| fullmetal8011003-24-07, 08:03 PM | I know about feral for the the strength but I don't know about races. I know the minotaur from dragonlance is good. I'm planning to run a big unarmed hitter, so natural attacks would be good (Like claws). Can some one post the feral template? I don't have the book on me |
| Fallenangel35903-24-07, 08:23 PM | half ogre is +6 str at 1 LA. Orc is +4 str at 0la minotaur is as you said its against code of conduct to post licensed material btw lycanthopy isn't bad for strength... dire werebear :P |
| The_Shaman03-24-07, 08:31 PM | You do realize that you're asking people to post copyrighted material on the forum of the company that owns it, right? AFAIK it's not open game content - if it is, it might be on Crystalkeep . It's in Savage Species, btw. It's quite powerful though, some people have told me they'd probably not include it in their games. Draconic (Draconomicon) could be a decent substitute - bonuses to relevant abilities, some skills, and you get your natural weapons, although they're kinda meh if you ask me. Half-Minotaur is quite good, if you have the Dragon issue where it's detailed. |
| G_Mancer03-25-07, 10:32 AM | Halfogre is a +2LA race in 3.5 (Races of Destiny). but still a VERY good choice. theres nothing like a Half-Orge whirlwind fighter hitting everything within 20 feat as a fullround(or standard i dunno) action. a Feral Goliath(Savage species + Races of Stone) has nastyness about him. two 1d8(arguable 2d6 if your dm lets you go to town with p. build) claws and improved grab(which can also be taken to town with permission-autograpple medium-sized opponents) sure it's a total of +2LA, but you have +8 str and +6 con, fast healing 2, 6 nat armor.... near perfect martial monk if you ask me. or if you want to go barbarian, i coudl see main weapon being armor spikes for 1d6+7 and then two claw attacks at 1d8(or2d6)+4. btw, fast healin2, in combination of d12 hit die and super voltage constitution = you live allways. even with the LA you have more hitpoints that your local gnome/dwarf ranger. even if you on par with the fighter for a level or two, he doesn't have fast healing. it takes me about 2 minuites of sitting down to recover all my hitpoints at lvl 7 for my goliath monk. theres a race caleld Ixbian in MM3. he has 3 hitdice and 1La.. .he's like a minor minitaur... has gore attacks, bonus to intimidate, favored class barbarian...this with the feral template gives you a gore for 1d6, 2 claws at 1d8, and armorspikes or unarmed strikes if you wish to have a primary weapon... but with three attacks as primary natural attack, you probably wont need a weapon. think about it. +9melee (1d6+6), +9melee (1d8+6), +9melee (1d8+6)... i'm not too sure but the claws or gore might have to be secondary....but multi-attack fixes this no prob. good luck |
| Garonak03-25-07, 10:36 AM | Half-Dragon Template is nice, +8 str. Combine it with Monster of Legends (MM2) template +10 str, LA+7. Half-Dragon Monster of Legend Half-Ogre: +24 in str LA of +12 though... |
| G_Mancer03-25-07, 10:41 AM | i just remembered... why a race that boost str? you;ve got +4 str and +2 con from feral but you also have a -2 dex. play a race with bonus to dex and you'll get hit less too. a feral Catfolk for example is a +2LA with a 50 foot movespeed, 7 nat armor, +4 str +2 dex +2 con +2 wis. you cold act like lion all the time.. but i dont mean jsut catfoak, you should look into big Dex and/or Con races too. |
| Finfreeze03-25-07, 12:00 PM | There's the afflicted werebear feral water orc... +24 str +10 con -6 int +2 wis -2 cha 6 HD (d10s), LA +3 Not including the base race, that's 2.2 points of strength per ECL. The hit dice puts them up one step on the feral benefits table. You could go even further and add the half-dragon template, but eh! +32 str +12 con -4 int +2 wis You also get some wings and d12s for hit dice, so I guess it's not all bad. But for the ECL, it's hard to beat a feral water orc. +8 str -2 dex +4 con -6 int -2 cha |
