Doesn't have to be a PHB race, I wouldn't mind using a MM race.:)

gnome.

Yes, I'm serious.

Barring that, goliath then human then wood elf then dwarf then half-orc. Feral template (savage species) helps a lot.

After that I'd look into wookie.

Top non too wacky barbarian race by rank from best to worst in the top 5:
1-Dwarf, Human (always good even in the long run)
2-Neandertal (Frostburn)
3-Goliath (Races of Stone)
4- Pure Orc
5-Wood Elf

Other good choices if you're willing to pay the ECL (not us good as the previous top 5 but good)

1-Minotaur (MM)
2-Centaur(MM)
3-DragonKin (Draconomicon)
4-Ogre
5-Hill Giant, Frost giant or Fire Giant

Their stats prove my point without further need to explain...

Second the Warforged.
Human.
Dwarf.
Orc.
Half-orc.
I always thought that the Hobgoblin would make a pretty darn good barb.

If you can afford the LA, you'd definitely benefit from being feral.

The increasing fast healing and natural armor give you that much staying power, and if you pick a large race, the claw attacks and grapple bonuses can be devastating.

Hmm... aside from the above, Kokoruboru (OA dwarfl-lite), Draconic creature (quite nice +1 template), Dragonborn template (works well on wood elves, among others), Neraphim (good for lion totem barbs) and bariaur. The last two are in Manual of the Planes, btw. Half-minotaur and Half-ogre are great too, of course.

half dragon: SOOO worth it:
for LA +3 you get +4 AC, +8 STR (=+6 damage, +4 attack), +2 CON, immunity to 1 element, and a few other gooddies ...
(note that +8 str is what barbarians only get at level 20 ...)

Dragonborn with Mongrelfolk as the base race. +6 con with no level adjustment?

Yes please.

If u were to pick the normal game races allowed. It'd be...
1.) Half-orc = +2 to Str. Plus the only things you'll have to worry is survival. U mostly don't need the -2 int and the -2 wisdom and charisma for a barbarian./Darkvision is also good for a barbarian.
2.) Human = They're the best of all races anyway. But orcs still get them even in the long run if u concentrate mostly on STR.
3.) Elf = I kinda like them coz they're accustomed to the wilds.
4.) Halfling = Well, I don't think there's anything else.
5.) Dwarf = I really don't like this since there are lots of dwarf feats that cannot be used when u r a barbarian. Plus they suffer a huge penalty in jump.

Elves are terrible as Barbarians: -2 to CON?
Dwarves, on the other hand, are quite decent: Slow speed gets offset by the Barbarian while a +2 CON is worth it. Also, their saving throw boni are nothing to sneeze at.

UH? NO!! the rules are quite clear that dwarves suffer no penalty on jump checks

The only mouvement penalties dwarves suffer is their natural 20 ft speed (wich is'nt a penalty anyway if you wear heavy armor) and is off set by barbarian fast mouvement

And their racial feats almost all combat feats like armor optimization, Titan fighting, etc wich clearly work even in rage since that's the point

Where did you get such a thorougly false idea that is clearly completely invalid from the stand point of the rules (and logic for that matter)

Dwarves ares statistically the best barbarian race out there along with human, that's not even a question.

Second warforged as another excellent choice however...

Warforged is pretty good, as is dwarf, but I second the recommendation for half-dragon. Half-dragon is a pleasin' pleasin' template, even if the highest bonus is in Strength. Actually, make that "especially." Slap that on top of a dwarf, orc, or, if you can come up with an amusing and horrifying background story, warforged, and you're set.

I second the dragonborn mongrelfolk, with the aspect of wings for the +10 bonus on Jump checks (Leap Attack, anyone?). The +6 Constitution is just too good to pass up, for the 3 extra rounds of raging and the 3/level extra HP. That armor is so much more expensive for a winged creature is not really a problem, because with a Con score of 28 while raging at first level, you won't be relying on armor to survive.

I also like the flavor of it, because a mongrelfolk, as written in the background text in Races of Destiny, would be a racial identity I can imagine someone wanting to give up. The call to serve a benevolent draconic god and lose that poor image in the process could be very alluring to a mongrelfolk, I'd wager.

Folks,

Why the negativity on elves?

Wood elves have high strength and no charisma penalty which half-orcs have. Wild elves get the dexterity bonus, which makes them excellent skirmishers or archers (especially with shot on the run). Both get useful bonuses to spot and listen and the +2 racial bonus against enchantment is might useful.
Garden_State_Gamer

08-28-07, 01:40 PM
Warforged, hands down. You cannot beat the "no fatigue" and he gets a bonus to con.

My second choice: Goliath with a large great hammer.

Third Choice? Talenta Halfling on a dinosaur.

Counter Argument for Elves as Barbs:
Wild Elf Barbarian. Practically an architype if they are coming out of Chult. Focus on throwing and ranged weapons.

