The biggest trouble is the racial traits, because I would like a +0 level adjusment, o only one, two o three levels of monster class (like Savage Species). Can you help me? Do you like my idea? Usually some rumours are walked about matriarchal societies of warrior women, living in total isolation from the rest of civilitation, without males who don´t ordering them doing the cleaning or concerting the marriage of their daughters. This idea is a abomination for some people (-how if the drows weren´t enough!!!-) and for others is a legend inveted by a bard who dreamed a place where he were welcome,…desired and loved, or the escape fantasy of a rebel girls tired washing dishes and lookinf after her litle brother. But there is some truth about it.. and in fact more and more the stories of great deeds done by intrepid amazons are in the talk of the place. Unfortunately few people suffer so many misunderstanding. If elfs recieve mockeris by the gossips because their alleged few masculinity, the amazons justly because all the opposite. Personality: From a far land where the arcane magic, the dragons and the most of humanoid races are unknown the named ¨outer world¨ is very fascinating and frightul at the one moment for the amazed amazons. From a culture where they are used to giving orders or advices to the men, the lest ofense by unknown people, above all the male chauvinist or misogine talks, is too angering, although they can control their ire, if it´s convenient. It can be said pro them what they love a good talk with somebody who show a high culture level (and he can forgiving her excesive sincerity and annoying resistance to changing opinion). Although very suspicious, and even antipathetic with all unknown people, they show a great generosity and surrender to nearest beings. A lot of people are surprised by their great sensibility for all types of art, like architecture, jewelry, music or poetry (even the fashion, too it has to be said) without losing her bravery to fighting. Physical Description: Only the humans, the race of their ancients ancestors, have so rich variety of etnic features. Between 5 and 8 feets tall, and weigh from 80 to 130 pounds. Specially in great diversity colour of in their skin, hear or eyes colours can be singned. Some amazons has a very clear skin with sea blue and black hair with blue bright reflection, or a bronze skin matching her dark green hair (natural color, without any die). In spite of the said by anbody, their aren´t hermaphrodite at all. Their factions can be some time some… androgynous, but they are female for all efects. They need humanoid males (most of humanoid is useful) to have descent. To the first look they would be almost totally undistinguishable of human women, if any things didn´t acusse them, like… their vigorous constitution and….few curves in the silhouette for the men taste. There aren´t graceful, thin nor svelte, like elf girls for example, but neither too plump. Their jaws are often as square as the men, but with their (female) big and round cheekbones too. In spite of this, some males don´t find them wanting charm in her rough beauty. A very divulged myth about them tells one of her breast is amputated when the amazon to using better the bow. The truth is they usually have not only few bosom but also a lot of times a sine is some bigger than other. This lighty unaestetic trait is a little trouble for amazons who looks for husband, but never to feed babies with her mother milk. Other inconvenient trait is her body hair. They haven´t beard, but only a whyskers a bit longer the rest of women, and sometimes a little moustache on the upper lip and a charmming goatee in the point of the chin. They are a bit more fatter, but usually not too and two receding hair in the temple, but they never have baldness troubles. They are adults in 20 years old, but usually they not get married until 80 years old. They midle age is in the 100 years, and they are old in 125 years, and the amazons always die near 400 years old by natural causes before reaching venerable age. Relations: Very famous by their strong character the amazons recieve a great diversity or reactions when they find for the first times the until unknown races from the ¨outer world¨. The amazons like preferentialy the friendly centaurs, posiblely because these are very known (and tolered) in the amazon home land. If a elfs could exceed the initial mutual suspicius fear then he/she could easly turning in the best confiadantes of some amazon, but the most of times the elfs find them as rude as dwarfs. Some bard stories about the love-hate relation between a dwarfs and a amazon have became very known. The amazons like the strong dwarf loyalty to their family and clan, but not their patriarchal society. Some surprised dwarf has met the one´s match in some amazon so strong, valient, sincere and pighead like him. The interacial marriages between amazons and dwarfs aren´t unknown, specially in where the percentage of female dwarfs child bith is very lower than boys babies (all the opposite in amazons). The amazons can not avoid see litles races, like haflings and gnomes, a bit like… and this is very annoying for these. However this first impression soon disapears when the litle races tries a trick with amazons (rarely they obtain something because the amazons are very distrust by nature). Despite the supposition of somepeople the amazons