I really like the idea of a cat as a character, but i have no idea how to make it work as a player race.

I was thinking either having it be a lycanthrope always in animal form or use the cat entry and add class levels, i really dont know how to make these happen.

If you can help i would really appreciate any help/advice or any new ideas on the character.

Thanks in advance

You might want to check this homebrew basic class: Cat Burglar (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=853487). Basically, it's a skill-monkey who can wildshape into a cat at level 1, and gain some more benefits.

You actually have a couple of options in terms of a cat race. The first and my personal favorite are the tibbit. They can be found in the dragon compendium on page 25. They are a werecat race small and a lot of fun to play. Your second option is the catfolk out of races of the wild page 92. More of an anthro cat still plenty of fun to play.

Im not sure how much info I can give you on the race without violating the CoC.

There are a few issues you'll need to overcome or deal with when playing a cat:

The tiny size and Str penalty will mean that you'll be able to carry next to nothing. Others will probably have to carry things for you.
The lack of hands means you'll have trouble manipulating things and casting spells with somatic components.
Cat's vocal cords don't allow for speach. Unless you're playing a talking cat-like race, you won't be able to talk.

Now, assuming you find ways around those things, do note that a cat would be a very effective arcane caster, and a pretty good rogue too (good to the point of being unbalanced). The only thing keeping the cat from being an awesome rogue is that with their tiny size, they have to enter the target's square to attack (provoking an AoO). Still, whether you're a giant using a greatsword, a human with a short sword, or a cat using claws, sneak attack always deals xd6 damage. So, even though you can never normally claw for more than a point of damage, you'll be able to deal solid amounts of sneak attack damage, and you get three attacks per round.

I'm just bringing these things up, because you're liable to upset the DM if he isn't prepared for it.

If you want an actual cat with class levels, you'll need an intelligence of at least 3.
For that, check out the druid spell Awaken (PHB).

Hmm, the simplest way to play a cat is playing a Tibbit in my opinion. You just have to ignore the want to shift to human form at times, but you'll be tiny, have scent, some bonuses to spot and listen, and darkvision.

You can find it in Dragon Compendium I

~Bowen

The spell Awaken will serve your purpose GodGoblin.
Awaken
Transmutation
Level: Drd 5
Components: V, S, DF, XP
Casting Time: 24 hours
Range: Touch
Target: Animal or tree touched
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

You awaken a tree or animal to humanlike sentience. To succeed, you must make a Will save (DC 10 + the animal’s current HD, or the HD the tree will have once awakened).

The awakened animal or tree is friendly toward you. You have no special empathy or connection with a creature you awaken, although it serves you in specific tasks or endeavors if you communicate your desires to it.

An awakened tree has characteristics as if it were an animated object, except that it gains the plant type and its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores are each 3d6. An awakened plant gains the ability to move its limbs, roots, vines, creepers, and so forth, and it has senses similar to a human’s.

An awakened animal gets 3d6 Intelligence, +1d3 Charisma, and +2 HD. Its type becomes magical beast (augmented animal). An awakened animal can’t serve as an animal companion, familiar, or special mount.

An awakened tree or animal can speak one language that you know, plus one additional language that you know per point of Intelligence bonus (if any).

XP Cost
250 XP.

Just ignore the XP cost, assuming that a druid had previously awakened you and made it permanent with the help of a wizard somehow. I've highlighted the important portion of the quoted spell.

Awaken does not need to be made permanent. The duration of "instantaneous" means that once it's been cast, the magic is over, and the effect is permanent and non-magical (not subject to dispelling or suppression). Essentially, the animal can't be "un-awakened."

You might also want to look at the Anthropormiphic Animals in Savage Species. Yes, its a 3.0 book that most DMs cringe at the mention of, but there are some very useful and not overpowered things in there.

One question: What would be the base stats for a cat (before the augmentations of awaken)?
1 ton ghost

there are 2 immediately feasible and mapped out ways and means for this
-Anthropomorphic cat-people as mentioned prior (Savage Species)
-Catfolk (Races of the Wild).

i prefer the later. very compelling PC race.

A game I know of allows a 'cat' race based off the afore mentioned Tibbets (no shapeshifting), and they work. Seems an elderly Druid wanted some companions and Awakened some of the strays that hung around his home. They come in the over sized (tiny), normal cat variety and a rarer but more 'anthro-', Puss-in-Boots (small) sport line. I think these are based on Halflings, but I'm not sure. The cat-like are more so, contrary, cruel at times and incredibly selfish in a petty way, while the PiB are much more noble and admirable in every regard, often worshiping Bast of the Egyptian pantheon. Biology is left to the imagination.

