| reaper508108-27-07, 07:34 PM | All right guys and gals, this race is an subteranean, lesser version of the Hound Archon I'm working on for a campaign I plan on running in the FRCS. I haven't had time to create back story yet, sorry What do you think? Medium monstruous humanoid Speed: 40 Natural armor bonus: +3 Bite attack 1d4 str+4, con+2, wis+2 SR 10+ class level Automatically proficient with greatsword and longsword 120' darkvision they take double damage from cold damage since they are so used to the warmth of their subteranean homes daylight sensitivity: when abruptly exposed to light, the race is dazzled for one round and takes a -1 penalty on all attacks and precision tasks as long as they stay in the area. armor costs double normal because their body shape is quite strange compared to the average human. Can go on all fours to increase speed to 60ft as a free action but can't use weapons except natural weapons when taking this action. favored class: Paladin +2 LA |
| runestar08-27-07, 08:48 PM | That is a LA+3 at least... |
| Pinkycatcher08-27-07, 09:34 PM | go down on all fours to increase speed by 10 ft? it's alright, but if you are heavily based on your weapon, I don't find it that great, I mean you can already outrun most people with a base 40 ft. |
| Shedeo08-28-07, 12:23 AM | Medium monstruous humanoid Speed: 40 No real problems here. You can get away with these with a level adjust +0 if you really try. Natural armor bonus: +5 This makes it LA +2 at least by itself. Bite attack 1d4 Meh, not bad. Not great, but not bad. str+4, con+2, wis+2, cha+2 This is pushing LA +1. SR 10+ class level I'd say worth at least +1. The Night Elves from the original Warcraft campaign setting got 5+ and they were LA +1 (they also had other miscellaneous abilities, however.) Automatically proficient with greatsword Meh, not worth anything, really, when compared to the other abilities. 120' darkvision Kind of like the greatsword. At this point, hardly worth mentioning. double damage from sonic Interesting, though I don't quite understand why. Helps out a little bit, though likely less than you intended; apart from Psionics, Sonic spells aren't terribly prevalent. daylight sensitivity What's the penalties? can't use sheilds Why not? They can use greatswords? How does their race prevent them from strapping a lump of steel to their arm? I'd see a race capable of at least using shields before weapons (take Dragons, for example; can't use weapons, but they could (theoretically) use shields.) armor costs double normal I take it this is because they have a non-humanoid body type? Again, sounds kind of fishy, but if you want to go with that, its your prerogative. Can go on all fours to increase speed to 50ft but can't use weapons except natural when in this form. Makes sense, I suppose. Not really a wonderful ability; I'd never use it, but doesn't mean its worthless. favored class: barbarian Okay, this is the part that makes no sense to me. Hound ARCHON. Part of being an ARCHON is being more Lawful than the most honorbound Knight. Barbarians are an exclusively non-lawful class. I think more of what you were trying to go for here was a humanoid/dog race, not particularly a Hound Archon race. I suggest going back to the drawing board with this one. Personally, I would go more of a Half-Giant approach with this race. Shoot for LA +2. Compare it to other no-Racial Hit Dice LA +2 races (I hate to suggest it, but Drow is the only thing that comes to mind.) If it would help, I could also toss a few ideas out there, like so. My example: Underhounds Medium Monstrous Humanoid +4 Strength, +2 Con Underhounds are physically strong and tough. Base Speed 40'. Powerful Build: Treated as being large size for all purposes but grappling. Because of their massive size, combined with their inhuman bodytype, the base cost (not any magical enhancement costs) of any armor they wear is multiplied by 1.5. Darkvision 120' +4 Racial bonus on all Listen Checks. Underhounds have incredibly sensitive ears, capable of hearing all but the most minute of sounds. Audio Weakness: Because of their sensitive ears, Underhounds suffer a -2 penalty on all saves versus sonic-based effects. Also, they must make a fortitude save (if a power or spell, DC as appropriate, if a natural ability DC 10 + 1/2 creature's hit dice + creature's appropriate ability score modifier (whatever its entry says its save DCs are based on) or be deafened for 1d4+1 rounds after the effect. Martial Weapons Training: Underhounds are automatically proficient with the Longsword and Greatsword. Dogs of War: Underhounds have the ability to crouch down on all fours, gaining a +10 bonus to their base speed when they do so. Spell Resistance equal to 10 + Hit Dice. Favored Class: Barbarian. Level Adjustment: +2. That, I think, is about balanced. Maybe a little weak for a +2 LA. You could always toss the bite back in there, maybe something else. |
