LordOfWolves 06-19-07, 02:38 PM	Hi, I've been working on a Satyr character that I'm really happy with but when I went to stat it out, I realised that it has five racial HD :eek: This is far too much, especially with the +2 LA. So, would the Satyr be too powerful with no racial HD and just the LA? If so, what can i do to balance it a little? Thanks Guys (and Gals).
RobbyPants 06-19-07, 02:41 PM	Remember that RHD are a balancing factor for the LA of a race. Obviously, RHD are weaker than class levels. This means that the LA is calculated lower than necessary, as extra class levels are lost to the RHD. I doubt there is any "balanced" way to remove RHD that works for every race. Just as a starting point, you might be able to remove RHD by adding half their value (round up) to the LA. This probably seems steep, but it seems that it's WotC's intent to discourage people from playing non-standard races! ;) Edit: I took the time to read them in the SRD. They get (among other things) +2 to five ability scores, +4 Natural armor, +10 speed, and damage reduction. Plus they get at-will use of three spell-like abilities with their pipes. I would definitely say this is way too strong for a meer LA +2 (with no RHD). Going on the advice posted above, that would set it at LA +5 (with no RHD as well). Just by eye-balling the race, I'd say a flat +4 would probably be sufficient if you dropped the RHD. Although, to be honest, getting some extra HP that low levels would be nice. :)

Of course. I'd talk to the DM first, though. If you drop the parts that won't matter much, and keep the ones that will, it's not really loweing the ELC, after all. Also, like I said, without RHD, this might be a decent LA +4. You'd at least get in 11 class levels. But to be honest, if you're not willing to give up class levels, it's best to play something with a very low, if no LA. What class are you playing?

RobbyPants 06-19-07, 04:54 PM	Well, I don't know that I'd want to sacrifice class levels in that case. If you were playing a fighter-type, it might seem more reasonalble... In the end, it's really up to you. As for the DR, I don't know that it's that big of a deal. If you're all ECL 15, ignoring 5 points of physical damage from a non-cold iron source isn't that great. Things are going to be hitting you guys for 40 damage (or a lot more) easily.
Taureus_Drakken 06-20-07, 01:03 AM	Since you are looking at Bard, why not go for something that will primarily boost Cha, like the Half-Fey template from FF. I believe it's LA +4 or +3...and it nets you a lot of good "bardic" abilities. (if you are interested in domination of course) You could also look at either the Lumi or Domovoi, MM3 and Frostburn, respectively. Both of them grant a nice bonus to Cha, both in a 2 RHD LA+2 package.
LordOfWolves 06-20-07, 07:31 AM	I don't think I'm going to make this work so I've been working on a new race. A type of feytouched: the Satyrkin. Half-satyrs basically. For the idea I'm working on to work, the character has to be a Satyr or of Satyr descent. I'll post it in a new thread when I get the details worked out. Thanks