Well, I don't think you'd roll for it. If you did, the general formula is to subtract either 10 or 11 from the stat (if it's even or odd respectively). For example, a 13 would be a +2 racial mod (13 - 11 = 2).

Now, using that, the base stats of the cat are:
Str 3
Dex 15
Con 10
Int 2
Wis 12
Cha 7

Going from there, we can calcuate the adjustments. We'll leave Int out, as it's handled seperately by the Awaken spell, you would only roll for five stats, and the Int gets a 3d6 (as opposed to the standard 4d6 drop the lowest). Also, afterward, remember to add in the extra 1d3 Cha. So, the modifiers are:
Str -8
Dex +4
Con +0
Int special
Wis +2
Cha -4, +1d3
I hope that makes sense. ;)

Yeah, actually that does. So INT is actually 2+3d6?
No. It's Int becomes 3d6, it doesn't gain +3d6. Assuming you're using something akin to 4d6-drop-the-lowest, its Int score would probably be lower on average.

Of course, you can always talk the DM into being lenient, and just allowing you to roll the normal set of six stats, and place them where you like. I doubt it would really break things, given that you're already playing a cat. ;)

What class sould the cat be?
Small sized (and smaller) races tend to make good rogues and arcane casters. Where they tend to fail is as front-line melee fighters. They'd make okay clerics, but they'd be much better druids (given that at 5th level, they can Wild Shape into bigger forms when they want, and they get an animal companion body guard).

The only thing to beware of is that as a tiny creature, you have a reach of 0 feet, which means you have to enter into a target's square to make a melee attack or use a melee touch spell, which provokes an Attack of Opportunity.

Rogue or scout fits best imo and should be their favourite class. That aside, a cat telepath can really freak me out.

You might look into the Lynx description from Races of Faerun, if it's available to you. It's meant to represnt cats larger than house cats but smaller than the big cats, such as lynxes, ocelots and the like. Small size, slightly better stats, and pounce. Handy stuff.

Back to the stats issue: what if I use point buy? What INT modifiers would I have? Or maybe because it's 3d6 (min 3 and max 18 which is normal) there should be no modifier?
And the +2 HD you get you have to level-up to, and only then start with PC levels?
And what about skill bonuses? Cats MUST have a bonus to jump ,move silently, spot and listen. Also, what about low-light vision? Cats have that.
I would say something like +4 to jump & MS, as well as +2 to spot & listen.

As per the SRD description that was linked ...

Cats have a +4 racial bonus on Climb, Hide, and Move Silently checks and a +8 racial bonus on Jump checks. Cats have a +8 racial bonus on Balance checks. They use their Dexterity modifier instead of their Strength modifier for Climb and Jump checks. *In areas of tall grass or heavy undergrowth, the Hide bonus rises to +8.

also they would have Low Light Vision, Scent, Stealthy (feat) and Weapon Finesse (feat) and natural weapons claws (1d2) and bite (1d3)

because the awakened version has an added +2HD that would essentially be an LA+2 ... you are the equivalent of a 2nd level character before adding any class levels.

if any of that was inaccurate, someone please correct me. I believe I covered everything though.

Cat

Ability Modifiers: +4 Dex, -4 Str
Size: Tiny (+8 hide, -8 grapple, encumbrance changes, has no threat range)
Speed: 20 feet
Low-light Vision
Scent
Natural Jumper: +8 racial bonus on jump checks (cancels out the movement and str penalties)
Alert: +2 to Spot and Listen Checks
Sneaky: +4 to Move Silently
Weapon Finesse: Cats have weapon finesse as a bonus feat
Claws and bite: Cats have natural attacks, two claws (1d2) and a bite (1d3).
Exotic form: Cats can't wear armor designed for humanoids and their armor costs twice as much as for a humanoid creature of the same size.
No thumbs: Cats wield weapons as if the weapon were one size category larger. For example a tiny-sized longsword is a two-handed weapon for a cat.
Distracted: Cats suffer a -3 penalty to Will saves.
Wall-starer: Cats occasionally stare at blank walls. . . for hours.

There.

If you want you might want to have something for not being able to talk, but talking cats are fine in my (fantasy) book.

