Can dwarves use riding dog? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-31-07, 02:50 PM I was always under the impression that since Dwarves were so stout, and considered Medium characters that they were too heavy for a riding dog, yet too short for an actual horse, so Dwarves use ponies, or in extreme cases mules perhaps. I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

08-31-07, 02:59 PM Not so sure about horses, riding dogs and such, but according to Arms and Equipment Guide the Dwarven Cavalry uses Rust Monsters (Hehe, they're all rusty).

Seriously though, the average dwarf weighs in at 170Lb. +armour, gear, etc...
we'll say around 250Lb. to be generous. A riding dog has on average a 15str which means his light load is 66Lb. times 1.5 because he is a quadraped, or about 100 Lbs. His max load is then 300Lb. That is alot of strain on this poor dog to be carrying around a heavy load all the time (be prepared to call him ol' sway-back!) To be safe, you should generally only ride creatures one size category or larger than yourself - unless you're an orc with no armour and equipment, a deathwish, and one helluva boar.

09-30-07, 03:21 PM There is no absolute limitation on what is and is not a suitable mount, but in general a mount should be at least 1 size category larger than the rider. (DMG p. 204)

Only folk from the Mechanical plane can safely ride a cog.;) :P :D

And Arms and Equipment states that most Dwarven kingdoms train elite mounted calvary That use Stone and wood weapons and armor while mounted on large rust monstes to devistate heavily amoed units. They will also train and ride the Bullette, but such are hard and rare mounts. More of a prized thing, than an instrment of war (but an instrament of war none the less).

Seriously, though, yeah... dwarves need Large mounts. The dwarf in the campaign I play in rides a mouflon (a very large European version of bighorn sheep). The DM made up stats, but I assume they're similar to a mule or warhorse with the natural weapons replaced by one hell of a headbutt.

10-01-07, 10:49 AM I would agree. Unless it's a really, really stocky dog the size of a pony or something; I think there was a feat in Savage Species that lets creatures serve as mounts for something of their size category. After all, if we have dragons, why not have very big dogs?

Dog calvary is a major feature of a 5-book sci-fi series by David Drake and SM Stirling. They had bread dogs to be large enough to serve as war mounts, as horses are not available on the planet.