| AMGriffin03-25-07, 12:03 PM | If you're just looking for rrragh hulk smash goodness, the traditional PHB orc isn't a bad choice. You'll be ill suited for anything other then "I hit it with my great axe!" however. Half-ogres, even at LA+2 also work well for the tradtional "BREAKING STUFF!!!!" role. and if you're really feeling up to it, try a Half-dragon orc. Your strength score is +12 for only +3 LA. |
| Polaris03-25-07, 12:13 PM | Guys, The Dragon-Touched Woodelf isn't bad either. The wood-elf gives +2 Str,+2 Dex,-2 Con, -2 Int, and the Dragon-Touched template gives -2 Dex,+2 Con for a net modifier of +2 Str, -2 Int. You get some very minor dragon stuff (and the ability to buy feats with more) but most importantly it's only LA+0 and better than the Half-Orc for smashing things (yes both these get darkvision). -Polaris |
| Decinious03-25-07, 12:31 PM | Start as a young Feral, buy off the +1 template at level 4 using this (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/unearthedRaces.html). Mineral warrior(Underdark) is your next step +2 str buy that off at level 7. Blooded One(Unapproachable East?) +2 or +4 more str, I don't have a copy of that book handy, buy that template off at level 10, and sell your soul to Lloth and grab the Lloth Touched template from MM4 for an extra +6 to str. After you hit level 13 exp and knock yourself back down to level 12 buying off that template it is up to you where you go next, but since buying off templates usually keeps you within one level of your party you are still in good shape. Keep in mind you will be shooting yourself in the head int wise so you might want get a brain Implant using the Symbiotic Creature template somewhere in the mix. |
| Finfreeze03-25-07, 12:53 PM | Keep in mind you will be shooting yourself in the head int wise so you might want get a brain Implant using the Symbiotic Creature template somewhere in the mix. If you want to do that, use a bonsai tree that some druid cast a maximized (empowered too if possible) awaken spell on. It's like having the best of both worlds. |
| Silverthumb12803-25-07, 12:59 PM | Draconic is a good template with +1 LA, and grants Strength, Con, Cha, and Natural Armor. |
| fullmetal8011003-25-07, 11:15 PM | Can some one put in the half-minotaur stats? I hear about it all the time but haven't actually seen it. |
| The_Shaman03-26-07, 04:29 PM | Ehm, I think it was in Dragon. With any luck it might be in some compendium (if WotC have agreed to that) but otherwise you might need to check Paizo. |
| jadehawk03-26-07, 05:06 PM | Goliath is Str +4 with powerful build for LA +1... |
| fullmetal8011003-26-07, 05:11 PM | There are some good ideas out there, but my gm is iffy about stacking templates so the afflicted water orc thing might not work. I'm looking at the buying off LA thing and it is kind of odd, I'll see if my gm is ok with it. |
| Detrix03-26-07, 05:24 PM | Don't forget that you can always enlarge (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/enlargePerson.htm) yourself via the Permanency (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/permanency.htm) spell for the cost of only 500 xp, and the casting of the two spells (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/goodsAndServices.htm#spellcastingAndServ ices). No level adjustment required. |
| fullmetal8011003-26-07, 05:26 PM | I can see doing that but the problem is that it can be dispelled fairly easy. That and with the way I'm setting my character up his intel will be to low to really understand that there are these spells. I'm trying to op him but I'm going to rp him too =P |
| runestar03-27-07, 07:39 AM | As mentioned, orc gives +4str for LA+0. Half-minotaur gives +4str and makes you large. Mineral warrior gives +2 str, but offers loads of other benefits for just LA+1. Can't remember the benefits of feral, but it is supposedly quite strong at LA+1. I would halt at LA+2-3 and take some class lvs here, so you don't become some sort of glass cannon. Your int cannot go below 3. So past a certain point, int decreases will cease to be of any significance, since your int won't fall any lower. If this is the case, might as well leave it at 3 and rp him. Beware of effects which deal int damage though.:P |
| Spikes01k03-27-07, 10:29 AM | If they allow it, you could try my personal build the Hill Orcs (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=811764) |

