| ewancummins07-20-07, 11:49 PM | I agree with the commonly held notion that the old Savage Species anthropomorphic races are broken. Ah, but I rather like the basic idea of talking critters. Anyone have suggested fixes? |
| Neutronium_Dragon07-21-07, 12:19 AM | Most of them are fine. There are a few which are dodgy, primarily the whale, elephant, and (depending on how you take it) bat. Generally they can be fixed with an LA tweak, but I don't have my book handy to refer to at the moment. |
| Fireclave07-21-07, 12:23 AM | I don't think a single template, no matter how much you try to fix it, is going to be able to cover the vast potential varieties of anthropomorphic creatures while still being balanced. You would probably better off balancing each as a separate race and/or lumping multiple creatures into the same race (dogs, foxes, are wolves, for example, would all be members of the same canine race). |
| TheAnthroDM07-21-07, 12:25 AM | Yeah, a single template cannot properly convert the vast enterspace(Is this even a word? What am I trying to say?) that is anthropomorphic animals. .....yeah. |
| Jaxgaret07-21-07, 01:09 AM | If you want a quick and dirty solution, adding a single racial HD to each and every anthro animal should come pretty close to being balanced. That would make Small = 2RHD, Medium = 3RHD, Large = 4RHD. But it would be better to look at each one individually and come up with an appropriate starting ECL. |

I love furry races myself, here's a shocker for some of you: Straight furry gamer who has no desire to have intimate relations with actual animals, my fellow furs, especially femmes but that sort of thing I leave to imagination and certain other venues not fit for inclusion here. Depending on what you want, there are numerous races out there that can fit the bill so to speak. If feline is what you want, in virtually any stripe, take a good hard look at the cat folk. If you want to play a canid (wolves, coyotes, dogs, foxes and others of this type) then get yourself a copy of the Dragon Compendium or borrow it from someone who has it and read over the Lupin. You may wanna tweak it a bit but that should get you started. Others you may wanna do on a case by case basis. I have some races that I created if you want to take a look. If you want me to post them here, let me know what type you're looking for. I have races of anthro skunks, camels, armadillos, bears, raccoons, rabbits, badgers/wolverines and weasel types among others. |
| Tytalus07-21-07, 10:32 PM | I agree with Neutronium_Dragon: most of the AAs are fine, with only a few (albeit glaring) exceptions. I fact, the existing template does an outstanding job in that respect. Maybe it'd be helpful to take a look at the worst offenders and see how we can adjust the template to account for them. |

But what if you want anthro races with LA+0? |
| ArgulFraster07-22-07, 09:45 PM | I and a friend of mine are working on a "two sides of anthro" world-one side, mine, is Anthro Primary, with a smattering of the classic races, most of whom are immigrants from his side. His side is classic races dominant with a smattering of anthros. We just built the races from the ground up, with analogs to their classic counterparts-Canidians (Orcs), Felinians (Humans), Cavians(pacifistic Halflings with natural sonic attacks), Mousefolk (Furry Gnomes!), Lapinians (Bang-happy Half-Elves, sort of, with many variants), Bathyradans (They're squirrel people who have mixed druidisim with arcana to create plant-mages, sorta elf-like), and then there are the aquatic sealfolk and Otterkin. Sooner or later I'll post some of this stuff for browsing at your leisure. |
| Fireclave07-23-07, 03:12 AM | Sounds interesting. Looking forward to it. |
| Tytalus07-23-07, 04:16 AM | But what if you want anthro races with LA+0? Well, that's an entirely different problem that the one brought up by the OP. |
