As described in the monster manual, ghosts are an template put on someone who died but cannot rest peacefully.

Some undeads like mohrgs or the like may be advanced by enhancing their abilities or adding new hit dices. But the ghost entry says that ghosts cannot be advanced.

My group now has aghost who accompanies them o their journey for the simple joy of it. He fights at their side and kills as much enemies as the others do. The ghost remains the same strength while characters are gaining experience.

So my question is, can I advance this ghost in some matter?

Thanks!

Where does it say they cannot be advanced?
It makes sense that they cannot take more racial HD, but class lvs should be good to go...:)

I see nothing in the SRD entry that suggests that. Just say they advance by class levels.

It's just... Monster manual. The entry says: "Advancement: -" I thinks it means No Advancement. Butif you think it is ok, I'll do this...:)

Is that their sample? It's probably a mistake. They don't have one in the SRD. The template itself says nothing about changing advancement, so there's no reason for it to.

The sample, the fifth level fighter, has in the advancement entry:"Advancement:-" and in the adding the template entry there's nothing mentioned about advancement.

I'll first give him a level as a rogue which gives him the ability to deal more damage in combat with his ghost touch weapon. I think at first this should be enough.:P

Any intelligent being can gain class levels.

Ever looked at the Ghostwalk (http://www.amazon.com/Ghostwalk-Campaign-Dungeons-Dragons-Setting/dp/0786928344/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-1206913-8137726?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177216986&sr=8-2)book?

It's 3.0, and would need a slight adjustment with metaplot, but would provide you with a TON of advancement opportunity. Special classes, and feats allowing you to specialize your ghostly powers. Heck, the whole point of the book is to play a "ghost" character in an on-going campaign....

I'm creating a ghost myself, and I don't see where it says no advancement. It says all current and future hit dice become d12, which implies it can be advanced, and if you didn't want to advance with classes, the back of the MM tells you how to advance monsters, including undead

I don't see where it says no advancement.

Some monsters (for example the tarrasque :P) have a point that says how many hit dices can be added and when the monster grows in size. Other creatures have "by character class" in this point.
Some creaures, like ghosts and hydrae, have a simple "-" at this point.

...it's just below alignment.:D

Well, I shall look for the Ghostwalk book, anyway.

According to my MM, the ghost lacks the advancement line. Not the "-" as you mentioned, but rather, there is no mention about it altogether. Not even a token advancement "-" line.

May I know where you found your advancement line?:)

I don't see why a ghost wizard could not continue to advance in wizard lvs or something...

Intelligent creatures that are reasonably humanoid in shape most commonly advance by adding class levels. Creatures that fall into this category have an entry of "By character class" in their Advancement line. When a monster adds a class level, that level usually represents an increase in experience and learned skills and capabilities.
My opinion is that ghosts do not have an Advancement option because they are intended to hang around until they complete whatever keeps them from moving along to the afterlife; if you have a ghost who has not scuttled along the trail simply because he does not want to, there is nothing keeping him from learning something new.
Ghostwalk has lots of things for characters who haven't yet passed on to the other side.

Even though hydra have a - for advancement, they have a number of HD equal to their number of heads; it's pretty easy to advance them in that regard.

Ah!

Well, according to the FAQ, the English version of the rules supersedes anything in translated versions. Ghosts can advance just fine. Hope that helps without sounding too snobbish.

Anyone have a Libris Mortis handy? I would imagine advancement is addressed in there that would supercede the MM.

Yes, why? There's nothing about ghosts as far as I can see. The monster classes do not include them.:(
