| FadeThen03-24-08, 08:28 PM | Hello, all, it's me again. I'm currently playing a Changeling, but I'm not sure about the extent of the shapeshifting powers- what exactly is the cut off point, and what are the exceptions? Any and all explanations would be appreciated, thanks. EDIT: Could I look like a warforged or grow wings? What exactly are the rules here? |
| thefishcometh03-24-08, 09:41 PM | From what I understand, changelings are only capable of cosmetic changes, albeit extensive ones. They cannot gain abilities by changing their shape. For example, if a changeling changed its shape to that of a warforged, he would gain a +10 bonus on disguise checks to appear as said warforged, but he would not become a construct or gain a slam attack. Their change shape ability is just an ability to use disguise self at will, as a full round action. That spell's description should have more details. |
| Lappy900003-24-08, 10:39 PM | Specifically, I believe it's limited to humanoids, within 1 foot of height and 100 pounds of weight. You couldn't be a warforged; they're constructs. I know you could make your fingers look like claws, but you wouldn't be able to use them. Also, your equipment remains unchanged (wear layers). Wanna really mess with people? Take some levels in Druid (Wild Shape, hehe). |
| FadeThen03-25-08, 06:13 PM | Okay, right now we've two conflicting opinions- anyone else have some? |
| Lappy900003-25-08, 06:36 PM | My bad, Disguise Self states that a humanoid caster (i.e. a changeling) could change their apperance to any human-shaped bipedal creature. But they cannot change their body type. So, warforged is probably fine. Wings are probably not. For anything else, just look in the Eberron Campaign Setting and the Player's Handbook (look up Disguise Self in Chapter 11: Spells) EDIT: And all the stuff thefishcometh said is right, too. |

| Napoleon_the_Clown03-26-08, 06:15 AM | The wing thing'd probably depend on the DM. In any event though, it wouldn't give you any sort of flight abilities, even if it logically should. That'd be too powerful for no LA. |
| Kaeam03-26-08, 07:14 AM | What would count as changing your body type? The major changes (tail instead of legs, additional arms etc.) seem quite obvious but what about giving yourself a tail or such? Could a changeling appear as a lizardfolk with tail or would the limit be something without one? How about appearing as certain undead creatures like wights or something that hasn't decomposed too much? Also about scars and changelings: if a changeling gets a scar, could the scar be hidden/removed with the racial ability? I can't really ask my DM as I am the one DMing FadeThen's game. :P |
| teshen03-26-08, 01:20 PM | Disguise Self . . . You make yourself—including clothing, armor, weapons, and equipment—look different. You can seem 1 foot shorter or taller, thin, fat, or in between. You cannot change your body type. Otherwise, the extent of the apparent change is up to you. You could add or obscure a minor feature or look like an entirely different person. The spell does not provide the abilities or mannerisms of the chosen form, nor does it alter the perceived tactile (touch) or audible (sound) properties of you or your equipment. If you use this spell to create a disguise, you get a +10 bonus on the Disguise check. . . . The wing thing'd probably depend on the DM. In any event though, it wouldn't give you any sort of flight abilities, even if it logically should. That'd be too powerful for no LA.The spell tells you what it gets and the racial ability is like the spell except where the racial ability specifically says. So yes, you'd get wings, and no, you could not fly with said wings, because they'd be like organically grown props. What would count as changing your body type? The major changes (tail instead of legs, additional arms etc.) seem quite obvious but what about giving yourself a tail or such? As to the body type question, I suppose it's open to interpretation. I suppose a lot of people treat it as subtype... so if you are a humanoid, you can look like other humanoids within the range dictated by the ability. If you treat body type as bipedal creature, then it changes the possiblities. I'll have to go back and look at the racial ability to make sure... |

I've got a changleing in my group. I just judge by the situation. For example, lizardfolk are humanoids, so I allowed it; he had a tail, but like the wings, he couldn't actually use it. Technically, they were trying to infiltrate a fortress taken over by dragonspawn, and a lizardfolk was the closest thing we could think of. |
