace. Drow, on the other hand, are powered by S&M and spider queens. This obviously acts like a catalyst to elf abilities. But yeah, o_O replace the weapon proficiencies with rapier and hand crossbow, and the low-light vision with darkvision, and you're set. |
| reaper508108-22-07, 09:42 PM | Thank you Khatoblepas! In their uber-evilness, the Drow have become greatly supperior to their weak surface kin. |
| natzero08-22-07, 10:17 PM | well: I will think about changing it, but I like this method because it doesn't make the abilities too weak at first level, or too strong later on. I mean really, 20th level faerie fire??!! Khadmus- Light blindness added valiant effort for the most part. but a char with lets say 18 cha. we will say a sorc will cast this at a 20th level at lvl 1 ;p at least we can be happy that fearie fire isnt really super powerful. other wise itd be like my first campaign when the dm gave my 8th lvl pally the Shield of Prator. needless to say the tarrasque had to step in to end that one ;p |
