| nighttree09-04-07, 12:11 AM | We have used the LA "buy off" rules on a few characters over the last few months, but it has always been +2 or less. I am looking at a character with a template of +5 LA. Now if I understand this correctly....? At 15th level, I take a 4,000 point penalty.....dropping my LA to +4. BUT.....If I just paid for the LA "by level" at the start of progression, by 3,000 exp I have paid off +3 of my LA, and by 4,000 exp I am on my way to paying off the 4th of my +5 LA  I MUST be missing something. |
| Omega_Grey09-04-07, 12:31 AM | You would buy off your first of the five level adjustments at CLASS level 15 (minimum of 20th level assuming no racial HD) resulting in a loss of around 19,000 exp, you would then buy the second one off at class level 18 resulting in another loss of around 22,000 exp for a total of 41,000 exp so far. You would lose the third at class level 21 resulting in another loss of 24,000 for a total now of 65,000 exp. The fourth would be lost at class level 24 for a loss of 26,000 exp and a total of 91,000 now. The final would be lost at class level 27 for a loss of 28,000 and a total of 109,000 exp. All this is assuming you have no racial hit dice adjustments bringing the minimum level up. Hope this helps, if you are still confused, or if you think I have this wrong let me know. |

| Omega_Grey09-04-07, 01:12 AM | Ah, you are indeed correct calronmoonflower. I knew I had to be missing something in the formula for determining what level you had to be. |
| BilopTheFleshwarper09-04-07, 04:08 AM | either way the amount of XP you're losing means you basicly lose a level so that is what balances out the loss of LA. |
| EjoThims09-04-07, 08:09 AM | Yes. When you 'buy off' LA you pay one level's worth of xp, lose on LA, and gain one LA. Your ECL does not change but you lose xp, lose a level adjust, gain a class level, and gain a class level. If xp is being divided correctly, this will allow you to catch back up in short time, if not, you will still eventually be the same level as the rest of your party, it will just take a bit longer. |
