The half-ogre from 3.0 savage species seems a bit unbalanced to me so I designed this for one of my players. I'd like to see what you all think. I based it on the half-giant from the expanded psionics handbook:

+1 Level Adjustment
+2 Str, +2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha
+1 Natural Armor
Darkvision
Powerful Build
Land Speed 30
Medium Size
Giant Subtype
Favored Class: Barbarian
Starting Languages: Common, Giant

There is an updated version of the Half-Ogre in RoD that has an LA of +2.

That seems fine. It might even be a little light for a +1 LA, but comparable with a Half Giant.

I'd allow it if one of my players wanted to play one, and might even give a low power bonus feat like Endurance, Skill Focus: Intimidate or Craft Magic Pie.

Thanks for the input so far. I was thinking about giving the race +2 intimidate as a racial bonus.

Also, Jaxgaret, I am not familiar with all the book appreviations. What is RoD?

Whoa. How is being part ogre only going to get you a +2 to strength?

Ogres have +10 for god's sake.

The half-ogre in RoD is balanced anyway ( even if it lacks human traits).

I have a human dominant half-ogre that I use that looks as such:

•+4 Str, +2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha
• Medium Size
• 30 feet base land speed
• Darkvision out to 30 feet
• +1 Natural armor
• For all effects related to race this half-ogre is considered human.
• 4 extra skillpoints per level and one extra skill point per level.
• Automatic languages: Common, Giant Bonus languages: Any
• Favored class: Any.
• LA+1

Your half ogre doesn't have Powerful Build though. Have you seen this class feature? Among other things, it lets you use weapons and such as if you are one size larger. So a greatsword in one hand or a Large greatsword (3d6) in both. That's where the massive damage comes from. I think they introduced powerful build in Expanded Psionic Handbook with the Half-Giant.

I know what powerful build is.

I'm just saying that with or without powerful build I'd think a half-ogre would have a STR bonus higher then +2.

+1 Level Adjustment
+2 Str, +2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha
+1 Natural Armor
Darkvision>>>>>60'
Powerful Build
Land Speed 30
Medium Size
Giant Subtype
Favored Class: Barbarian
Starting Languages: Common, GiantThis is almost the exact half-ogre I use in my campaign.

They don't have natural armor in my campaign. They instead have a campaign specific ability which allows some (mostly PCs) to pass as humans which really only makes a considerable difference in my campaign world.

As far as Str, I explain it in that the human strain is stronger than the ogre strain for physical ability scores since they are medium size. Obviously Powerful Build helps bring out the ogre strain w/o requiring an ability score in excess of +2 for a PC race.

In my opinion, your variant half-ogre is balanced at +1 LA.

Yeah. It is balanced.

I offer three half-ogre variants for my campaigns.

The one human dominant one I posted here.

The ogre dominant one (which is seen in the RoD book)

and a half-ogre that combines aspects of both parent races (It's basically the half-ogre I posted here with powerful build and an additional point of NA, both human and giant blood traits, and with the LA boosted to +2.

unfortunatly, powerful build doesn't let you weild a two-handed weapon in one hand. it just lets your treat a weapon sized for one bigger. you can use a huge greatsword in two hands but not a large greatswords in one hand.
but otherwise it's good. if this puts so much of a dampener on your template, then i suggest the official one in Rces of Destiny too. it's not too bad if you look at it.
