Catfolk make good tactical fighters. Your typical heavy-armor fighter wouldn't take advantage of the catfolk's biggest bonuses: boosted speed and dexterity. The natural armor and skill bonuses would still help a little, but those alone wouldn't be worth the lost level.

i'd probably get some bracers of armor for him, along with feats that boost AC like dodge and such, and maybe even take the martial study feat a couple times.

We playtested a catfolk swordsage in Friday's Land of Nine Swords game. Even though I converted the +1 LA to a level of expert, the catfolk suffered from the lost level in swordsage.

You mention using some martial maneuvers. I rewrote the race as a +0 LA martial adept race:

en, i'd probably use the martal study feats to get things like windstride and other maneuvers or stances that boost speed.

I like catfolk, they work. I built a pretty good catfolk caster...but it counts as a melee unit =p

Catfolk
Spellthief 9/ Daggerspell Mage 10/ Sorcerer 1
Feats: Imp. Init., Quick Reconnoiter, Ambidexterity, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus(Dagger), Weapon Finesse(Dagger), Catfolk Pounce.
SINK ability points into Dex. Just max the crap outta it. Put arcane levels from Dag Mage into sorc.
Enter fight- +12 init. Chances are, your going first. Charge the strongest enemy you can safely get to within 80 ft. Get like 6 attacks at +like 15 or 20 to each hit. Each hit deals your daggers damage plus 6D6 sneak attack damage. Then use your level 10 Dagger Flurry to pull off a cone of cold or sumthin really strong from sorc levels.

THE END =p

Ever smelled cat pee?

I assume catfolk, even with their high standards of (licked) cleanliness, would still stink mildly of it. :weep:

Sigma, Cat's don't pee on themselves, maybe on other cats but not them selves, I doubt a humanoid version will pee on them selves either.

Also in Miniatures Handbook, incase you have that more readily available. Might be outdated version though.

If you want a more fighter-like catfolk, the Warblade class would allow you to keep most of the benefits of the race. Medium armor means that you can capitalize on the Dex bonus, the speed boost counters the medium armor speed loss, and the natural armor bonus helps to make up for the lack of heavy armor.

I like Catfolk, but have yet to play the Catfolk Ranger/Fighter/Ruathar wielding an Elven Courtblade that I have lined up for whatever game I play next.

I'd say they make excellent fighters, so long as you stick to the light or no armor to capatalize their strengths. The light armor won't limit their Dex (usually, there's a catfolk rouge in my game who's neraly limited by Padded armor. I need to let her get shadowsilk padded soon) and it won't limit their speed. These are their advantages over other fighters. Use them.

With such high Dex scores, it's easy to max out your armor, to the point where you've got a higher AC without armor. If you have a decent Cha score (which shouldn't be hard- you get a racial bonus to it) a level of Battledancer can do you wonders. (Battledancer is basically a Cha-based monk with fewer abilities and full BAB, from the Dragon Magazine Compendium.)

Catfolk ninjas are downright frightening. My first time playing one I wound up with the same amount of HP as AC until sixth level and we max out hit points. A catfolk can be a decent front-line combatant even without actual levels in fighter, and swordsage would be the most fitting for the race if you have Tome of Battle.

i was thinking of going fighter for 2 levels, then barbarian for 2 levels, and then go warblade straight through. for bonus feats i'm not sure what i would take, deffinatley extra rage at level 3. and other than that i would probably go with diamond mind and stone dragon maneuvers.

We have a Catfolk drunken master in our party - he simply rocks.

Just for the fun of doing so, we also had an Awakened Winged Catfolk Skeleton Fighter 7 Order of the Bow Initiate 10 with Gloves of Dexterity +6 in the Party... for one night. Guy had about 42 Dex, AC 32 (touch 30), wasn't wearing any armor, and used a composite longbow... it just HURT. That was "the night" (TM), when we were all drunk, and i asked the players to design the strongest characters they could think of, and beat my BBEG from the other campaign.

I so lost the fight.

erm, back to topic: Catfolk are good if combined with anything that let's you add your WIS or CHA bonus to AC, and they make excellent ranged combatants as well as rogues. They also make good warlocks. Just remember to max out your Dex.
