I'm thinking of adding an Anthropomorphic Wolf to my campaign, but I'm a tad confused by possibly conflicting rules, In Savage species it states, for the case of a Wolf, it will reset it's INT to 11, and get Wisdom +2 and Charisma +4, then it refers you to table A-58.

Which states Wolves get : +2 Str, +4 Dex,Con and Wis.

So does this mean an Anthropomorphic Wolf gets +2 Str, +4 Dex, + 4 Con, +6 Wis and +4 Cha? Seems a bit much to me.. so I just wanted to check.

The anthropomorphic template is broken--almost beyond repair.

Is... that a yes to both stats stacking then? ^^

They do not stack. Table A-58 provides the template modifiers for anthropomorphic beings, not the modifiers for the base animals.

For an anthropomorphic wolf, roll stats normally and add +2 to Strength and +4 to Dexterity, Constitution, and Wisdom.

Ah I see, phew. So does that mean he won't be stuck at Int 11 as well?

The anthropomorphic template is broken--utterly and totally and forever beyond repair.

That sentence wasn't.

The "+4 Cha" that you see means that you take a normal wolf, which has a Cha of 6, and add four to it to get the average anthropomorphic wolf's Cha. So, with that modifier of +4, an average anthro-wolfie has a 10 Cha, which means no modifier (as you saw in the big chart).

Hope I cleared that up.

Save yourself grief and use the Lupin race from the recent 'Best of the Dragon' book. Even if you don't like the fluff, the mechanics are solid.

The template entry is there for the off chance that someone came up with an animal that had not been published in a WotC source book up to that point. Table A-58 is the template already applied to all the animals in Monster Manual 1. The only use of the template over the table is if you homebrew your own animals, (such as I did with a rabbit... just for the sake of using this template.)

To all the naysayers, there's nothing inherently broken with the template per se... it's the level adjustment they gave to some of the anthropomorphic versions of the animals. For the most part, I haven't seen a problem with the more common animals, (cat, dog, wolf, tiger, leopard, jaguar...).

Of course, I made it a point to double check with YabaTheWhat's feature points to double check anything before I made it into a PC/NPC, but that's just me...

Maybe some day when I have a lot of free time I'll go through all the animals on that list and correct their LA.

Thank you, Professor Evil of Cambridge.
But unfortunately, it's legit.
... as long as you're not in an English major.

I have a question about this anthro-template; if it causes so much trouble, why not make a template that just grants an Alternate Form of something bipedal with hands and the 'Humanoid (augmented Animal)" type?
Not stat boosts, no CR modification.

Or you could just take the stats, modify the size to be no more than large, or less than small size, and change the type to Monstrous Humanoid. That should really be all you need most of the time, and it gives you a creature that should satisfy all your furry wants and needs.

Sure, that is of course, if you want all your furry cat girls to have the charisma of a half-ogre tifleing, and the INt of black pudding....

Personally I use a combo of Savage Species, Masters of the wild and the moster manuals for my characters. That and I'd like to get the Ironclaw series which I can't seem to find at the moment.

Most of them are fine, or even underpowered for the LA.

The three which are generally flagged as being problematic are the elephant, whale, and bat. (And the bat is only so if combined with a primary divine spellcasting class.)

I don't think it's a violation of the CoC to post a link to a gaming company web site, especially when it's not a d20 or OGL company.
