Change Race 9th Lvl Wiz/Sor (Transformation)
touch: 1 willing character
Casting time: 1 hr / HD of target
Duration: Permanent
XP cost TBD

One literally changes races, taking on the appearance and many racial traits of the target race.
This spell is permanent and can only be cast on the same character one time. It can not be undone. The following changes take place:

- All ability bonuses of previous race are removed and effected saves and calculations are affected (such as AC/Saving Throws/Bonus Spells). Any change in intelligence as a result of the spell does not affect previously developed skills/languages/literacy, though it does change any future additions for subsequent level advancement. Likewise, human bonus feats & extra skill points only apply to levels when the character is/was human, thus an 8th lvl gnome changing to human, will get an additional skill point per level, but not an additional feat.
- Size of creature changes to target race.
- Land speed changes to target race.
- Racial abilities, such as dark or low-light vision, and any racial immunities are gained/lost.
- Weapon familiarity, languages known, and knowledge based bonuses (like a Dwarf's Craft and Appraise checks) do not change and remain the same as initial race.
- Favored class stays the same as original race
- Blood effects do change to the target race.

I like the spell, having said that, it's way to powerful for only a 9th level spell, I would have to say this is very much an Epic Level Spell.

Agreed, unless the XP cost is through the roof, it's exteremely unblanced. If you want to change race die and get reincarnated a few times.

Epic level spells already cover this, and no precedent for a beneficial and permanent polymorph exists besides rituals from Savage Species.

Which epic level spell already does this?

Not a spell, per se, but the rules definitely exist.

poof, hole party is balor and/or great red wyrm???

XP cost HA. even with 1000 per HD this spell would be overpowered. (--> you yust let an NPC cast it :D and pay the price (5x20x1000 = 100 000 gp ))

IMO: too strong :)

Have to agree with it being to powerful. Especially since their is no consideration for being changed into race with an LA. I start as a Human to get my bonus feat and then change later in the campaign in to an Ogre Magi all for the cost of some gold (I would never cast this on myself, just to avoid the XP penalty).

Also, how does this handle Racial Templates? Could I start as a Human and just later tack on Half-Celestial or Half-Dragon? Or both if I was willing to pay for two separate castings? The templates, mechanically, are valid to stack. Heck, as long as I planned it right this spell could allow a whole lot of template stacking for the expenditure of coins instead of LA.

What if in order to tone it down, the spell costs 2000xp per diffrence in LA. If you go from human to something LA 3. you need to pay 4k xp.

Thats a hefty xp cost, and also limits the spell down some, normal use would be elf to human ect, but if you wanted to go drow you can for some spent xp.

I dont know how to do racial hit die, but my suggestion would be to say they need to spend 1k xp per racial hit die they would gain. Thats half of the LA cost for about half the penalty.
okaynowa

This spell is permanent and can only be cast on the same character one time. It can not be undone. "Permanent" spells can technically be dispelled. Perhaps you want the duration to be "Instant." With instant spells, the moment of transformation is magic, but the consequences are non-magical and can't be so casually reversed.

hefty XP cost? laughable: I think you don't get it: you don't cast the spell yourself, but let one or more NPC's cast it:
human -> half-dragon -> .... -> great wyrm (note the LA of a dragon is quite low (since they have many many HD))
great wyrm: 40 HD, lets say LA +5 that makes 45. 2000 XP at 5 gp per XP makes 10000 gp per level.
---> for a laughable 450 000. a level 20 character becomes a great wyrm with 20 levels.

perhaps if you would lose a level per LA / racial HD it would balance things (this way it doesn't mater if an NPC cast it: you're the one losing the levels)

Most of you seem to have ignored the fact that a 9th level spell capable of performing this action already exists.

It's called "Wish".

that would be the ballanced version. if you trie and unbalance it, the DM can say: "nope".
