Can Hellbred be level 1 characters? [Archive] - Wizards Community

GOing over Tyrants of the Nine Hells...it sounds like a player has to be evil or something....or good and do something really bad and end up going to the hells. THem the DM and player decide instead of a new char, since player's can't resurrect him (low levels maybe?) that they want to roleplay this repenting.

So the hellbred is a modification to any other race in all of D&D.

Friend wants to know if this could be applied to a level 0 or level 1 character, and thus they could start a campaign with a hellbred?

I know as the DM, I can modify/do anything if I want it in the campaign, to make it fit...but in terms of standard gameplay, is hellbred only meant for higher level chars?

03-25-07, 03:44 PM Hellbred lose all memories of their former lives. This is not a template, it's a race, so yes, you can be 1st level. If your character gets turned into a Hellbred in mid-career, you could even change your class if you want.

03-25-07, 08:48 PM But note that you would be starting over from level one. That's kind of hard to fit into a 10th level party. Plus you're party would have to find you (might be tough, you don't appear in the same place as them), plus you aren't likely to want to hang with your old party since that would be suicidal (remember, you're level one now), and you have no memory of them that would lead you to believe you should go with them, and mostly because they're probably not good guys, and now you want to be (you don't become hellbred if you were a good guy to begin with, and now that you are a hellbred your best chance of survival in the afterlife is redemption, which means no more burning peasant villages with your old chums).

One thing I noticed is with the racial language stuff, which states that hellbred retain all the languages they spoke in their past life, which seems like it would require some sort of previous character (or backstory) to apply the hellbred race to. Which I suppose if you want to test your DM's patience, you could claim to be the reincarnation of a high INT bad guy who put all his skill points into Speak Language. ;)

03-26-07, 06:16 AM It's not as if I would go against that. Speaking all languages at first level may be a bit hard to justify, but it's not unbalancing or anything.

03-26-07, 01:36 PM I suspect that hellbred was at one point a transformative race, a la Dragonborn, but they decided to simplify them into a normal race somewhere in development. In the process, some leftover bits stayed that shouldn't have (languages), and some things that should have been added weren't (there's no size or speed in the racial characteristics text). I propose the following house rule changes to make them a functioning race.

Size: Medium
Base Land Speed: 30 feet
Languages: Automatic - Common, Infernal; Bonus - Any non-secret

Meaning that, at one point, they were whatever race they were prior to this transformation. Then, afterwards, they became the Hellbred. Voila, they're a new race. I would have much rather seen them executed like the Dragonborn, though.

So, this is one way to have a non-Druid who speaks Druidic. Helbred, the easy road to Fochlucan Lyrist.
