I hope I'm posting this in the correct place (the mantra of a newbie to any forum).

I'm trying to build some thri-kreen out of the complete psionic, but the rules don't seem to make a lot of sense.

The race seems powerful enough for at least a +1 level adjustment, if not a +2, but it doesn't have one. None of the other races in the CP do either, and some of them are even more powerful than the thri-kreen! From what I understand, when a thri-kreen reaches its third racial level it gains a class level in addition to its racial level making it a ECL 3 creature, or a CR3 encounter. Continuing on in pattern of the table presented, it seems like the creature gains greater benefits that, say, a human would going to the same level.

Also, when it says that the thri-kreen gains a feat or an attribute bonus, is that in addition to the ones it already gains every 3rd/4th level, or is that instead of?

This is the first I've seen of racial levels, at least in this form, and it seems completely different (and imbalanced).

Thanks for any help in advance.

the half-giant has a LA of +1. are you looking at the CP or the EPH?

He's looking at the Complete Psionic.

You might want to look at the thri-kreen present in the Forgotten Realms supplement, Shining South. I don't have a copy around at the moment, but that might be what you want.

If you mean racial levels, then Thri-Kreen take them instead of normal class levels.

I'd get shining south for sure to play one, I think they are supposed to be 2HD and +2 LA, for a lvl 4 ECL. They are fun to play. You can play rangers as them and get multi-weapon fighting instead of two-weapon fighting...you could even try out my new base class (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=939484)if your DM let's you. :D

Make sure you save your poison for when it counts though as it's 1/day. Use it on a spellcaster or someone with low Fort. They are a blast to play though, all around.

The Complete Psionic entry for Thri-kreen is a racial class progression similar to what is in the book Savage Species.

It breaks down the racial abilities, racial Hit Dice, Level Adjustment, and class levels into one table for character progression. I don't have my book with me, but this should be close to how it is setup. The Thri-kreen has 2 racial HD and a LA of +2 for a total ECL (Effective Character Level) of 4. So the first 4 levels of that progression should be just the Thri-kreen abilities and at level 5 should be when the first class level can be taken and the feat for 3rd Hit Die.

OK, that makes sense then. I think the first class level was at racial level 3, the second at RL5. This is going off of memory. Thanks, all, for your input!
