Human. That extra bonus feat goes a long way if you spend it right.

Heh, this is kind of a vague question. I'd recommend using the psionics rules (they're in the srd (http://d20srd.org)), Psionic Weapon is a very easy way to add extra damage to an attack. A human psychic warrior can have the repetoire of neat tricks that normally only fighters are capable of. Alternately, you can pick a psionic race and play something generic like a paladin or ranger, and take advantage of the Psionic Weapon/Shot/Fist feats without having to be a manifester.

So...you want a melee character that isn't a fighter or barbarian with potential magic.

The only core classes that fit this definition are the ranger and paladin, maybe a battle orientated cleric would work too. Hell, you could try and talk your DM into giving your monk a full BAB bonus.

For the races mentioned above I suggest humans if you're new to DND but otherwise you could try something a bit bigger and more exotic like a half-ogre.

Berguiler and The Duskblade classes from the PH2.
Hexblade from Complete Warrior.
Warmage from Complete Arcane.

I'd go with The Duskblade.
