| ShadeOfDeciet11-01-07, 10:55 AM | Having personally been a fan of the Castlevania series since the first time through Dracula's castle back in 1990-something, I've also been a fan of the Alura Une creatures. Simply because of the interesting design of them, and how really freaky they'd be to actually have to face.... anyways, something that I came up with one sleep-deprived 'morning' at 2:00-something, when all sane people are already sleeping... Allura [Race] The Alura Une, a massive creature that seems the fusion of a plant and a young woman, feared by most because of its long reach, vast defense, and ability to drain blood from the unfortunate. If such a creature is mortally wounded and then left before dying, it will release the woman from its form, allowing her a chance to live beyond the life of her plant host. This new being is an allura, an initially weak, and heretofore unheard of creature, a mix between humans and plants, without the adaptability or full power of either. Non-Mechanical 'Specs (-) Starting Age: Most Allura start adventuring at a young as, as most denizens of the dungeons they were in are none-too-happy about the formidable plant-monster turning into a much less potent plant-human. Despite their physical appearance, an Allura can be either very old or very young, and change little over the years. Age Categories Middle Age: 40 years Old Age: 63 years Venerable: 85 years Maximum Age: +5d10 years (-) Starting Height and Weight: An Allura, due to its small-ish size and build, are usually about the height and weight of a young human, though they tend to be lighter even than that. Allura, male Base Height: 4' 7" Height Modifier: +2d8 Base Weight: 112 lbs. Weight Modifier: x(1d4) lbs. Allura, female Base Height: 4' 2" Height Modifier: +2d8 Base Weight: 78 lbs. Weight Modifier: x(1d4) lbs. Racial Traits (-) Fey: As fey, an allura has low-light vision (below), though they gain sustenance in a different manner than normal humanoids (see Blood Sustenance, below). (-) +2 Con, -2 Cha: An allura is hardier than most due to her plant heritage, but their plant-like mindset makes it harder for them to relate to other creatures. (-) Medium size (-) Base Land Speed: 30 feet (-) Low-light Vision: An allura can see four times as far as a human in starlight or moonlight, and can see twice as far as a human in less lighting. (-) Blood Sustenance (Ex): In order to gain sustenance, an allura must absorb the blood of dead creatures, much as a plant can use the deceased for sustenance. An allura requires the blood from a creature no more than one size smaller than her or larger (i.e. a Small creature or larger, but not, say, a cat), and consuming this much blood 'feeds' her for the day. An allura that does not feed properly each day is penalized in the same way as a human that hasn't eaten. (-) Root-locked: In place of a human's need to sleep, an allura must remain rooted in soil for 4 hours a day. While so rooted, she is affected as if under the Rooted special ability, though she is still prone, helpless and unconscious, as if sleeping normally. (-) Rooted (Ex): A vestige of the allura's old form, as a standard action, she can become 'rooted' to the spot, wrapping fibrous tendons around her entire body to sheathe herself protectively, while vines reach out of the ground and wrap around her lower legs, binding them together and in place up to her knees. This ability removes her ability to move at all (all speeds are reduced to zero), and she loses her Dexterity and Dodge bonuses, if any, to armor class. She cannot take any physical action while rooted, though she can take purely mental ones, such as manifesting powers or casting a spell with no somatic components. Being rooted does not interfere with an alura's visibility, or otherwise impede her. While rooted, the allura gains Light Fortifcation, as the armor enchantment, giving her a 25% chance to ignore bonus damage from sneak attacks and critical hits. She also ignores the first two points of damage from all attacks directed at her, physical, magical and psionic alike. Finally, her rooted form has Fire Vulnerability, forcing her to take an additional 50% fire damage. Fire damage is similarly not reduced by Rooted. A rooted allura is treated as a Plant in regards to spells, powers, and other special abilities, with the augmented subtype of her normal type(s). (-) Automatic Language: Common. Bonus Language: Sylvan (-) Favored Class: Ranger. An Allura's ranger levels don't count when determining whether she takes an experience penalty for having more than one base class. And... that should be it.. hopefully I didn't forget anything.. EDIT LOG 11-01-07 - Formatting errors, finishing Rooted 11-04-07 - Added Base Land Speed, Age, Height, Weight; Removed reference to 'Claymore' race 11-07-07 - Changed Type from Plant to Fey, Wisdom penalty changed to Charisma penalty, Added 'Sylvan' as a bonus language, Changed Favored Class from 'Any' to 'Ranger' |
| Japan_the_cougar11-01-07, 01:26 PM | Needs land speed. Otherwise, cool. Big fan of Castlevania myself (only own the more recent ones, though [except on emulator]) |
| TevolRia11-02-07, 12:33 PM | I remeber there being two types, a blue flowered one and a white flowered one. how about age, height, weight. can there be males and females of this race? the game had only females, but males would be useful for players. wouldn't it be better if they had the fey type? I do like your sentient plant idea though. |
