| CrashtheStyx03-29-07, 04:17 AM | Out of the three Draconic Aspects available to new Dragonborn characters in Races of the Dragon, which do you think is the most powerful? Heart - Breath weapon, 1d8 dmg per each 3 HD. 5 ft per HD, line of either acid, cold, electricity, or fire to the characters choosing, Reflex save (DC 10+1/2 HD+con mod), cooldown 1d4 rounds. Mind - Immune to paralysis and magic sleep, and continually gains improved darkvision and lowlight vision every 3 HD, ending with blindsense 30 ft, 120ft darkvision, and 4x distance of human low light at 15HD. Wings - You get wings. +10 to jump, and can use to glide. 6HD or more can fly at a speed of 30 ft/average manuverability, but with no medium or heavy loads only for as many rounds as your Con mod. At 12 HD you can fly without tiring, and you can make a dive attack. I would think the breath weapon would be great, especially where you would qualify for breath weapon feats from draconomicon and whatnot...but is the damage too little? Is darkvision and all that comes with "mind" THAT great? And would having wings with such restrictions be worth it at all (taking into consideration that if flying was so important to you, you could get a flying mount easily by 15th level...). Just curious as to what your opinions are. |
| Neutronium_Dragon03-29-07, 04:21 AM | Mind is probably the most useful since the benefits are helpful all the way through. The breath weapon is too low damage to be much use. (You could spend a whack of feats to improve it, true - but those are feats not spent on other useful things.) Flight is nice, but by the time you get it, flight is pretty readily available anyway. That said, if you're heavily into the Tiger Claw discipline from the Tome of Battle, the Jump bonus would be rather nice... |
| kyros_the_spawnslayer03-29-07, 10:16 AM | well if you work it just right you can technically have all three aspects and here is how ya do it, but it is feat intensive. When your character becomes a dragonborn choose one of the aspects ( though I prefer to start with heart). It also states that you can choose a switch out one of your feats in order to gain one that only a 1st lvl charcter could get. Since you are dragonblood now you just switch out a feat for Dragon Wings, and later on spend a few feats to gain stronger ones. Later on you can gain Dragon Senses (from Dragon Magic) to essentially gain the mind aspect, though you would have to either start out as a sorcerer, some class that grants you dragontouched, or have to take the feat. |
| obrysii03-29-07, 10:34 AM | The flight's pretty useful, too. Nonmagical flight is always fantastic. |
| feraltibbit03-29-07, 12:09 PM | Hmmmm.... Though all 3 R great, I'd say heart. Why? Because there's always some creature that is immune to some type of element. Use this guy to find out which. Besides, a good breath weapons always comes N handy when U have NO weapons 4 some reason. |
| Xaktsaroth03-29-07, 04:47 PM | Heart. Because spitting out a maximized, empowered cone of fire is a great opening move to soften up enemies. Edit: Oh, if your just looking for Ex flight and the Heart trait for no LA or feat investment. Be a Dragonborn Raptoran. The Dragonborn template clearly states that movement modes are re-tained(like your wings, for flight. :P). |
| MightyPotamus03-29-07, 05:47 PM | I Would also go with wings, but that's probably because I just lost an awesome Warmage to an 80' fall; that still smarts. |
| Darth Sephiroth03-29-07, 07:19 PM | A Dragonborn Raptoran sounds like fun, basically means you gain one of the aspects for free and the others can be gained as well |
| orien4504-01-08, 02:44 AM | I vote for all 3, I plan on getting them all :D . On rebirth I take the Heart aspect, and cash in one feat to get Dragon Wings. After that I work my way to Disciple of the Eye and get all of the abilities of the mind aspect (minus sleep and para immunity) by 5th level in that class and take Improved Wings as a feat along the way. Now I have all of the abilities of all 3 aspects, with the exception of sleep and paralysis immunity. |
| Spikes01k04-01-08, 08:13 PM | Flight! Get DIVE ATTACK!!! It is incredable, it works with any peircing weapon. Combine that with power attack and combat brut, and Bam! |
| Kelb_Havoc04-06-08, 02:36 AM | I like the heart aspect. Its damage is on-par with sneak attack or eldritch blast, and with the metabreath feats from draconomicon you can get some sweet affects. I love saying to my DM "I create a 15ft radius sphere of x-element here!, and I make it stay for 6 rounds" Then I can grapple an enemy and drag him in for half my breath weapon's damage for most of the fight :P |
