One of my players wants to play a dopelganger.
In the monster manual it says that the dople has +4 LA.
It also says that it has 4 monster levels.
So, when my player is a wizard level 1.
Is his ECL 5 (1 +LA) or 9 (1+LA+monster HD)?
Thanks in advance ^^

I was beaten to it, but yes, its 9.
And taking a wizard with ECL of 4+4 is suicidal, btw.

Depends on the setting, really.
If he is playing a doppelganger in a mainly diplomacy/political setting with minimal combat and lots of conversation(where it truly excels), it might not be a bad idea to have a few lvs in a variety of classes to better "fake" the classes he is seeking to emulate.

Playing a doppelganger in a combat setting however. Now that is suicidal...:P

I dont mind doppels, i actualy quite like that race. Im just saying, that a wizard, that is 8 lvls of spellcasting behind its ECL is suicidal :)
A rogue, ninja, or bard would be a lot better choices imo.

I'd never play a spellcaster with LA at all, but it's not me, it's my player ^^

Changeling from eberron/mm3 is a better choice for a PC (IMO)