It's because they are all a bunch of pansies. Barbarians, as a general rule however, are not.

Pretty much any Lycanthrope (or Entomanthrope) makes a good Barbarian...there are few combat archetypes better than the raging were-creature in hybrid form for sheer visual impressiveness. The physical stat bonuses and DR/silver are pretty useful, but the animal HD can cramp your style (unless you minimise them by using a low HD animal as the base animal).

I've long wanted to play in a high enough levelled game to play a Half-Ogre Were-Giant Stag Beetle Barbarian. Horrible LA, but Strength goes through the roof!
Fenrir_Greyback

08-28-07, 01:55 PM
gnoll kuo-tuan or a half orc I'd say...
Istaran

08-28-07, 02:07 PM
Gnoll if/only if the campaign allows you to drop the racial HD (as XE does. Glee ^_^). +4 str/+2 con/+1 nat armor and darkvision for good measure is worth an LA in my opinion.

2nd the lycanthropes. I kind of like the were-tiger myself, for this, though the ECL bump is horrible (seriously though, rage and a 5-hit pounce.. dr 10 and nice str bonus.. the racial HD are effectively d12s if you use the 1/2d+1 rule. +12 str more than makes up for missing 5 bab. And after one class level you qualify for warshaper.

That's funny, my last DM gave me jump penalties for a dwarf, and some other things.
Oh yeah, tnx for reminding me about the movement check penalty. I would've placed dwarves on the fourht place, but then again they do have that movement penalty.
And I thought barbarians weren't able to wear heavy armor?

I think if u were to ignore PHB the best race would be.
1. Warforged
2. Pure-Orc
3. Human
4. Gnoll
5. Lizardfolk

Oh yeah, aren't dragonborns a bit uber even for non PHB games.

The 20 ft speed is not a mouvement penalty, it just means they move naturally at 20 ft speed like gnomes and halflings, that's all!

If anything dwarves have a mouvement bonus in that they suffer no speed penalty for carrying a heavy load or wearing heavy armor. That's what the enhanced carrying capacity ability means when you read it just beside their speed in the PHB

If your Dm gives dwarves penalties to jump checks...
Then I suggest you sit down with your Dm and demand to know why he gave dwarves a penalty to jump checks because every rule in DnD 3.5 says otherwise.

A dwarven barbarian would simply move at 30ft speed in no armor, light or medium armor that's it!

If anything barbarian fast mouvement simply grants a +10 ft to speed in no armor, light or medium armor.
Meaning that a dwarven barbarian moves at 20ft speed in full plate, as normal...

Most barbarians take a short dip in fighter to get heavy armor proficiency and extra feats anyway.

As In fighter2/Barbarian18, fighter4/barbarian16

All these elements coupled with their suit of racial traits means they are up there as the all time best barbarians around along with human.

See that's the thing about house rules, they tend to screw the game.

Oh yeah, aren't dragonborns a bit uber even for non PHB games.

Dragonborn uber? Hardly. They're good for fighter-ish types because of the Con boost, but casters and rogue-types suffer from the Dex penalty and don't (generally) get as much out of whichever ability they pick as fighter-types do.

I never particularly liked them myself because they lose practically everything that makes them their previous race. If it were a +1 or +2 LA template that you could just slap on to another race, that would be good, but it's not. Instead, you lose all your racial abilities (except size and ability modifiers) in exchange for the Dragonborn ones....what's the point in having a base race?

Lots of good feedback here on what races make statistically good barbarians. But don't for a moment think that there is a "best" race for a barbarian. An elf can be built to be a superior barbarian to a half-ogre, and some barbarians have a different focus than others and don't compare very well anyway.
Melpomene

08-29-07, 11:21 AM
Maynads (?) from the Psionic Handbook aren't terrable barbarians, either. You get access to psionic feats (like wall walking), a sonic scream, and a really devistating rage.
YabaTheWhat

08-29-07, 11:39 AM
Warforged have one big drawback as barbarians; the barbarian tends to take a lot of damage, and warforged only get half benefit from cure spells. Of course the plethora of immunities may be worth it. Just make sure the party packs extra healing, or the arcane caster knows Repair spells.

As has been pointed out, there are elven subraces that make good barbarians... because there's an elven subrace taylored to fit any imaginable role. (There are almost as many dwarven subraces, but unlike the elven subraces, dwarven subraces all have a coherent theme.)

Changelings don't make very good pure barbarians, but they're able to take the Warshaper prestige class (CWar) without a level adjustment or racial hitdice. This gives them a tremendous power boost in the level 6-8 range. (Shifters can also take Warshaper, but only benefit from it for a short period each day.)

