Centaur PC as mount [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-02-07, 06:12 PM I'm going to be playing a Centaur scout in an upcoming game.

If I want the other party members to be able to ride the centaur how do I make that work? Does he need a special saddle even though he's shaped like a horse? Do the characters need to make any ride checks? Mostly what I'm confused about is this, say the centaur moves, does the rider still get to make a move action?

05-02-07, 06:32 PM If you're willingly letting the others ride you, and you're the one steering yourself, then no, they don't need to make Ride checks and still get their own move action. But if for some reason, they start steering you and trying to pull off complicated maneuvers (beyond, say, drinking a potion), they'll probably need a Ride check.
They'd need to make Ride checks in combat, or risk falling off or losing their attack in the round.
At least, that's what I would say.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, if another Scout was riding you... would he get Skirmish damage also, WITHOUT making his own move action? So you could move, skirmish an opponent, then the other Scout riding you could make a full-attack, with Skirmish damage.

Granted, I have absolutely zero mounted combat experience, so I don't know the rules for that, and I've never actually seen a Scout in play, but I think it would work.

05-02-07, 10:13 PM Skirmish does not work when you are mounted.
Since a centaur is technically its own mount, and you qualify for spirited charge without having to meet the prereqs, this suggests that the centaur is automatically treated as mounted. I am not sure if even he can benefit from skirmish as a scout.:P

Well said! Although s/he might allow an unconcious friend to be placed on his back in dire emergancies, but in general centaurs get very indignant to being treated as pack animals or mounts.

05-03-07, 12:18 AM I actually like the idea of a good-hearted centaur who allows others to ride him. You could roleplay it in a wizened old grandfather way ("Come on, young ones, mount up!"), as a businesslike warrior ("Grab hold. I am far more mobile than you, human."), or as a fearless crusader ("Mount, friend! Onwards to victory!")

.....interpret that last comment as innuendo and you shall be smote. :)
