I am in the process of creating an Amethyst Dragon Class similar to the Dragon classes presented in Dragon Magazine Issues #320 and #332. I have managed to nail down most of the Dragon class, but I am having trouble figuring out where to place the Amethyst Dragon's Force Resistant, Poison Immunity, and Planar Travel abilities as well as the Fire Resistance 30 that all Gem Dragons possess. The first three special abilities are picked up by the dragon when it is just a wyrmling. For my Amethyst Dragon Class, a Dragon PC is considered a wyrmling from levels 1-10.

I am thinking that the Force Resistant (gives an Amethyst Dragon a +4 bonus on saving throws against force-based effects such as Magic Missile) and Poison Immunity abilities could be a part of the Dragon's racial traits. But for some reason, I also can't help but wonder if they are acquired after 1st-level in the dragon class. :embarrass

As for the Planar Travel ability, I am thinking that it is a limited version of the Plane Shift spell because it allows the dragon to go between the Prime Material Plane and the Inner Planes. And since this particular spell can only be picked up by 10th-level Clerics, 14th-level Sorcerers and 14th-level Wizards, I am thinking that a Wyrmling Amethyst dragon is likely to pick it up at either it's 9th or 10th level.

Lastly, I am assuming that the Fire Resistance 30, that all Gem Dragons have, can be leveled up like the Resist Energy Spell. Fire Resistance 10 at 4th level, Fire Resistance 20 at 7th level and Fire Resistance 30 at 11th level?

Once I have everybody's input, I'll see about posting the Amethyst Dragon class on this particular forum thread. :)

Are you basing the stats off of RavinRay's Gem Dragon 3.5 update PDF?

Thanks. :) My work on the Amethyst Dragon monster class was somewhat difficult because the Gem dragons have a number of elements that set them apart from their Chromatic and Metallic Kin. These guys have the ability to travel to and from the Material Plane and the Inner Planes. An ability which needed to be leveled appropriately for balance's sake. :P These guys have Fire Resistance 15 (not Fire Resistance 30 anymore thanks to a quick check of the update booklet for the Monster Manual 2 on wizards.com. I had to level that to the best of my ability. :P I also had to find their class skills (which, again, are in the update booklet for the MM 2) And let's not forget that these guys are into psionics instead of arcane magic. ;)
Designing the racial traits was easy thanks to the layouts for the Chromatic dragon classes in Dragon Magazine issue #332 and the Metallic dragon classes in issue #320. Designing the level advancement table for the Amethyst Dragon was also easy. At the end of Chapter 3 in the Draconomicon, I found the LAs for the Amethyst dragon's Wyrmling, Very Young and Young age categories as well as the type of dragon who's level progression table I could compare it too. So for the Amethyst Dragon class, I based off its level progression table off of the Blue Dragon class in issue #332.

I am definitely looking forward to working on the Crystal Dragon class next. :)
