| DemonMonkeyBoy04-03-07, 12:19 AM | Hi I'm play an aqutic elf druid 6 in a Water World based game. I have a few questions. Breathing: Gills: Aquatic elves can survive out of the water for 1 hour per point of Constitution (after that, refer to the suffocation rules). What do I have to do to reset the clock? I'm guessing I need to submerge my self in water, but for how long? Is there a spell that could reset it? Being a druid if I shape change, do you think that could reset it? I think it could since I heal as if rested for 8 hours. Casting Spells: When under water can I cast spells? I don't see anything about this in the DMG. Since I have gills and the aqutic sudtype does that make a differents. Animal Compaion: Any suggestions here would be nice. Something that can go both on land and in the water. Any other suggestion or things I should be concerned with please let me know. Thanks, DMB |

Create water (and a bucket) comes to mind. Ideally you would want to get to a natural body of water. You would only need to keep you gills wet to be able to process air, but common sense indicates that this would likely be uncomfortable Being a druid if I shape change, do you think that could reset it? I think it could since I heal as if rested for 8 hours. Only if you shapechange into something with lungs, bear in mind that if this character has a CON scor of at least 8 than he is capable of resting for a full 8 hours out of water, but that's not going to leave him in the best shape Casting Spells: When under water can I cast spells? I don't see anything about this in the DMG. Since I have gills and the aqutic sudtype does that make a differents. I would think that most spellcasters would be capable of casting in their natural environment. Animal Compaion: Any suggestions here would be nice. | Thomar_of_Uointer04-03-07, 12:54 AM | Just taking a breath should suffice, though as a DM I would say you're going to need to find running water or a very large bucket. It's up to the DM. Casting spells underwater suffers no penalty, even for air-breathers (though you need to make a DC 20 Spellcraft check to cast a spell with the Fire descriptor, and the surface of a body of water blocks line of effect for a fire spell). http://www.d20srd.org/srd/wilderness.htm#aquaticTerrain Aquatic rangers can get a manta ray, porpoise, Medium shark, or squid. I'd say manta ray, it's Large and strong, making it a good pack mule, but if you want a combat mount go for the shark. Remember that nonpiercing weapons have problems underwater, try a longspear (tridents are nice too if you're doing martial) and crossbow. Oh, and shapechanging doesn't modify your extraordinary special qualities, you can't use it to get air. Well, by the RAW at least... |
| celestialkin04-03-07, 01:32 AM | I've been wondering, is it possible to become able to breath both air and water permanently? |
| DemonMonkeyBoy04-03-07, 01:50 AM | That's I good question, I'm sure you can with a magic Item. Thanks for the reply so far. Any other suggestions are welcome. |
| DemonMonkeyBoy04-03-07, 02:06 AM | Thomar_of_Uointer Brings up an interesting question. The way it looks is I can't use my wild shape to reset the clock, because I keep my special quilities,(gills). So if I change into a bear I can breath under water. Now how silly is that! |
| MightyPotamus04-03-07, 02:14 AM | Oh, and shapechanging doesn't modify your extraordinary special qualities, you can't use it to get air. Well, by the RAW at least... I don't see how breathing air is that extraordinary of a special quality, Ive been doing it for decades with no special training. That would be like saying that the druid would not get the teeth of a bear or claws of a tiger. Would a druid wildshaped to a hawk still have to walk? |
| runestar04-03-07, 02:31 AM | Note that according to races of faerun, aquatic elves must breathe in salt water. While they can survive in fresh water, the process leaves them fatigued. So unless there is a spell called "create salty water"...:P You can cast spells as per normal underwater. |
| MightyPotamus04-03-07, 09:29 AM | Salt is only 5gp per pound. |

That would be like saying that the druid would not get the teeth of a bear or claws of a tiger. Would a druid wildshaped to a hawk still have to walk? No, they get limited movement rates and special attacks, but not special qualities. |
| MightyPotamus04-03-07, 05:14 PM | No, they get limited movement rates and special attacks, but not special qualities. No, they don't get extraordinary special qualities. Nowhere in the MM do I see "air breathing (ex)" listed in any creature descriptions, nor do I see "water breathing (ex)" listed for creatures that obviously do (sharks, squid, kraken) Certain lunged creatures that are well adapted to aquatic life or aquatic creatures that are well adapted to terrestrial life make use of extraordinary abilities such as "hold breath (ex)" (whales, corcodiles, etc.), "amphibious (ex)" (nixies, etc.), or even "water breathing (ex)" but these are the exception, not the rule. |
| tetebetson04-03-07, 08:03 PM | Land walker feat makes it 3 hours /point of con Rapid Swim feat gives u +20 ft to your swim speed which makes it 60 ft straight away You might be better off withh a half Sea Elf to be fair if your going to be on land most of the time, you still get the gubbins for swiming and you can probaly breathe under water for about 1/2 an hour Also no +/- to stats which is good and often overlooked. Anphibious race , Aventi , might be an option All of the above info can be found in [Stormwrack] |
| celestialkin04-03-07, 11:11 PM | Well, you could also try gaining the ability to breathe air as well as water by going through a minor ritual from Savage Species. |
| vagabonvoid04-03-07, 11:52 PM | If you have access to Unearthed Arcana, you could use the aquatic elf subtype. It specifically states they have no gills... I guess this means their amphibious... |
| DemonMonkeyBoy04-04-07, 02:00 AM | Where do you find the land walker feat? All great suggestion keep them coming!!! |
| Kouk04-04-07, 02:45 AM | Where do you find the land walker feat? All great suggestion keep them coming!!! Stormwrack, Mastering the Perils of Wind and Wave It is the environment book focused on oceans and coasts. I would find it very hard to make a waterworld without this book. Stormwrack deals with undersea life, fleshing out the environment and adding new monsters like the simple giant crab and jellyfish swarms. It also has information for making sea creatures able to go on land and vice versa. Some class options, new spells and domains, feats, a few alternate PC races, and perhaps most relevant to a waterworld it has information about boats and naval combat. According to Stormwrack, Aquatic Elf gills are below their ears, so I guess if you could dunk yourself into water up to your shoulders you should be OK. The book also expands Aquatic Elves to automatically have proficiency with the net, spear, trident and aquatic crossbow instead of the normal elf sword suite. It also has several feats, weapons and armor related to the ocean. One of the best underwater feats I think, is Sahuagin Flip which lets you attack as a standard action and then withdraw as a move action. If you are going to be having a full campaign in a mostly aquatic or coastal world, I would suggest you get together with your DM and look into getting this book. |
| DemonMonkeyBoy04-04-07, 02:54 PM | Total forgot about that book. I'll have to look in to it. Thanks |