Mmmm....
No. Why should cats recieve a penalty for will saves? Furthermore, "Wall-starer"? WTF MAN?!?!! I had a cat and I personally NEVER saw him stare at walls, so that's just plain not-necessary. What about the +2 WIS modifier that the MM 3.5 shows? That's -8 STR, not -4.
Another thing: NO THUMBS MEANS NO THUMBS. AT ALL. They can't hold anything. At all. Read the PHB. In chapter seven it says that armor for a tiny non-humanoid creature would cost the same, but weigh only 1/10. The speed is 30 ft, not 20 ft. What about the bonuses to balance and hide (racial bonuses; stacks with size).
At least the claws and bite attacks you got right...

BTW, how sould we deal with charisma? There is -4, but also +d3. Should they just cancel each other out? I think that will be better than rolling each time. What do you think?

You handle it normally (put in your base stat and apply the -4 racial mod) and then add in the +1d3 afterward. They don't cancel eachother out. The closest you can come to them canceling out is if you roll a 3, in which case, you still have a net -1 to Cha.

@ Robbypants (and everyone else :P), According to Savage Species page 22, the '3d6 intelligence' of awakened characters/animals is actually the usual "4d6, drop the lowest". Also, the spell usually works with unaltered animals, so a cat would have a charisma of 8-10.
It also suggests you go the route of calculating ability adjustments and roll/point buy for the final stats, because monsters usually have 'rolled' scores of 10 or 11 (page 12, same book).

Therefore, my take would be Str -8, Dex +4, Con +0, Wis +2, Cha -2 or +0
then roll/point buy for stats. You also have 2 and 1/4 animal HD as an awakened cat, but you could persuade your DM that 2 HD is fine (or that you only need class HD and no animal HD, at mid levels there won't be much of a difference anyway), or use retraining from PHB2 to get rid of your animal HD (if your DM allows).

Also, according to SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/awaken.htm) your awakened cat will be able to speak at least one language. There are some feats that make your tiny size an advantage (check out underfoot combat in races of the wild, you can be the feared Pinky!) and magic items can offset many of your minor inconveniences (everyone should have a bag of holding anyway, no?) And frankly, equipment weight is not very problematic. Sure, as a tiny creature you can carry only ½ of what a medium creature with the same STR can carry, but a tiny weapon has 1/4 the weight of its medium counterpart and exotic armor cost the same and weighs 1/10th of its medium counterparts (but, sadly, has only ½ the AC). Magic armor resize and refit automatically (or at least magic barding, for a cat like you), but I agree that size-static equipment might be a problem, as will your lack of thumbs with certain skill checks.
I even think I made an awakened cat spellthief once... Think I have the sheet lying somewhere still, even though he has never seen actual play.

Anyway, that's my two balls of yarn.

(I think I am not violating anything here, because I don't post quotes from the sourcebook, I'm speaking generally of what's in it. I hope I'm right.)

My cats can pick things up. There are plenty of animals that don't have thumbs that still pick things up and use them a little bit, usually by using both of their paws to manipulate items. My friend has a cat that can eat with a fork. But he has rudimentary thumbs. . .

They also stare at the walls. All of my cats have, every cat I've ever been around, either at my friend's house or outside, have always stared at inanimate objects for long periods of time. Just because your cat is a ninja and doesn't let you see him staring at walls, doesn't mean it isn't happening. Pay more attention to your cat.

Also, it was a :censored: joke.

I realize that the cat stats in the MM have -8 str, perhaps you might want to consider that maybe (just maybe) I wasn't using the MM stats? I was making a playable race with humorous features. A -8 str on a tiny creature isn't exactly what I'd call "playable".

I wasn't using the awaken spell or the monster manual. Also, even if I were using the MM for stats, I don't use the DMG's stat conversion to make playable races from MM entries. It gives stats that are too high or too low for a PC race, even if they're balanced.

Your post, if it isn't humorous, is annoyingly harsh. Be more constructive with your feedback.

If it is humorous, I can't tell.
Norr

Could you explain whay charisma is either -2 or +0?

Certainly. The way I reason is that the cat has CHA 7 + 1d3. If you add this 1d3 before you calculate stat adjustments, it'll land on either -2 (for 1 or 2) or +0 (for 3). This is just my take on the whole thing, and you are under no circumstances required to follow this line of reasoning.
My point is that you could have the cats CHA adjustment at either -2 or +0, whichever floats your boat. or bag of tea.
If you plan on doing something requiring a bit of charm, try persuading the DM for +0, since that means your cat won't have such a dull personality.

Also, the lack of thumbs aren't all that debilitating. You have humanoids in the party, right? Also, mouthpick weapons (dungeonomicon I think) can be used just fine by kitteh, and a reach mouthpick weapon gives you 5ft reach too.

