Every race has Creature Features, wich are characteristics that every creature must have, such as size, basic ability modifiers, speed movements, etc, besides a Race has a list of Racial Features wich are specific for every race, so when you pick a race you can choose some Racial Features, most powerful races choose a few of their Racial Features, weaker races choose more of their Racial Features. What are Racial Features? This are examples of Racial Features: Ability Modifiers: An extra +4 to Strength or +2 to Int might be a good racial feature. Resistances: 5 + level Spell Resistance, Fire Resistance 10, Natural Armor +2. Racial Knowledges: Equipment Proficiencies and bonuses against racial enemies, languages, bonus to Int based skills, etc. Racial Traits: Bonuses to Str, Dex, Con, Wis or Cha based skills, Special Attacks, etc. Spell-like Abilities: spell-like or psionic abilities. etc, etc, etc... What's the idea? You can customize your character from level 1, you can be a Dwarf who didn't train on the army so you don't know how to use the Dwarven Axes, you can be a Gnome who never developed spell-like features, you can be an Elf who don't know how to use a Bow... instead you took other things, things related with your character, more customization. On the other hand this give us a way to balance races without using LA, weakly Kobolds might take 6 Racial Features, but mighty Goliaths only take 3. In the advent of 4E this might sound like an idea to work with. What do you think? |
