Are there and good (not evil) Large races of low LA? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-04-07, 09:44 AM The only Large race that I can find with a lower Level Adjustment is the Half-Ogre (+2 LA). The only good races that I can find are like the Lillend that have an obcene total level. What else is there? It would also be nice to find one with a Strength bonus as I'm building a melee fighter.

I'm trying to make a War Hulk that my DM will allow near civilization. Powerful Build is great but you can't qualify for the class with it. Thanks.

04-04-07, 10:54 AM Of course, you can be a good Ogre.

However, if you want a classic good guy, (core) there is only the centaur, classless ECL 6 but quite okay, considering that the 4 racial HD are monsterous humanoid.

Minotaurs are also LA+2 with 6HD of Monstrous Humanoid that aren't too bad (full bab, good will and ref, listen and spot as racial skills, etc).

They are "usually chaotic evil" which means exceptions aren't uncommon.

04-04-07, 12:03 PM Werebear is great but the Total level is just too high. All I need is Large Size and a little Strength bonus. With were-creatures you also get the HD of the animal. for the brown bear that is 6 plus the +3(or +4) LA of the creature. Thats up to level 10 before I can take a Class. Minotaur is good for the bonuses but I still have the problem of walking into town. MIght as well still be an ogre.

Misunderstood and mistrusted? Perhaps. But surely not evil by nature and no more so mistrusted than a large, brutish half orc.

1. Maug (Fiend Folio): large sized (intelligent) constructs with ECL 5 (2HD, LA+3) with alignment of "usually lawful neutral"

2. Marrusault: large sized monstrous humanoids with ECL 8 (6HD, LA+2) with alignment of "usually neutral"

04-04-07, 01:50 PM Maug looks to be about the best I can expect. Thanks a million! Its strange that the forces of good are so short on large creatures. I guess I will have to be satisfied with a 'usually neutral'. That will keep me from having to clobber any gnomes, halflings and rangers I meet.

Of course, it might not fit into your world however.

Actually it is pretty steep. 4 Racial hit dice plus a LA of 4. Still itsa pretty tough monster with +10 to Str and Con. The Penalties are heavy though. If it were stats alone, I'd be better off with Half Ogre + Half Dragon. +14 to Str, +8 Nat AC and misc. other stuff for a total LA of +5. Problem is, what good dragon would mate with a half ogre?

04-04-07, 05:12 PM How about Centaur? 4HD, LA+2, quite decent imo. The only problem is that it doesn't have reach. IT would be interesting to take the Half-dragon monster progression levels, if you dare... the LA becomes very hard, but the build has the potential for some serious power.

But if you want an actual large sized race, then your best bet is a half-ogre raised by his human relatives.

04-04-07, 06:48 PM If all else fails just make your own race. or take the jotundheim (not sure if thats how you spell it) feat that makes you one size larger.
