"Buying off" Racial Hit Dice? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Does anyone have a suggestion for creating a method of doing so?

I'm asking this, because I would like to play a silver dragon in a 11th level campaign, but would also like..you know...class abilities...(as they tend to make things rather fun, do they not?)

There is none really. Hit dice are even worse than level adjusts, its the way WotC smacks players for wanting to be creative and wanted to play something non humanoid.:raincloud

10-11-07, 04:28 PM I don't know about getting rid of, but you could simply start at level 1 with 1 HD and say "I cannot take any class until I have X number of HD".

For your case- you're a Dragon! Dragon HD are better than most classes, and you get racial abilities that act like class features. You don't need to buy off those HD- just don't take any more and level up from there, if you like.

While I agree with the sentiment, spikes, HD are much, much better than LA, and are a step in the right direction, not the wrong one.

10-11-07, 10:58 PM I don't like hit dice either, I'm pretty sure the only to get around them and stay "balanced" would be to redesign the race you want completely, feel free to look at my thread, "Alleviating Racial Hit Dice (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=932240)." All in all, I'd say the thread was a failure, but maybe you can take something from it or even add to it.

Note: A dragon will probably be quite a bit harder to redesign than a bugbear. 'Redesigning races' is not for all races with hit dice; if headache or abdominal pains occur, stop redesigning races, and consult your doctor.
