Hey guys this is the first time we have allowed anything other than a core race to be in a game. We are starting out as 2nd lvl. The Dm said we could have up to a lvl 2 adj if we were willing to start as a common person.

What Race is really worth it. I see people talking about buying off the LA which made me think they regret it later. Is there a good race that would allow me to fly at some point. I am also trying a new class to us the warlock if that make it different.

Btw I did read RoF and looked over some races on the net. But just dont know how it all pans out in the end.

THANKS for any insight

It really depends on what character class you are taking and how far your non-core ruling stretches, like if you can play warforged. As flying goes, you are going to take a huge LA hit for it, so you are better off just buying an item or learning a flying spell later. Buyout of LA is a good thing though. For a +1 LA race i'd reccomend an Aasimar (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/planetouched.htm)if you want to play a good cleric or paladin with nice abilities.

I personally think anything over LA +1 puts you to far behind the party to be safe in encounters, the hit point loss usually hurts too much, or the casting loss.

For an LA +1 race I'd probably go for Poison Dusk Lizardfolk, they get some decent abilities. (Though my own balance sense is set off by them)

Ok Thanks I will make sure I don't go over LA 1.. Btw can you clear up something. I looked for Lizardfolk ( i know you said Poison Dusk Lizardfolk but they didnt have that) on http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/lizardfolk.htm it says "lizardfolk begins with two levels of humanoid" and it also says they have LA+1. So on them I have to be 4th char lvl before I can pick up a class is that correct?

I just found AZNsupermarket Master Player Race List Version 2 so this may end up a moot point with all them nice races. but would still like to get a grasp on how the whole thing works.

Meh I was thinking of it wrong, I guess. Ignore me.

No. That just means they get some extra HP based off of having 2 humanoid levels.. but you don't put the levels on your character. You don't 'spend' EXP on those levels. They just are from the LA.That's not true at all. The amount of experience needed to gain a given level is based on your ECL (Effective Character Level), which counts your LA, your racial hitdice, and your class levels. Thus, a party of ECL 2 characters (which is where somesap's DM is starting the campaign) could be made up of characters with 2 class levels, a +1 LA and a single class level, or (because of the DM's special rules) apparently a +2 LA and a single Commoner class level. The last option would actually be an ECL 3 character, but with only 6+Con hitpoints and no BAB it would be a sub-par combatant for 2nd-level monsters, and with the loss of 3 caster levels it certainly could NOT be a viable caster.

The Petal from MMIII has good bonuses to its ability scores and can fly. It is +2 LA though.

The Poison Dusk Lizardfolk is a variant found in the (I think) MM3 and possibly an Eberron book as well. The standard lizardfolk won't work for what you want.