| Rustmonster11-04-07, 04:03 PM | (-) Favored Class: Any. A claymore's highest level class doesn't count when determining whether she takes an experience penalty for having more than one base class. Why does it say "claymore"? |
| ShadeOfDeciet11-04-07, 10:08 PM | Alright, so, now that I'm back from a weekend of anime goodness (and bad things, but that's another story..), time to fix things.. Land speed would be a good idea... 30 feet, as per the standard for medium creatures (other than dwarves). Actually, there is, now at least, three versions. The white flowers were the old 'generic' ones - see 'em all the times, nothing amazingly different about them, while the old blue ones were powered-up forms, if I remember. Now, though, pretty much all you'll see in a Castlevania game is... green plant, with sometimes red flowering... which is weird. As for Age, Height, Weight, etc... those will probably be almost straight from the human table, as that's basically what they are. Hadn't though about Fey as the type, to be honest. Males are doable, if for no other reasons than hey, it'd be interesting and secondly, Disgaea 2. Which is, as far as I know, they only RPG to ever have a male version of that type of creature (because not even NIS would have top-less flat-chested girls in their games. I mean, even Etna and Flonne [both of whom get ribbed in the first game for being flat-as-a-board] wear tops. Flonne, 'cause she's an angel, obviously. Etna.. no real clue, other than getting out of a lawsuit... anyways, enough Disgaea-talk, this be a CV thread.... >.>; ) And finally, it says Claymore because, well... I edited this off of a Claymore race (from the manga of the same name) that I wrote, and obviously didn't get that. ----- I'm also considering racial heritage feats to allow them to reclaim plant-like traits, and to make actual use of their blood-feeding ability.... |
| TevolRia11-05-07, 12:38 PM | perhaps a feat that can be taken only at first level to represent the ones that were originally fed on demon blood? demon blooded allura prerequisites: 1st level, allura benefit: can attack and cast spells with somatic components while rooted. |
| Rustmonster11-05-07, 09:50 PM | I don't really understand why they are plant, since this race is really only the girl part. I beleive they should probably just be humanoid (or fey). That removes some of the confusion of the "augmented" thing. Pehaps make it that they count FULLY as a plant while "rooted". Also, I'm not quite sold on the blood drain. It's a little bit cumbersome. Everyday is relativly unreasonable, especially as you must find a willing or helpless doner. What I suggest is that they do not require food, but must instead drink blood everyday. Now, they would eb able to get this blood from dead things only. So, they can , say, kill a chicken, then drink it's blood. This way they don't have to be as aggressive. If they don't get blood, they are concidered like a human that didn't eat. Next up, I'd like to address the abiltiy adjustments. The +2 CON is nice, because they were pretty damn hard to kill. The wisdom penalty is strange. "Having a different veiw of the world" would not cause you to be less wise. Everyone has that. Maybe give a penalty to cha as they have trouble relating to others because of their different veiws. Yes, I know these are dwarf stats, but they fit nicely. Also, I'd suggest a skill bonus to Survival and/or knowledge (nature). Next, perhaps give them silvan as a racial language, and a few other related ones as bonus. No bonus languages is a little harsh. Even kobolds get two. Granted, they are common and undercommon, which is... dissapointing. The favoured class. I'd say ranger. Humans and half-elves have any as a bonus. Any for favoured class is pretty sweet, and it's mainly because they are very adaptable. I think it's been shown that alura unes arn't really like that. Druid is more atuned to nature, although I dislike how they turn into animals and have an animal companion, as that does not fit with the plant theme. A variant that worked more with plants would be a nice fit. |
| ShadeOfDeciet11-07-07, 10:20 PM | That's the second time someone suggested Fey, and after looking it over, really does make sense. Especially since fey are 'usually in the shape of a humanoid' anyway. Definately adding the 'fully plant' for being rooted, though, hadn't thought of that one.. And since it simply 'feeds' on the blood, and doesn't actually have a drain attack in any game, it makes more sense that way. That, and they don't have to be 'zOMG need bludz!' or anything of the sort... For ability mods, I just tossed out Wisdom because it seemed fitting, but given the nature of them, Charisma is probably a better fit. Besides, any special abilities they'd gain (via feats or racial classes, etc.) would be Con-based anyways, so... A +2 racial bonus sounds about right, to me.. Sylvan is in as a bonus language, though I don't really know of any other ones that would be fitting. Perhaps Undercommon, given their 'birth' in dungeon-like areas? And yes to Ranger, as well. While I don't really *like* the idea of how favored class works, someone that in tune with nature (i.e. being nature), works well for it... Now, to just think of a few feats that would allow it to be nice either way. I'm liking the idea of a rooted, full-casting allura similar to that 'Demon-blooded Allura' feat, perhaps something like that for the other classes as well.. A TWF-ing Allura Ranger that specialized in mini tendrils would be interesting.... |