Dwarves do make good barbarians, if you're willing to put up with the speed reduction (which cancels out the barbarian speed bonus for all intents and purposes). Rather than gaining a +4 jump bonus for a 40 ft movement rate, they simply avoid the -6 jump penalty that dwarves normally get from their reduced speed. (See the jump skill for details.) They get a lot of durability benefits that lend themselves really well to barbarians.
foxtail

08-29-07, 12:25 PM
Thri-kreen from the Expanded Psionics Handbook get a bunch of bonuses to their physical scores (all three, plus Wisdom too, if I remember correctly), natural armor, an epic-caliber Jump bonus, the ability to take psionic feats, and four arms - especially nice if you're using that one variant that gives a barbarian Pounce. It'll cost you 2 racial hit die and +2 LA, but you get a lot for your money.
UH? NO!! the rules are quite clear that dwarves suffer no penalty on jump checks

The only mouvement penalties dwarves suffer is their natural 20 ft speed (wich is'nt a penalty anyway if you wear heavy armor) and is off set by barbarian fast mouvement.
Read the Jump skill description; a base speed of 20 equals a -6 penalty on Jump checks. You're right about the barb's fast movement helping canceling the penalty, but then they'll miss out on the +4 bonus that any 30-speed race is going to get when their speed becomes 40.

Still, dwarf is a decent choice. I love the warforged idea being tossed around, too.

Tnx, I was getting quite confused a bit why my dwarf had some penalties in jump. But orc is still the best for me. I mean, it's the most common barbarian race in PHB anyway. Even the orc model in players handbook was a barbarian.

Hmmm..Barbarian into fighter was always good. I dunno, I've been having experiments on races right now. Like all plain barbarian levels for my half-orc. (e.g. lvl 15 barbarian) I've rarely used non PHB races.
Thus dwarf wouldn't be best suited for a PURE barbarian character coz it relies mostly on the fighter class.

If you'll play hack'n slash get the Half-Giant from DarkSun...
it has lvl adjustment +1 and 2giant hd
(2d8hp, +1bab, fort+3, ref +0, will +0, one bonus talent)

Sats adjustments are:
+8(yes 8)STR, +4CON, -2DEX,-4INT,-4WIS, -4CHA

size: large (more damageing weapons)(10ft reach)
+2 natural armor
speed: 40 feet
darkvision: 60feet
favored class: barbarian

cost you mental stats and a few DEX, but +8 str and +4CON bonus for a barbarian really rocks.

If you dont care about a dumb and kida anti-social character, but really BIG berserker.. go ahead

Shifter - Eberron Race

Shifting and Rage stack :D

edit: just take the shifter traits which boost your STR when you "shift."

Other than that... Warforged from Eberron are also good because they are immune to fatigue.

Many people have mentioned dwarves; that's a good choice as well.

They aren't anti-social. They're dim-witted and lack any force of personality. They really like being around people though, mainly because they lack force of personality and need someone to tell them what to do.

And that's a conversion of a 2nd edition creature from a world where every race was assumed to effectively have a +1 level adjustment. I'd give that creature a +2 LA probably or another 2 hit dice.

I think a half-silver dragon/half dwarf combo is interesting.Because silver dragons and mountain dwarves share the same turf and alignments they make great natural allies. The idea of a clan of dwarves adopting a family of silver dragons and having marriages becomes more probable under these conditions and adds a good backstory to your character.RANDOM THOUGHTS

So we just gave up on reading the Player's Handbook, now?

Dwarves have a -6 penalty to Jump checks. So do gnomes and halflings. So do humans in medium and heavy armor, along with most other races with a land speed of 30 feet.

Quick, everybody, open up your Player's Handbook and turn to page 77. Read the second paragraph under "Check."

Though fast movement does cancel it out (aside from heavy armor), it's erroneous to say they don't have a penalty.

Have a good natural AC.Pour as many skill points as possible into swimming and become an expert at underwater salvage/demolition?Get a tail blade from Savage Species.Trident is a versatile weapon.Get the barbarians move bonus added to the footspeed of a cheetah, you can retreat from a battle faster than a mage using expeditous retreat.Has an Ac bonus as well as natural attacks. The druid spell Awaken animal can be used to create an interesting barbarian, see if your DM insists on you being the maximum size animal before you can progress as a barbarian, might take you forever to earn 40+monster HD as a giant constrictor before becoming a barbarian.Awakened gorilla or babboon,Constrictor or lion...Awaken your inner beast. Most here say ether Warforge and Goliath. I would say Goliath is the best Bar. Counted as large for the pros of large creature and not for the cons. Warforge is good but half heal hurts some. Wand holding that helps but Powerful build gives use of large weapon with no minuses to attack. Plus goliath has +4 str and +2 con with only -2 dex. Only thing is the LA+1 which can be bought out later.

There is, its a spell called air breathing, its in many books. Basically it works just like water breathing, except reversed for undersea creatures. And since there are magic items to let you breathe water, it shouldnt be a stretch to let you have one that lets you breathe air. Also there is an ioun stone that lets you survive without breathing, that should help you get around it.
