| Vestrial11-17-07, 03:46 PM | Basically I'm making an arcane trickster type, and I'm looking for a good race or template (or both) to suit my purpose. This is for a rediculously powerful gestalt game, and the LA only applies to one side of the build, so I wont be losing any caster levels, but I'm trying to max out my SA dice as well. (and still fill the build with all the rediculousness that befits a gestalt build) I'd prefer a tiny pixie like race (Coure (sp?) from BoED is pretty good but it seems expensive at LA+5) thanks for any suggestions |
| Darth Sephiroth11-17-07, 05:15 PM | Only template I can think of is Spellstitched which grants spellcasting, but requires you to be undead. |
| DreamerInsane11-17-07, 06:04 PM | White Dragonspawn from Dragonlance Campaign setting. +2 DEX, +2 CON, flight, weak breath weapon, a level of sorcerer casting, +7 Natural Armour, LA +1 |
| HCL11-17-07, 07:06 PM | White Dragonspawn from Dragonlance Campaign setting. +2 DEX, +2 CON, flight, weak breath weapon, a level of sorcerer casting, +7 Natural Armour, LA +1 thats the most overpowered **** i have ever seen |
| DreamerInsane11-17-07, 07:32 PM | It'd be bearable if it didn't have the ridiculous armour bonus. |
| Amaranth11-17-07, 08:18 PM | I vote Dark Stalker from Fiend Folio! First off, 3d6 sneak attack, blindsight, a whole bunch of good ability adjustments, and +2 nat armor bonus on top of it all :) I think ability adjustments would be +4 str, +6 Dex, +2 Con, +4 Int, +4 Wis, +6 Cha 3HD and +5 LA.... might be too steep, but I think its what you want. Cheers! EDIT: I forgot Fog Cloud 2/day to abuse people without blindsight, and poison use. +8 racial hide, +4 racial MS. Downside: light sensitivity... Counter: Youre going arcane trickster type, take darkness spells |
| PhaedrusXY11-17-07, 08:22 PM | thats the most overpowered **** i have ever seenWell... there is the often overlooked part that says that you are enslaved by a white dragon. :P Sylphs from the Monster Manual 2 cast as a 7th level sorcerer, or something like that. I think they have 6 racial hit dice, and a +2 LA. The LA can be found in the Errata for that book. They're also Outsiders, which makes them great for Polymorph cheese. |
| Vestrial11-18-07, 01:24 AM | Sylph is pretty cool, I really like the idea of being a tiny fairie type.. ;) I cant find the errata to MM2 though, anyone know their LA? Dark stalker might be my best bet though, 3 SA for LA+5 is nice. Maybe a Dragonspawn Dark stalker! ;) As an aside, how do you figure out the stat bonuses for monsters to turn them into PCs? |
| Meep22211-18-07, 01:35 AM | As an aside, how do you figure out the stat bonuses for monsters to turn them into PCs? Take 10 off the top and round down to the nearest even, that's usually the easy way, unless they have high HD. |
| Vestrial11-18-07, 01:51 AM | Thanks, Meep, I thought it was something like that, but some of the races just seem off. ;) Do they get skill points, or do you just take the skills as listed? |
| calronmoonflower11-18-07, 01:57 AM | Take 10 off the top and round down to the nearest even, that's usually the easy way, unless they have high HD. Or you could add the elite array. |
| Vestrial11-18-07, 02:00 AM | Or you could add the elite array. Please explain. |
| DreamerInsane11-18-07, 05:51 AM | Well... there is the often overlooked part that says that you are enslaved by a white dragon. :P Not necessarily. Gellidus is dead, I think... |
| Vestrial11-18-07, 12:26 PM | I've no worries about RP restrictions anyway. This is pretty much an 'anything goes' game to see how rediculous the characters can be. Racial restrictions, aligment restrictions, all out the window. I'm just trying to find the most min/maxed race/template combo I can find. ;) |
| DreamerInsane11-18-07, 12:48 PM | Then white Dragonspawn is an absolutely perfect fit. May I suggest a Dark White Dragonspawn Whisper Gnome? |
| Vestrial11-18-07, 01:08 PM | What is the "Dark" part of that suggestion from? I was thinking about whisper gnome as well. ;) I apparently didnt know how LAs work, but I just read in the DNDwiki that you add the LA to the creatures hd to calculate the ECL. So the dark stalker is actually ecl 8, which is pretty expensive for his abilities. His little bro, the dark creeper is only ECL 4, however, which seems a darn good price. (Small, 2d6 SA, evasion, blindsight, good stats. And Shadow cloak, the rules for which I cant find anywhere. Anybody know what it does?) |