don´t like the drow society. By their demographic troubles, each born baby, boy or girl, is a great treasure who has to been looked after by the whole comunity, but drows kill each others with too frecuency and frivolity. But the biggest rage of amazons is reserverd for their enemies the savage socerers-warrior women from the kingdom of Lemnos (other matriarchal society ruled by dark sage-like witchs, and where new borns (boy or girl) are sacrified or be transformed in inhuman monters… Alignment: For her youth the amazons is very indepent and rebellious, so then the caotic alignmet is the normal but when is older and has moree responsibilities (like a family or teaching a pupil) the amazons tend to be lawul. In the amazon litle comunities where everybody acquaint all the amazons with a attitude who suppose a menace for the rest soon are ejected …..or eliminated, therefore the evil alingment is very rare, but nevertheless often one of those few evil amazons who have survived and became more powerful get a fame of legendary proportions, beinf a great disgrace for her ¨sisters¨ . Amazons lands: Lot of people has strong suspicion amazon home is in a remote island, or a hidden villge in the deepest from the unexplored forests, and even (the most possible) they amazons came frome their own demiplane. Amazons who speak about their home land describe it with a fertile earth and a sunny but light weather, but without a lot of things (creatures, arcane magic or tecnologic knowledge like complex mecanic machines) easly found in the ¨outer world¨. It´s true what in amazons comunities the women are more numerous that males, but the reason isn´t these would be sacrificied in the temples, but girls are born that males babies and overcoat the amazon longevity are very much longer than the males, doing possible a amazon matriarch meet her great-great-grandchild born fifty years after the death (by oldness) of their grandfather. But a couple of known cases generaly the men don´t live like slaves or citizen of second category, and even the almost totalily of the regular army is formed by men. (Amazons think it´s a useless sacrifice risking women, with a longer life hope and higher studies level, in the war). More than a male has tried get the power, but his shorter lifes always has avoid eliminating the matriarchate, and so, his women (mother, wife, sister) has been a very strong influence. They are amazons women in the elite force, but usually the most dangerous mission is for men. Religion: Usually amazons don´t like speak about the deties from their home land, but ones whoe are all the opposite. Amazons meet some deities, (see Olimpian pantheon from "Deities and demigods") but only are follower of fourth goddes, one for the fire and home, other for the hunting and the nature, other for the wisdow and just war and the last for the love. Amazons don´t believe much in any male deity, nor like patriarch societies of the ¨outer world¨. As it there was some type of religious schism or conflict between the prietess of diferents goddess, perhaps strong ideologic disagreement between these, but whole amazons trie hidding it all the possible. Languages: Insolated of the rest of world the first amazons who have gone out from their secret kingdom only knew their native language, and perhaps the sylvan in the best case. Lot of time after amazons speak common and one or two languages more (even the draconic!!!). Names: Normaly ¨universal¨ names like virtues (Hope, Victory, Faith, Felicity), jewes (Topaz, Ruby, Jade, Esmerald) or flowers (Rose, Margaret, Violet…) but lastly females elfs name are more popular between the amazons, but the who dedicate their life to the fight, who like the dwargen names. Some posibles names are: Atalanta, Sophia, Deianira, Cassandra, Helen, Diana, Minerva, Penelope, Andromeda, Hiopolyta, Persephone, Euridice, Sibyl, Hermione, Melissa, Calisto, Circe, Electra, Xena (where I have heard this last name?) :confused: :confused: Adventures: In the past usuaally the amazon who left their home did it by been ejected criminals or looking for couple, but in the last two centuries the emigration to the ¨outer world¨ has became a great necessity by three reasons. - apparition of strange phenomenons of unknown nature what have forcing to amazons looking whole possible information. - Then men is sooner older and die by oldness and natural causes before. Racial traits: • +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma. • Medium: As Medium creatures, amazons have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size. • Base land speed is 30 feet, but amazons can walk 25 feet with medium armor or load. • Common Languanges: the amazon, the common. Aditional; elf, dwarf, wood and giant. • Racial bonus +3 to jump skill. • No negative modifier to Disguise as male humans, and only –1 for medium humanoid males of other races. • + 2 Salvation Fortitud Bonus for paralysis and petrification. • Aditional feats: • Energy Resistence (positive and negative) 3. Three points are always dedudect (amazon wanted it o didn´t) when spell or power with positive or negative energy (usually only of cure/inflict wounds and a bit more). (This trait is lost when the women became a creature without constitution like undead or contructs). • Good Wealth: All caracther (PC or PnC) has a circumstantial bonus +2 bonus to healing skill when he/she help to a amazon. • Father blood. Amazons can having lineage with males of lot of medim humanoid races, usually humans most of the times, but some there were too with elfs and dwarfs (!!!!) (other races can be possible with the DM licence). The sons and daughters of this interacial union almost always are fertile, (and granchild…). If a amazon give birth to a girl, always will be a amazon, and if the sprout is a boy, he is the same race that his biological father for all efects. The amazon can choose having the racial subtype of one of their fathers, and then she is of that race for all efects (using magic item, prestige class….). A amazon only can have a unique racial subtype..