| FatMonkey1305-17-07, 10:12 PM | The monster as a player race using monster classes... I think this is the best place to put this but it could fit in monsters or classes as well. I need some help w/ constructing a black ethergaunt monster class to allow its use as a player race. As the monster is not open material I will be posting a minimal amount of information. +2 to Int on odd monster class levels (1, 3, 5...) +2 to Dex at levels 4, 8, 12 and 16 +2 to Wis at levels 6 and 14 +2 to Cha at levels 2 and 10 +2 to Con at levels 3 and 18 +2 to Str at level 10 HD at all levels except 3, 6, 9, and 15 +1 to Natural AC at all levels except 1, 4, 8, 12, and 16 +1 level for spells at all levels except 1, 6, and 10 Spell Immunity gained starting at level 6, increasing at levels 9, 11, 14, 17, and 20 Bonus feat at 1st level Total Vision 1/4th rage at 4th level Ensalve 1/day at 6th level Total Vision 1/2th range at 8th level Total Vision 3/4ths range at 12th level Stupefying Gaze at 13th level Ensalve 2/day at 15th level Total Vision at full range at 16th level Jaunt at 18th level Enslave 3/day at 20th level |
| CzarGarrett05-18-07, 08:09 AM | My suggestion for this: Don't. Ethergaunts are powerful. Black Ethergaunts even moreso. Unless this is some sort of epic quasi-deity type campaign, I wouldn't even bother trying. |

That said, it appears that an ethergaunt is more powerful than a wizard at each level except with a bit of tail off in spell casting (which is compensated by the increased intelligence). |
| FatMonkey1305-19-07, 03:41 PM | The spell casting come out rather interestingly. In some ways it is like a sorcerer that has to prepare its spells with a spell book but has unlimited spells known (though w/ more lower level spells and fewer high level spells). Its spells are delayed 3 class levels rather than the delay of 1 class level of a Sorcerer (both compared to a full wizard), and it has a lower caster level. Overall it compares rather well with a normal caster and does seem very well worth the losses of features but it seems better balanced on closer comparison, and if compared to prestige classes it is probably balanced (for non epic play, non gestalt games) if on the higher end. Black Ethergaunt VS Wizard/Sorcerer More lower level spells /day (depends on items and point value of stats) Less higher level spells /day (depends on items and point value of stats) Slower Access to Higher level spells Reduced effects (due to lower caster level) Less HD (and feats, base saves, max skill ranks...) Higher save DC Higher AC/HP More Skill points Special Abilites Unless this is some sort of epic quasi-deity type campaign, I wouldn't even bother trying. The ethergaunt is more powerful in such campaign as by that point it has access to all spells and it will have maxed out caster level in most spells. In a non-epic campaign the ethergaunt is more balanced (personally I find the current epic rules almost unplayable). compare each colour with the racial character class you've generated This is a good idea. If the monster race class is set to create (or approximate) the Ethergaunts in order from least to most powerful things should be easier to balance (I did my homebrew noble mind flayer progression as an extension to the mind flayer progression, so up until later in the racial class there was no difference between the two (other than cosmetic)) Also I hope that what i have posted is ok, I think it fits within what "Copyright & Using Other People's Work" allows but... |