If this is the case, might as well leave it at 3 and rp him. Beware of effects which deal int damage though. Feral provides +4 strength and natural weapons, but is one of those templates that can drop intelligence to 2. Also, the symbiotic template (used to boost intelligence to reasonable levels) doesn't work on monstrous humanoids, like the kind produced by the feral template (which happens to be an inherited template, oddly enough). Symbiotic only works on humanoids, vermin, animals and plants, even though the sample creature (bugsucker) consists of a humanoid and a magical beast. Savage Species is weird like that. |
| Squall25503-27-07, 04:40 PM | umm. anyone remember the old anthropomorphic baleen whale? i forget where anthropomorphic was from, but this "race" was a low la (2 or 3 IIRC) and had a massive STR boost (>+10). the only downside: you look like a whale. literally. |
| bobothechimp03-27-07, 05:44 PM | Lolth-touched, MMIV is also nice. +6 str/con, among a few other minor benefits for +1 LA. |
| Spikes01k03-27-07, 07:09 PM | Although it is only in hybrid or animal form you could try out my lycan spawn (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=768883) template. They have some weaknesses but are rather neat, and can give you a net +2 strength and natural weapons, however weak they are. |
| runestar03-27-07, 09:54 PM | umm. anyone remember the old anthropomorphic baleen whale? i forget where anthropomorphic was from, but this "race" was a low la (2 or 3 IIRC) and had a massive STR boost (>+10). the only downside: you look like a whale. literally. It is mentioned in the erratum for Savage species, IIRC. 3 racial HD, no LA, quite good physical stats.:) Feral provides +4 strength and natural weapons, but is one of those templates that can drop intelligence to 2. What if it was applied first, before all other int-decreasing templates? I know it is cheesy, and would never allow it, but I am just interested in knowing just how it interacts.:) |
| Detrix03-28-07, 01:37 PM | I can see doing that but the problem is that it can be dispelled fairly easy. That and with the way I'm setting my character up his intel will be to low to really understand that there are these spells. I'm trying to op him but I'm going to rp him too =P You could always pay to have a higher level character cast the enlarge. Besides, how many people see an oger, and their first thought is dispell it? Even at a one trick pony, 3,900g isn't alot, it's better than sacking a level for it. |
| The_Geek03-28-07, 01:51 PM | Runestar, one correction: the half-minotaur (from Dragon) is +12 STR. It's +4 STR, plus the bonuses of changing medium to large (explicitly states so). So that's another +8 STR. (and only +1 LA) Throw on the Feral template (+1 LA) ... +16 STR and Fast Healing and Horns and Claws and Natural Armor (About +5 total) ... I think that works pretty well for what was asked, all for +2 LA |
| jejyman03-28-07, 02:58 PM | Sand Giant Large +18 Str +4 LA 15 levels of Racial hit-dice :P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P |

So that's another +8 STR. (and only +1 LA) I am aware of that. However, +12str for just 1LA is just far too strong. I honestly believe that the designer screwed up on that line(he probably just meant that you get -1 to hit/AC, reach and opposed check bonuses). Personally, I would just ignore that line.:P |
| The_Shaman03-30-07, 03:20 PM | IMO changing size to large, without any additional modifiers, would simply give you a +2 str -2 dex and the other bonuses/penalties of the enlarge spell. |
| Polaris03-30-07, 04:45 PM | IMO changing size to large, without any additional modifiers, would simply give you a +2 str -2 dex and the other bonuses/penalties of the enlarge spell. Except it's not. What you get when you increase in a size category is explicitly laid out in the Monster Manual, and you do get +8 strength (amoung other things). -Polaris |
| The_Shaman03-30-07, 08:29 PM | Ah, well since I don't DM I'm using only the SRD elements. Still, a +2/-2 would seem more balanced to me. Well, it's your thing, really. |