That's probably a good choice. There was a cat race that WOTC posted up a while ago. It was cute. I think it was an april fool's joke. . .

BTW Windspear, I noticed something that you said that was wrong, and since to you a good conversation is confrontational and highly critical. . .
In chapter seven it says that armor for a tiny non-humanoid creature would cost the same, but weigh only 1/10.You need to read what I said again or learn math. I said it costs twice as much as armor designed for a humanoid creature of the same size.

If you check your chart you'll see that Tiny humanoid creatures armor costs 1/2 that of a medium sized humanoid, but tiny non-humanoid armor is 1x the cost for a medium creature. That makes "their armor costs twice as much as for a humanoid creature of the same size". Which is exactly what I said.

Thanks again for the criticism!

Also, do a google search for "Why do cats stare at walls?" You may notice that other people have also noticed this trend.

The reason they do it is because they are more alert, but it is more amusing to say it is because they're constantly distracted because that's what it looks like to us.

The typical mod for a 7 would be -4 (7 - 11 = -4). Adding 1d3 after the fact gets you anywhere between -1 and -3.

-0 is too liberal. Anyway you slice it, you'll always end up with a negative modifier. If you wanted to get rid of the 1d3 roll, I'd say take the average and make it a simple -2. Otherwise, just add in the -4 and then add in 1d3.
Ekko

01-21-08, 12:23 AM
Just, for simplicity, knock off the 2 HD. This way, cat's are playable from level one, and can actually contribute as a caster (which is likely what they'd be, anyways).

To avoid a debate, roll the 1d3 for Charisma each time you make the character, but, to inject some balance into this, a "liberal" +0 seems fine.

You'd also get Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat.

In conclusion:
Stray Cat: Free.
Awaken: 250 xp, 24 hours.
Warlock levels: Free.

Flying lazer cat: Priceless.

I would just point buy or roll stats for an awakened cat NPC. Cat scout with pounce. 2HD natural for an awakened on with a LA of +0 (treat as a 2nd level character).

-8 strength, +4 dex,+2 Wisdom,+2 Cha (average result of the 1d3). All ability socres on a PC cat would be 8 with point buy.
Bonus weapon finesse feat. Its other abilities would probably be balenced out by its tiny size.

While I hate the "RAW" method for making cats into a player race, I think the +1d3 Charisma is on top of the cat's already low charisma (7 I think).

Realistically, once a stat gets to -4 or lower, it becomes a dump stat. The difference between -4 and -8 is negligable, as you will never play a cat with a Str-based class. For balance purposes, I'd count the -8 on Str the same as a -4. Trying to get the modifiers to all add up to zero will get you wierd results.

Also, the tiny size is a huge benifit depending on your role. Again, people are going to play cats with classes they're good at, and tiny size helps a lot for arcane casters.

When balancing a race, you really have to look at it's best case scenario, not the average case scenario. Typically, people will play to a races strengths. Balancing factors that never come into play don't really balance anything.

I see where you're going with the +2 Cha, but I think they're fine as is (if not fairly powerful).

With a 14 str (max 1st level str), super-strong cat could carry 87.5 pounds max.

hmm. . . I don't think my cat could manage that, but he's probably around a 6, so 30 pounds. . .

But wait, they're quadrapeds!

With a 2 str, an average cat can carry 15 pounds. . .

Quick, go put a 15 pound weight on your cat. See how well it does. Super-strong-cat would have a 10 str, being able to carry 75 pounds!

I think maybe cats should just get a different scale of str.

I considered making a character who was accidentally re-incarnated as a cat. Therefore, using non-awakened, 25 point buy, I was wondering if I was "doing it wrong".

Jet the cat (Rog 1)
HP: 6
Str 6 -4
Dex 19 +4
Con 11 +0
Wis 12 +1
Int 10 +0
Cha 8 -1
AC: 16
BAB: +0
Initiative: +4
Attack: claw +6 (1d2-4)
Full attack: 2 claws +6 (1d2-4) and bite +1 (1d3-4)
Skills
Climb +8, jump + 12, move silently +8, listen +4, spot +4, hide +8, tumble +4, balance +12
Saving throws
Ref +6
Fort +0
Will +1
Special abilities: sneak attack/1d6, trapfinding
Feats
Weapon finesse (Racial Bonus) , stealthy
ECL 1

Is this how one would convert a cat into a player character? I thought the only ability score adjustments (Other than int and cha) would be based on size.

Well, if the character is re-incarnated don't the physical stats just change? I think so.