| DreamerInsane11-18-07, 02:07 PM | Dark is a template found in the Tome of Magic's Shadow Magic section, I think. Basically, it's lots of sneakyness at LA +1. Though I guess the worst is still the humble Venerable White Dragonspawn Dragonwrought Kobold. +3's to all mentals, no Con penalty, Epic Feats. Plus, Dragonspawn can just replace a sorcerer level. A Kobold Dragonspawn 1/Sorcerer 19 who has undergone the two Draconic Rites of Passage has a caster level of 21 and learsn spells on the same levels Wizards do. |
| calronmoonflower11-18-07, 02:28 PM | Please explain. The elite array is listed as a way to create more powerful monsters from the back of the Monster Manuel. The score -10 method is one way to get the racial adjustments to ability scores to create a monstrous PC, but just adding the elite array is an alternative. It's less work, but more limiting. |
| IdleAltruism11-18-07, 03:16 PM | There is the black ethergaunt from fiend folio, 16HD lvl 4 adjustment cast spells as a 17th level wizard(huge bonus to int as well as many other stats, +8 dex) Sprigans from the same book give S/A but they have 5 HD and a LA+2 with some nice bonuses to stats. The Arkamoi MMV has some nifty special abilities tied to casting as well as sorcerer progression 4HD(4 caster lvls) and LA +4. Rakshasa Naztharune MMIII has sneak attack and some serious bonuses as well 11HD LA+5 Regular rakshasa have spellcasting abilities 7HD(7 sorcerer CL) with a steep +7 LA. |
| Vestrial11-18-07, 03:32 PM | I'm torn: Black Sprite (Denizens of Dread): Tiny, 60ft fly (good), about +10 in total stat adjustments, 5 feats, spell resistence 16, and some irrelevant spells (and perma greater invis, which doesnt suck, but at 18 is all but useless) ECL4 Dark Creeper (Fiend Folio): Small, 30 ft move, about +14 in stat adjusts, one feat, 2d6 SA, and Shadow cloak (but I cant find out where it explains what that even is) ECL4 Whisper gnome: gnomishness goodness with an attitude. To all these I would apply the dark template from ToM (Or shadowborn, from a 3rd party book. Basically dark, + a couple nice abilities including making all attacks as melee touch attacks for up to rounds/hd per day. But it's LA+3) I really like the Sprite for style, and the fact that he's small. A permanent reduce and he's diminutive, which is really nice. The creeper is attractive because of the stat bonuses, and the 2d6 SA (although if I go gnome I can pick that up with class levels anyway). If I knew what shadow cloak did that might push me over to the creeper. As it stands, I'm leaning toward the Sprite just because it's more cool. ;) |
| Sinfire Titan11-18-07, 04:28 PM | Marrulurk, from Sandstorm. Sneak attack +2d6, a weak breath weapon, small size, and you gain Death attack, poison use, and an additional +4 racial bonus to Hide and MS on top of your size bonus to Hide. Plus, they have 3d8HD, a +1 LA, and positive modifiers to everything but Int. Can't go wrong with that! |
| The_Shaman11-18-07, 04:46 PM | Yeah, Marrulurk are just that damn good. Total ECL of 4, +2d6 sneak attack, charisma-based death attack (if you want to be a sorcerer-trickster) and modifiers that even if they already had an elite arrays make them sweet. Oh, and apart from what sinfire said, they also have all marrulurk traits, including something like minor fire resistance, immunity to desiccation, etc. |
| Vestrial11-18-07, 05:41 PM | and modifiers that even if they already had an elite arrays make them sweet This is the second mention of elite array and monster attributes, can you explain? I dont really get Calroon's explanation above... The Marrulurk is pretty much the same thing as the dark creeper, just swapping and shadow cloak (still hoping somebody can tell me wth that is lol), for death attack and stats. Id rather have evasion than the death attack, but the stats are really high. (If it is legit to just subtract 10 to figure the bonus) |
| calronmoonflower11-18-07, 09:11 PM | This is the second mention of elite array and monster attributes, can you explain? I dont really get Calroon's explanation above... Alright, then let me try again. Instead of doing the math to get the base ability adjustments and then stating up the ability scores, take the given ability scores in the entry and add the elite array. It's simpler, but prevents from moving the abilities around as much and as such is more restrictive in what you can do. |
| VulcanStormwrath11-18-07, 09:28 PM | On the high end. Rakhasa. |