(you don´t want a amazon with simultaneous levels of prestige class for differents races, like arcane archer for elfsand dwarfs, and simultaneously darwen defender, do you?) • Body spaces for magic item. Amazons neves have like the magic, and this phobia has haven a cost. Amazons can not wear so many magic item like the rest of people. - Only a space for the head, eyes and neck - Only a space for the four extremities (arms and legs) - Only a magic object can be used over the trunk. - Only a magic object in the waist. (In fact magic belts are very popular in amazon fighters) No trouble with magical weapon (swords, axes, bows..) or shields. • Longevity: Amazons always die by nature cause before reaching the venerable state. (You can understan this like the third age amazons never has positive nor negative modifiers for venerable age). • Reciprocal distrust: Amazons don´t like the lie, and they are very bad liers. +4 circumstantial Bonus for Sense Motive skill for amazons and no-amazon characters in all social interaction. • Frankness: Amazon society hate the lie and punish it hurdly. Bluff skill is always is trans-class skill for the amazons for the five first levels. • Favored class: When a amazon PC is created one of this list has to been choosen: Warrior, Barbarian, Paladin, Samurai, Swashbuckler (see Complete Warrior) or Knight (from Handbook Player II) (perhaps some fighter basic class more in the list if DM authorice it, for example Crusader, Warblade and Swordsage from Tome of Batle: book of nine swords). After this election would be done, then that will be always their favored class por that PC. (of other PC can choose other different favored class) • Level Adjustment: +0.

I'd build around prestige classes and whatever as amazon seems like totally inappropriate as a race go with human and make her a barbarian/fighter/whatever,have fun...
Luis_Carlos 01-28-07, 04:17 AM	Well, my idea was a ¨lighter¨ version of the classic myth. I didn´t want a matriarchal society were the men were ¨objects to be used and thrown out¨. I know my own concept of amazons for D&D is very different of classic mythology, but it doesn´t matter for me. (Are the Tolkien´s elfs accurate to the Norse myths?). Amazon like a own race whose lives are longer than men for me is the most ¨politically correct¨ idea to justify their matriarchal society. If matriarchal society were abolished for some reason, the amazons´ longer lifes would be the perfect excuse to avoid the (re)founding of a new almost-patriarchal society. My idea of Amazons are they are human´s descentant who were transformed in other race by the goddes (I´m was thinking in from Olimpian pantheon; Hera, Afrodita, Atenea and Diana, but I didn´t name them explicitly to give amazons a idea more universal for diferents campaing settings...Greyhawk, FO, Mystara, Eberron, Bithright...). And about a prestige class for amazons... I have a better idea, the amazon paragon class. (Have you read Unearthed Arcane?) But the trouble is my poor experencie to balance the levels and the Rating Challence with class abilities too powerful or weak. Here I need your help. Thanks very much for your participacion. They are litles objects (on body, but the most of times in the weapon and shields, for example bows or feathers in the spears) what give ¨ provisional feats¨ to amazons who use them. Have you seen the runic magic in Forgorten Realms? It´s a litle like the potions or the psionic tatoos. And don´t worry about the body space. This thread is here for your comments and suggestions. The backroud is like I want, but the racial traits can change if you desire it.

Luis_Carlos 07-12-07, 11:28 AM	Perhaps amazons could be a good race of martial adepts from Tome of Batle, the book of nine swords. why not a free Stance or Maneuver in the racial traits? Well, I have a new idea about their background. The origin of their matriarchal society could be caused the great rate of pseudhermaphroditism, specially in the royal family. (Perhaps some deity has some a great and twisted sense of humor in the past). In the most of births in the amazon society (apparently) almost whole babies are girls but.... really half of these girls... are genetically boys or males. whats happens? A trouble with hormones where the babies with DNA XY don´t develope male organs for the pregnancy...But for the adolescence these "girls" start to have mustache, low voice, and they haven´t to ducking or sitting to do wee-wee :D Their bodies finally show their true nature and they can get married with women and having biological sons and daugthers. Can you imagining it? Whole children have the same education (and clothes) and Nobody knows until they are near 11 years old if they are to be husbands or wifes.
