| JulesCARV03-02-07, 08:24 PM | If I'm duplicating previous material, then link me or refer me to it. I realize that this is too well-known a concept for my ideas to be completely unprecedented, but I couldn't really find anything, so meh. "Alas, it is true that I am a wicked and depraved creature! Yet are not my sins the sins of a man, and are not such depravities as I have committed that go beyond the pale of our common humanity an effect of the bestial and insensitive manner in which I was brought into this life?" -- a nameless assembled to his creator Harthin Grilt, shortly before slaying him and taking his own life. Assembled are beings created from preserved dead flesh, primarily humanoid and animal, yet they are not undead. They are brought into true life by experimental, eccentric alchemists, wizards, egoists, or clerics, primarily of necromancy or healing gods. Assembled are usually built larger than most people, since managing the fine intricacies of the placement of organs, nerves, and blood vessels is easier to achieve and has a larger margin of error in a larger creature. Numerous scars can be seen throughout their mismatched bodies. For the first few weeks of their existence, assembled frequently give off a faint, acrid alchemical smell, as a result of the residual embalming substances used to preserve their flesh until they could be brought to true life which were not flushed out by the creator immediately prior to bieng brought to life. If an assembled regularly cleans himself, doesn't spend much time in alchemical laboratories, and eats a normal diet, he will usual stop giving off any such odor within a month, as the body purges itself of such substances. (and alchemical substances which can't be purged are left within the body where they give off no external odor) Assembled innately have the same varied, uncertain ethical outlook as humans, but having never been through the process of childhood and acculturation, and being brought suddenly, as adults, into a world that frequently rejects them, with no guidance or possibly with the guidance of a creator who is not mentally healthy himself, they are frequently chaotic evil. However, assembled who are not chaotic evil, either owing to a gentler, more humane introduction into the world or an innate benevolence of nature, are not uncommon, at least to the extent that assembled of any sort can be considered anything other than "uncommon." In fact, because they are not taught to accept some aspects of evil that normal people learn to accept as children, they sometimes have an easier time rejecting commonplace, socially acceptable evils than most people (such as, for instance, socially acceptable enslavement of goblins, cruelty to animals, bondage of elementals in magical devices, etc). Assembled barbarians are common, since they must frequently teach themselves how to fight and survive without formal training, but assembled can be suitable members of any class, and sometimes their creators take them on as apprentices. *+2 strength, +2 constitution, -2 charisma: assembled are built to a larger scale, are strong and tough as a result, but they are generally poorly socialized, having never experienced childhood, and their scarred, mismatched appearance does nothing to aid their interactions with others. *Monstrous humanoid type *Medium size *Base land speed of 30 feet. *Powerful build: functions as one size category larger for some purposes. *Survivor: +1 racial bonus to fortitude saves, +2 racial bonus to survival checks *Favored class: any *Level adjustment: +1 Any thoughts on how someone might create such a being? I'd like it to involve a mix of magic, alchemy, and fleshcraft. It might involve necromancy (like have a spell prerequisite of "false life" from a wizard or sorcerer), but they're not undead or constructs like flesh golems. |
| AMGriffin03-02-07, 09:47 PM | I'd give 'em NA +1 and electricity resistance, seems fairly balanced after that. Ice the +1 to fortitude saves too, it's redundant. |
| Kerazugnal03-03-07, 02:24 AM | I say remove the fort save, and up one of the state scores if you can justify it. Electricity still makes the undead twitch and wreaks just about as much havoc on them (provided, they have much less of a nervous system to fry, but from what you make it sound like, they have vitals that will do just as well.) Besides, whats Frankenstein's monster if he isn't abnormally strong or tough? On that matter, you could make em resistant to pain effects (few as they are, it would make good flavor, and makes a lot of sense.) Luck to you on your building! |
| AMGriffin03-03-07, 04:05 PM | ACtually yeah, I'd consider bumping the STR bonus to +4, and maybe just large size in general, the monster is like 8 feet tall. |
| InkBlot03-03-07, 04:46 PM | Shouldn't this be a template? What if a mad-psionicist brought to life the stitched together peices of several well preserved dog corpses as practice? |
| jaw4ever03-03-07, 08:11 PM | This race also sounds like it could more fined as a living construct, ala warforged from Eberron. |
| JulesCARV03-04-07, 12:05 PM | Hmm... I think maybe constitution +4 would work. If size were increased to large, would that merit a larger level adjustment? |
| dragonseth03-04-07, 05:20 PM | Wouldn't Flesh Golem work? That's how I've always thought of Frankenstein's monster. Edit: Read the bottom, said you don't want Flesh Golem. Nevermind. |
| AMGriffin03-04-07, 05:24 PM | Just giving it large size would actually make it weaker in a way. Even if it gets a longer reach it's still going to suffer -4 penalties on hide checks, and -1 hit to AC and attack rolls. ...Also does anybody know if powerful build increases your lifting and carrying limits by one category? Bumping constitution to +4 however... +4 Str, +4 Con, -2 Cha Large 30 feet base land speed +1 on fortitude saves and +2 bonus on survival checks. I'd say it's just marginally too powerful. If you gave it natural armor or damage reduction (something like that) it could pass for a balanced LA+2 character. |
| JulesCARV05-21-07, 03:24 PM | Hmm, been a while since I've looked at this thread: Maybe: -Large Size -Monstrous Humanoid Type -+4 strength, +4 constitution, -2 charisma -40 foot base land speed -+2 natural armor bonus -Level adjustment: +2 |