| Darth Sephiroth11-19-07, 02:13 AM | How about a White Spawn Lesser Aasimar... LA+1, +2 to Dex, Con, Wis, & Cha...plus a bunch of crazy abilities scattered around. A nice DM may even let you swap your Sorcerer level for a level of Spellthief if you can convince him of it. |
| Jaxgaret11-19-07, 02:10 PM | Alright, then let me try again. Instead of doing the math to get the base ability adjustments and then stating up the ability scores, take the given ability scores in the entry and add the elite array. It's simpler, but prevents from moving the abilities around as much and as such is more restrictive in what you can do. Could you possibly give an example? This explanation is still very unclear. |
| calronmoonflower11-19-07, 02:44 PM | Could you possibly give an example? This explanation is still very unclear. :banghead: Starting scores Str 21, Dex 8, Con 17, Int 4, Wis 11, Cha 11 The elite array is +4, +4, +2, +2, +0 So the score end with. Str 25, Dex 10, Con 21, Int 4, Wis 11, Cha 11 |
| IdleAltruism11-19-07, 03:42 PM | The elite array is the standard stats they used for all NPCs. It is based off 25 point buy and can be found on page 169 in the DMG. The actual elite array is 15 14 13 12 10 8(note these stats don't have to be in any particular order) Standard base stats for all monsters are 11 11 11 10 10 10(based on 15 point buy) To figure out the stat adjustment for non-NPC monsters look at the standard monster(not the NPC they give as an example) and subtract 10 to every even stat and 11 from every odd stat. For example a monster has the following abilities 21 str 15 dex 14 con 9 int 12 wis 10 cha The creatures ability modifiers would be +10 str +4 dex +4 con -2 int(9-11=-2) +2 wis +0 cha. Remember all stat modifiers are always even(only a few strange templates that I'm aware of don't follow this rule, I believe one is warbeast). For every monster this is the general rule. I hope thats what you're looking for. |
| Vestrial11-19-07, 05:04 PM | Thanks, Idle, that's a bit more clear. ;) |
| Bopple11-19-07, 08:47 PM | AFAIK, sylph's LA is +5. |
| Grizzled Gryphon11-19-07, 09:32 PM | Here is something to consider. You said it is a overpowered gestalt game anyway, so take a look at the Petal from MMIII. This might be exactly what you are looking for. |
| Vestrial11-20-07, 04:09 AM | Thanks for the suggestion, GG. Petal definitely seems like the most bang for your LA buck. ;) |
| Grizzled Gryphon11-20-07, 09:22 PM | Especially if you are doing any spellcasting based on Cha. They get a +12 to cha, IIRC. I am AFB right now.:weep: |
| Empirate11-24-07, 06:53 AM | Ultimate Sneakster: Might I recommend Shadar-Kai (Fiend Folio)? A 3HD Fey with +1 LA, for ECL5 as a first level character (Shadar-Kai Rogue1, for example). Shadar-Kai gain +1d6 SA, EWP (spiked chain) as a bonus feat, superior low-light vision, +10 to Hide in non-bright conditions, +6 Dex +2 Con -2 Cha, Hide in Plain Sight. Oh, and a rather unpleasant, but thematically very cool, shadow curse... Slap on Dark (Tome of Magic), Shadow Walker (Unapproachable East), Shade (FRCS) and Shadow Creature (Manual of the Planes) for a character that can basically turn greater invisible at will (through ridiculous, unbeatable Hide checks), make its own darkness and gain massive bonuses in it, and gain a bunch of shadow-themed SLAs. Be sure to pick up Uncanny Dodge ASAP, or your Dex-based AC will drop 10 points or more when you happen to roll a 1 on initiative. Which will be the only time you're not going first, anyway... |
| Darth Sephiroth11-25-07, 06:53 PM | Whitespawn Marrulurk gives a lot of bang for its buck since you're going for the Arcane Trickster type 3 HD and 2 LA in total with a level of casting, 2d6 Sneak Attack, Poison Use, Flightspeed, Dragon type, and more. |
| Grizzled Gryphon11-26-07, 05:19 PM | Whitespawn Marrulurk gives a lot of bang for its buck since you're going for the Arcane Trickster type 3 HD and 2 LA in total with a level of casting, 2d6 Sneak Attack, Poison Use, Flightspeed, Dragon type, and more. A Marrulurk (a desert critter) as a slave to a White Dragon (an artic critter). That would be one miserable Marruspawn... |
| Darth Sephiroth12-03-07, 06:42 PM | A Marrulurk (a desert critter) as a slave to a White Dragon (an artic critter). That would be one miserable Marruspawn... Depends upon the setup for it, if draconic aging comes into play the thing could easily be from before the Marru's domain became a desert, or you could go with the fact that several places that are technically deserts but are freezing. Of course it could be that the White Dragon rules the area at night and a Bronze during the day. |
