Interesting title, but I have a few questions about it.

1. Is there any way for a centaur himself to qualify for Cavalier? I am aware of the fact that several of the feats are useless.

2. If, say, the centaur's companion, grew in the same class..and the centaur was willing, could she use him as her effective special mount? (No bad jokes, please.)

3. Assuming that this is legal within the rules, can the elf use Ride to negate a hit on the centaur?

I am aware of the fact that several of the feats are useless. If a centaur obtains a mount, then yes, he can qualify and benefit from the Cavalier PrC. However, a centaur is not his own mount any more than a human is his own mount, so if what you mean was for the centaur to gain benefits as a mount or as though mounted, you're out of luck.

2. If, say, the centaur's companion, grew in the same class..and the centaur was willing, could she use him as her effective special mount? (No bad jokes, please.)*winces* See... this is one of those things that usually DMs just don't let people do because it's just incredibly confusing. I'd really recommend checking with your DM first, because I mean, I know I wouldn't allow it, especially not if both the rider and mount are going to be PCs. That's just asking for a headache... All that being said, I suppose it would be "possible" for a centaur to be a special mount... but I still wouldn't recommend or allow it...

3. Assuming that this is legal within the rules, can the elf use Ride to negate a hit on the centaur?[/FONT]If the centaur is acting as a mount, then sure. If he's acting as a PC... well... again, check that your DM will actually let you do this, because while I don't know of any rules specifically preventing PCs from being mounts, it isn't exactly encouraged because of the confusion...

1. Aside from the tricky mounted combat requirement, he could. Obviously a centaur has significant advantages so you could waive the requirement for centaur cavaliers. First, one isn't going to ride another creature. However, a centaur cavalier probably has unfair advantageous in comparison to other cavaliers. It is always considered with a rider.

2. You have this backwards. Would the centaur allow its companion to ride it? A special mount is a steed and a centaur is a monstrous humanoid regardless of any horse-like features. This depends solely on the relationship between the companion and the centaur.

3. I am not familar with the rules that allow you to use Ride to negate hit on your mount. However, if a rider can do this with a mount then it would be possibly to do this with a centaur. However, since centaurs are less accommodating that mounts, the rider should probably incur some sort of penalty to do this.

Here is my opinion regarding cavalier centaurs. I think they are a great idea but while they could carry a rider, they are considered to be "with rider" already.

The person riding the centaur is at the mercy of the centaur and cannot direct the actions of a centaur. A rider is at a -5 penalty. A rider can't control a centaur with his knees, etc. If a rider annoys the centaur, the centaur can reach around and punch his rider in the face, or simply buck him off. A centaur can probably reach around to unbuckle a saddle if it will even deign to wear one.

How would you feel about carrying a rider? Sure you could carry someone piggyback style but this is how a centaur carrying a rider would feel.

Ultimately, I think the Cavalier PrC could be modified for a centaur cavalier. I think it would be a lot of fun.

Another idea is to kind of reverse the concept - rather than a mount the centaur gets a rider companion that gains abilities as the centaur gains levels - maybe some form of fey or elf.

not by the letter of the rules so to speak. he is, essentially, 1 entity, not the theoretical "knight and his noble steed". the concept is compelling to be sure and others have attempted it. you'd be better at just calling him a heavy lancer and choosing another PrC.

2. If, say, the centaur's companion, grew in the same class..and the centaur was willing, could she use him as her effective special mount? (No bad jokes, please.)
again, i would rule no, that's just me though. "Mount" conjures images and preconceptions of an animal typically, w/ animal Intelligence, not a sentient being that is learned.

3. Assuming that this is legal within the rules, can the elf use Ride to negate a hit on the centaur?
You mean the Mounted Combat clause for hit negation, yes?
um, i'mo not too sure on this matter given that it's for traditional mounts. that is, an animal trained to respond to the rider's careful administrations in combat. ie)you can train a horse in this manner, you can only advise a centaur. does that make sense?
now, as per RAW, i suppose it's applicable, but it has great potential as a means to upset game balance given the immense combat prowess of a centaur coupled w/ a rider.

Aren't centaurs Chaotic? If so all this less likely still.

Chances are they aren't going to want to have their will over their own bodies overridden by the commands of their rider.

Incorrect. A centaur is treated as having the Mounted Combat feat for purposes of prerequisites, as per Races of Faerun and the precedents set forth in the Monster Manual. If a Cavalier requires more than merely the Mounted Combat feat, then a Centaur would need to match those requirements.

But a Centaur, in at least two official WoTC publications, is treated as Mounted.

Oh God not this again...

As per races of Faerun, the Centaur is treated as having the Mounted Combat feat for purposes of meeting the prerequisite for and benefiting from the Spirited Charge feat and NOTHING ELSE.

Furthermore, in the Monster Manuel, they are ONLY treated as being mounted for the purpose of lance damage on a charge.

They are NOT considered mounted for any other purpose, nor should they be.

Where does it say they specifically count as Mounted for one feat - and one feat only?

As far as I can tell, they are treated as having the Mounted Combat feat for all prerequisites.

Just because you wish to houserule otherwise, Crimson, does not make it so.
