Broken or not? [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-19-07, 01:21 AM Well, currently me and another DM are having a conversation about his campaign. He says it's unfair to create a halfdragon, orge or minotaur with the current party... that's a +5 level adjustment, and everyone's a ECL 7 currently. Everyone in the party has some sort of level adjustment.

The rest of the party is the following, level 6 Aasimar, level 6 Tiefling, level 4 Minotaur, and a level 7 Human. The DM is not allowing anyone to create a new character with racial hit dice because he believes racial hit dice unbalance the game.

I'm just looking for some oppinions here. What is all of your thoughts?

07-19-07, 01:36 AM They just keep coming. Except in some very few circumstance, like, possibly, Centaur or Shadow Gnomes, races that have LA and Racial Hitdice preform badly.

If the DM is preventing people from being Half-Dragons, then he's either trying to save the players trouble in a rare case of wisdom, or he's playing a kneejerk. People tend to be too mean to take part in the former, but plenty impulsive to commence with the latter.

07-19-07, 03:43 AM Racial Hit Dice is usually something players are trying avoid, not the DM's, because racial hit dice does not give the player anything like a class can give.
Racial hit dice are the monsters "class" to say.

He probably doesn't know how racial Hit Dice work. They count as class levels.

That means your aasimar is level 7 (6+1), your tiefling is level 7 (6+1), your minotaur is level 12 (4+2+6), and your human is level 7.

Since it looks like this is a level 7 party, your half-dragon should start with 4 class levels, your ogre would have 1 class level, and minotaurs are more powerful than everyone else in the party without class levels (ECL +8).

07-19-07, 02:22 PM You could do a Half-Ogre from Races of Destiny. LA +2 and no racial hit dice....

Then you tell the DM, "Put that Ogre in your pipe and smoke it!" Which would be pretty funny, because that pipe would be freaking HUGE!!! He couldn't even lift it to smoke, not to mention the Ogre would be really cheesed off....

Your DM probably thinks racial HD are overpowered because of the minotaur, and the minotaur is, like, 5 ECL above the rest of the party right now, so... yeah... I doubt the DM knows how racial HD actually work.

08-02-07, 04:17 AM Half-Dragons have no RHD, so what's his gripe about them? You could easily bring in a 3rd lvl hlfDrag, and be on par, sort of.