Balthanon 07-12-07, 12:07 PM	I wouldn't try adjusting the magic items that the race can wear-- it is too hard to judge how that is going to impact the character. I would just drop that section entirely and leave it as a cultural note for the player to use or not use as they wish. For the last idea, why would the amazons need to develop standard male human primary sexual characteristics at all? It's similar to the standard stereotypes regarding dwarves, except in reverse essentially. All amazons could look female and still have an approximately even split when they reach puberty as to who is "fathering" the children.
Luis_Carlos 07-12-07, 12:45 PM	The limit of body space could be something too difficoult to estimating the level adjusment like PCs. I never have questioned my idea needs a P.E.A.C.H. Adn for me the atrattction of the backround of amazons like race is the thread of the relation between males and females. My concept of amazons like race is more politically correct because they aren´t man-hating. They love males and get married with them to have sons and daughters... but a question is raised: Whats is the true female nature?. My amazons has a great trouble with the hair in their legs, and waxing is more difficoult. The have little breast most of times..and too a litle vellus (body hair) in their faces sometimes.. They haven´t tendency to a sleder body like elfs at all, but a bit like the actress Kate Wisslet (in Heavenly Creatures, 1994 Peter Jackson´s movie). If the males elfs seems thin metrosexuals... the amazons are the opposite. They seems a "marimacho" (= mannly or tomboy)...but their minds are emotionally sensitive, and with a great love for their family (husbands, sons and daughters). And rebember, this thread is only my own suggestion. You can do your own alteration for your campaings. I only want my ideas help you getting inspiration.

The issue, to me, is that if the race grew up without knowing whether they would be male or female (as it is in our cultures) it is very unlikely that they would grow up as "girls". They would be raised in a very asexual way and there also isn't really anything to lead to a matriarchal society within that context. All members of the society start as equal as it is possible to be-- so what would suddenly drive half of them to begin giving orders to the men? Stating that they don't quite match our vision of feminine beauty and are still loving to their family doesn't necessarily take out the "politically incorrect" overtones. (Though it doesn't necessarily add them either.)

The babes without "stick of love" are educated like... asexually... until 11 years, when the changes starts...and the true sex is clear. You will not see a amazon child (three years old, for example) with a pink knot or a clothe with litles flowers and hearts... Some adorns like earrings (and some piercing too) are communs in both generes, and a boy with skirt is something normal for them like a Scottih or a Greek folk male costume. And if you dont´want, in your own campaing this pseuhemafroditism hasn´t to bee too common or general... perhaps it (almost) only happens in the royal family (and some nobles houses too) because a pagan deity cursed them to punishing a machista (=male chauvinist) behavior of a ancient king with his wife and daughters.

Like I said, for my campaign, I would probably take an amazon nation in a completely different direction-- most likely essentially eliminating males from the equation altogether and making it mostly cultural/magical (for a solution to having children). I was just providing feedback for your idea.

I had thought in rewritting the first post soon, but before I would like known the opinion of other members of forum. I like my idea of background, but perhaps some of the racial traits have to be changed. I´m thinkin in giving them like adition racial trait the free feat Extra Granted Maneuver or Extra Readied Maneuver, from tome of Batle: Book of nine swords. I would like creating a parangon class (see Uneartherd Arcana) for amazons, but my experience with adjustment level is very poor. I have thought in a new creature or race like archyenemy of amazons, the Lemnians are a people of females monster, who killed almost whole their males in the far past, and they were cursed by the deities. They look like a crazy mix of harpies, hags and Gorgons. I haven´t decided their powers yet, but I would like do a monster class with them. The Lemnias have "males" in their communitys.. but they aren´t sentients beings but....midnless plants-like with the form of statues....some of them were males humanoids time ago... When a Lemnian want to being mother then she goes to a one of these plant-figures... and does it to getting the seed. Some of the plant-figures are animated like undeads or construct to being used like slaves. Then they can having a low intelligence (or even a great memory to reciting lots of written pages).
