Best Dwarf Sub-Race? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-22-07, 12:12 AM What do you think is the best dwarf subrace, I think its the Duergar, i mean for only +1 LA they get Expansion, Invisibility, ability to take psionic feats, and they are bald:P what do you guys think is hte best dwarven subrace?

02-22-07, 08:56 AM The normal dwarf (Shield). -2 CHA doesn't hits to many classes. for those which depends of CHA (paladin, Cleric, Sorcerer, Bard, and the list goes on), Gold Dwarves do the job, except for Rogues and Beguilers, of course.

+1 LA hurts spellcasters/psionics/manifestators/initiators, so it's a no-no.

02-22-07, 09:45 AM Deep Dwarf. +3 to saves vs. spells/SLAs and poison, as well as 90' darkvision at the cost of light sensitivity.

That or the Earth Dwarf, although that means giving up your save bonuses...

02-22-07, 02:06 PM My personal favorite is the Gold Dwarf. Prefering to play a cleric or paladin, the Gold Dwarf makes more sense, and if you can survive into the mid to hi levels, their racial attack bonuses make more sense.

That being said, the Deep Dwarf variant from Monster Manual, as pointed out by Finfreeze, is very potent, and if given the option (neither of my DM's would really allow it) I'd probably even pick that over my beloved Gold Dwarf.

If LA was no issue, I'd go with the Urdinnur, though. Their at-will special abilities are very hard core, and hard not to like. Unfortunately their LA is astronomical, and virtually unplayable, really, till the mid-late part of the game.

Best dwarf race for heavy casting: Definetly Gold dwarf, a -2 to dex is noting in the long run but bonus constitution and no negative mental stats really pays of in the long run
