A Question of Uldras [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-09-07, 11:41 PM I have a Question Regrading Uldras (Frostburn Page 38-40, Chapter 2, Racial Traits on Page 39)

Uldras by definition are a tundra race...and their racial traits represent that, but my question regards the Discomfort a Fey feels when touching Cold Steel.

The discomfort being equal to holding rotten fish (that being paraphrased from the book)

Could someone Explain this discomfort...
If the Uldra were not cold based i would understand this discomfort.

11-09-07, 11:58 PM It comes from them being Fey. The "Cold" isn't describing temperature, it's just a type of metal material that is mined deep underground and forged at a lower temperature than normal (still with fire, though). I don't know the historical or whatever effect that causes the discomfort (so if you are asking specifically about that, I'm sorry) but the word cold there has nothing to do with the material itself actually being cold, so there's no reason to think that Uldra would be an exception to the Fey/cold iron relationship.

Edit: After reading about the Uldra specifically a little more, they actually are a bit of an exception, because normally a Fey using a cold iron weapon takes a penalty in it's use (like -2 to attack roll) and some Fey take double damage from cold iron weapons or if they have DR it is normally over Cold Iron. So, Uldra have an advantage over other Fey in that it just doesn't feel great in their hands, it's like gross to them or something.

11-10-07, 12:02 AM Cold Iron is more accurately phrased as Cold-Forged Iron.
It is not that the iron itself is cold to the touch, but the manner in which it was handled from the time it was taken from the ground, to the time it has been formed into a weapon.
Basically, such metal has a different crystaline (nearly all solid metals are essentially crystaline if examined at the molecular level) structure than if it were shaped using other methods.

I see what my problem was.
I had thought that Cold Iron was IRON at a COLD temperature
not that the Iron was Created differently...