| Aleolus11-08-07, 09:42 PM | Looks quite interesting. I've only played one Castlevania game myself, so I can't talk about that, but I only have one thing to say about this race from a DnD point of view. Their Blood Sustenance ability should probably read "An allura requires the blood from a creature no more than one size smaller than her." The way you have it now, one of them could feed themselves for a full day on the blood of a pixie, and be perfectly fine. Rewording it the way I have it implies that a medium sized Allura could feed herself from the blood off a dead halfling, a dead human, ogre, or larger, but a Tine, Fine or Diminutive creature is too small to provide sufficient sustenance. |
| TevolRia11-13-07, 12:32 PM | think we could work on flea-men next? I was thinking small size, and perhaps a racial dodge bonus (or maybe dodge and mobility as bonus feats). |
| Aleolus11-13-07, 01:07 PM | *Shudder* GOD, Flea-men! Small size, +5 Dodge bonus to AC, +10 on Jump checks, Dodge and Mobility automatically, +4 Dex, -10 CHA |
| TevolRia11-14-07, 10:19 AM | nice. I always thought they both cool and creepy and annoying all at once. actaully playing one would be interesting. perhaps we could just start translating castlevania creatures into D&D monsters (stat them out). hey, do you think the devil forge masters are worth working on? I have actually put work into a Belmont clansman prestige class. prerequisites: vampire hunter (from libris mortis) knowledge religion 8 ranks must be of the belmont bloodline (see below). Belmont Clansman (HD8, full base attack bonus, good reflex and will saves) Whip damage boost (+1 weapon) Favored enemy (Vampires) +2 Whip damage boost (lethal damage, +2 weapon) Necropotent (whip) Whip damage boost (undead bane, +3 weapon) Favored enemy (Vampires) +4 Whip damage boost (can critical undead, +4 weapon) Improved Vampire Hunter Whip damage boost (disruption, +5 weapon) Favored enemy (Vampires) +6 belmont bloodline prerequisit: human, 1st level only always have knowledge religion as a class skill, proficientcy with whips of all kinds. |
| ShadeOfDeciet11-15-07, 10:12 PM | Two new feats for an aspiring Allura.. Raised on the Blood of Angels [Allura] Where-as a normal allura springs from an alura une that fed on the blood of all manner of creatures, your 'parent' was fed almost exclusively on angelic blood, turning your hair a shining golden hue, and granting you a heightened skill with divine magic. Prerequisite: Wisdom 13, Allura (race), Ability to cast divine spells Benefit: While under the effects of your Rooted ability, you may apply the Still Spell feat to any Divine spell you cast, though you must sacrifice an additional spell of the same level or higher (or a spell slot, if a spontaneous caster) as the spell being cast. Special: If you possess the Still Spell feat, once per day per point of Intelligence bonus (minimum once per day), you can instead spontaneous apply the effects of that feat to any spell you cast while Rooted. Special: Can only be taken at 1st level. If the spellcasting class used to meet this feats prerequisites uses a different casting ability than Intelligence, that ability may be used in place of Intelligence for meeting this feat's prerequisites, in addition to any other feat that requires this one as a prerequisite. Raised on the Blood of Demons [Allura] Where-as a normal allura springs from an alura une that fed on the blood of all manner of creatures, your 'parent' was fed almost exclusively on demonic blood, turning your hair a brilliant shade of blue, and granting you a heightened skill with arcane magic. Prerequisite: Intelligence 13, Allura (race), Ability to cast arcane spells Benefit: While under the effects of your Rooted ability, you may apply the Still Spell feat to any Arcane spell you cast, though you must sacrifice an additional spell of the same level or higher (or a spell slot, if a spontaneous caster) as the spell being cast. The general idea behind them is to allow casters full access to their spells, even while under the protective fold of Rooted (which I believe to be both a boon and hinderance to any caster [reduced maneuverability/dodging, better survivability against damage]), though at a potentially steep cost. Maybe an advanced/improved version to allow it for free? Or would that be stepping on the realms of Epic too much? Any thoughts about a feat to replicate the Venusweed/Alura Une ability to throw blood-draining roses (blood-draining as in Constitution damage, since any rose that hit you in the games turned red from your blood). |

Just wanted to point out, Vampire Killer was retconned in the newer games. It is now a flail, not a whip. This can help get around D&D woeful whip rules. |
| TevolRia11-16-07, 12:41 PM | I disagree; it is still a whip, just with a small bulb at the end of it. |
| ShadeOfDeciet11-16-07, 01:28 PM | The version of the whip used in all newer games is the whip's third form from the previous games - a Chain whip with steel tip at the end, used to crush foes more-so than to slash them. I'd say use flail stats except with the special whip rules, or just use a whip and change damage to 1d4 lethal bludgeoning, with no damage mitigation via armor bonus. |
