Best 0 LA race for a cleric? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-04-07, 08:45 AM Any thoughts? Need to have an ECL 9 cleric that can actually cast the 5th level spells, so no LA can apply. Preferrably something with either a Wis or CHA bonus, both would be best, but I can't think of anything!

I don't have the books with me, but IIRC, you can bump your wisdom that way.

yeah? but what does it say about your character if he if 80 y.o. and is still 1st level? do not forget that for every +1 to cha,wiz,int there is a -1 to the rest for every age category. generally at low levels you do not want a penalty to canstitution.

a good race is raptorian. they even gave favored class: Cleric.
Human is good too, since there are a ton of good feats that greatly augment a cleric.

05-04-07, 01:54 PM There's also an extremely odd race from Dragon #315- the Tortle. Basically, it's a humanoid tortoise. I have NO idea why they thought that was a good idea, but it's got 0 LA and racial stats:

+2 Con
+2 Wis
-2 Dex
-2 Cha

Favored Class: Cleric
Medium Size
Movement 20' Swim 10' (+8 racial bonus on Swim checks to do something special/avoid a hazard, can always take 10, can run if you swim in a straight line)
Humanoid (tortle)
Low-Light Vision
+3 Natural Armor

Reasonable stats for a 0 LA, although it's REALLY odd and from Dragon Magazine (I.E., DM may disallow it).

But yes, the best race for a cleric is the lesser aasimar, although it's too good for its LA. Take it as you will. A dragonborn, Dragonwrought kobold (Races of the Dragon) can be an excellent cleric race depending on your build. Its -4 Str and Small size cripples it in melee unless you're really creative, though.

05-04-07, 09:23 PM A lesser Aasimar is indeed the best race for a cleric at LA+0, you could also add the dragonborn template for +2 Con/-2 Dex if you plan on wearing heavy armor. The result is one broken race.

In the PHB Humans and dwarves are ideal choices obviously. Half-orcs also aren't that bad at being clerics either surprisingly enough.

05-06-07, 06:18 AM So if you are a lesser Aasimar, you have to choose your native plane, that way if smn banishes you there is a place to which you go...?
